Just a quick itroduction Ares was a free p2p program.

Just 2 days ago my Ares.exe disappeared. I did not delete. Then i did a scan and found trojans. I deleted those and reinstalled the p2p program.

Today i booted my computer only to find that the program is gone again. This time no virus can be detected.

Anyone knows wtf is going on here? Is this the latest conspiracy from those anti file sharing/anti p2p government bodies? or is it just a punk messig up with my computer using viruses and worms?

The funny thing is that i cannot find anything related to disappearing p2p programs online. Creepy...

It's Anti Virus companies, almost certain. They seem to be blocking out anything that's not made by windows.. I posted a thread about Symantec 'detecting' steam games but I don't think very many people read it.

Try configuring your AV to allow that program, if possible. If not then just disable it when you're using the app.

No, a mistake. And by the way I misread and I thought you said "Ares.exe detected" instead of "Ares.exe deleted".

But that might not be relevant depending on your anti virus and how it's configured.

I think sometimes AV's will delete an app when it's opened or accessed if it's marked as malicious, but it may be from a scan too. Have you done a full system scan lately?

I'm a little biased on this issue, but there's a good reason I don't use an AV that runs constantly and costs money. I just use Ad-Aware for quick scanning and view all my startup configurations with a tool Ray16 posted (autoruns) if I actually think I have something bad on my computer. Some of the "big" anti virus companies make alot of mistakes and excessively mark things as malicious for whatever reason so there's no chance the user gets a virus and complains, even though it may inhibit their computing.

Anyway, what brand is your Anti Virus? And, did you figure out wether or not the AV was the problem, or was it something else?

it couldn't have been the AV. it shows no records of ever having deleted the file.

it is still down to some hidden, undetected worm at work here. i do AV scans every week and i update everyday. i use AVG. downloaded sophos and worked hijack this. i cut off power supply to the internet and successfully uncovered 3 viruses at work. then i thought i ws done.

i boot my computer this morning and the diablo2 was gone. not an issue here since it reminds me to start uninstalling the fucking game already.

but exe files are disappearing every time i boot up. i can't catch any trace of that fucker infecting my computer.

Run a good old fashioned chkdsk.

reinstall your windows before it starts to kill your .txt and .doc files

Don't worry about it, your files are just migrating south for the winter. Files have to do that if you live in a cold place, which you obviously do because of your file migration problem. What you need to do is to set up a big pen with a space heater, and some nice food and water inside your computer for your files. Also, have you taught your files to sit and roll over yet? I was having trouble until I did that.

This is serious here! His megahurtz are at risk!!!

Well if it is a worm then, and your AV isn't picking it up, there's one thing you can try doing.

Download this program Ray16 posted a while called autoruns. (http://www.microsoft.com/technet/sysinternals/Utilities/AutoRuns.mspx)

Now first check task manager for exes, if you find anything suspicious google the exe name and it will tell you wether it's malicious or not.

If you find anything, use the program above to delete it from startup. If it re-adds its self automatically, go to run and type msconfig and enable safe mode. Restart, search for the file, and delete it. (My copy of windows didn't have msconfig so you may need to download (http://www.perfectdrivers.com/local/msconfigxp/msconfig.exe) it and put it in your windows\system32 folder.)

The link to MSConfig above is for 2000-XP, this (http://www.perfectdrivers.com/local/msconfig.exe) is the 98- version.

Below is a list of windows processes so you don't confuse them as malicious. However in the worst case scenario some viruses/trojans can inject themselves into windows processes, and as far as I know that would require backing up files and reinstalling windows..

If any of this doesn't help, ask some other people and research to whatever extent it matters to you. If you still can't figure it out then just backup and reinstall windows, but make sure your backed up files aren't infected too. I've never seen any virus/worm that injects its self into anything other than windows processes, but it's possible.

eh, I know it's a pain but it's worth a try if you don't want to reformat.

Windows Processes (http://www.neuber.com/taskmanager/process/index.html)

[edit] crap he probably reformatted by now..
