I had an old comp which had 16MB, then there was 32MB, then 64, 128, 256, 512, 1024+... So why does RAM always double?

Note also the way in which it is divisble. 2, 4, 8 16, 32, 64, 128, 256, 512, 1024, 2048, 4096, 8192....(I can't wait to have 16 gigs of freaking ram!!)
It has to do with the fact that there are 8 bits in a byte, or something to that effect. not that processors have been 8bit, 16bit, 32bit, 64bit. Note a pattern? Same thing with ram.
Here's an interesting article about RAM (http://computer.howstuffworks.com/ram2.htm)

It doesn't have to double, at least not with SDRAM or DDR ram, I had a computer with ~350mb of ram at one point, just depends on your config.

it's just the base 2 standard. the way memory is stored requires the modules to be in multiples of 8 (bits, that is. in this day and age we work with millions and billions of em :D).

Colorblind: He's talking about the RAM modules, not the amount you can have. I currently have 768mb. On one pc i had 192mb (64+64+32+32).

Well, you guys aren't very stupid. I once had someone say "that's impossible, there's no such thing as a mobo with more than three slots for ram!". :D

Well, I'm about to double my ram :D. From 128 to 256 MB! I'm so happy... Now I can play Warcraft 3 without lagging horribly!

I have 256Megs, and it still swaps like crazy every now and then. It swaps the most in UMS games like matrix defence and other games where it loads a lot of units and structures.
