I've got a crap load of mod com maps and mutators already.
There are some absurdly talented people out there making ut3 maps, some with completely unique textures. People are also remaking old ut/ut04 and even q3 maps that i'm having alot of fun with.

The gears of war style over the shoulder cam is my favorite mutator atm, for some reason i play better with it than first person :p

The game is definitely well on its way to being worth its money.

If anyone wants maps/mods etc the official ut3 forums is the best place to find em: http://forums.epicgames.com/forumdisplay.php?f=335

As for the visual settings, i'm pretty sure i read somewhere someone made a mod to change that, gives more sliders and true/false options etc. hm I should find it

im struggling with the map movement online.. does anybody have any hints? I know your meant to use wall dodges to get around faster but thats all i really get told.

Also is there a way to play online in a 3rd person view? This would make my movement much easier as i usually play 3rd person shooters.

if you are playing the pc version there is a 3rd person view mutator you can use.

as for movement it is severely nerfed from 2k4 and you cant jump around nearly as far as you used to be able to.

it just takes some practice to get used to. there are mutators for this as well.

id rather not search for em all but they should be under here somewhere http://utforums.epicgames.com/forumdisplay.php?f=20

Yeah they definately 'restrained' ut3 compared to 04. But then thats what the low grav, speed increase mods are for ^.^

There are mutators out there to make the game more like 04. I just wish someone would bring back adrenaline, i loved that 'adrenaline full' moment in 04 that allowed a brief speed advantage over everyone and you felt like a god for about 10 seconds lol.

Right now though the only thing i don't like about ut3 is the lack of character avatar options. Epic really need to make an 'armor pack' patch or just release some new chars that don't have all that customizable armor which i'm guessing is what eats up their ability/time to do so.

I should delete ut3, haven't played it in 3 months. And i'm ashamed to admit I recently reinstalled doom3 and since this is the first time I've played it at such a stupidly high res in widescreen with surround sound its actually enjoyable.
Guess the doom4 announcement got me wanting to remember what the previous one was like lol.

Jesus Christ, I don't see how the fuck this sold so poorly. Not to piss on console games, but, man, this is the kind of experience I was really missing with a controller in my hand. So fast paced, good looking, runs well on everything and god damn, it's just fun.

shitty marketing and the worlds worst server browser

Also the Beta wasn't that great so a lot of do,b fucks based their decision to buy or not off of that. The game itself once you get into it kick ass

I really got into the game for awhile, hardcore, still play it a bit. But, I mean, when it comes to what I spend my time with in multiplayer it's just got to be TF2, it's got the community, and just a better overall feel.

However, UT3 is always good for an hour or so every few days.

Allow me to vent just a bit about this game.

The core gameplay of UT3 is solid, most especially in Deathmatch. The game benefitted from the two patches Epic has released, and if anyone bailed on the game before applying these, you may well find that things are quite a bit more enjoyable; that is to say, more familiar.

The user interface has improved with these patches, but is still pure ass. Whoever at Epic designed this originally, and whoever there who still can't manage to fix it's obvious shortcomings, needs to be gassed, dismembered, and then shot. Many in the UT PC-community blame this issue on the fact that it was also a PS3 title. I don't own any consoles, and I'm not sure I understand what problems would arise if a console user were presented with, say, an interface along the lines of the UT2004 example. Is the absence of a mouse THAT much of an issue on a console?

Some of the maps included with the game suffer from the same ailment that took place with UT2003; they're creative, imaginative, and stellar examples of what the engine is capable of. However, they are NOT particularly good places to fight! Remember your first time through Tokara Forest or Plunge in UT2003? Well, a similar experience awaits in more than a few of the UT3 maps, IMO.

>>> Any map in any 1st-person shooter should be, first and foremost, a good location to rumble; everything else is secondary. <<<

I'm not much for these closet-sized 1-on-1 maps that seem to be the rage with the UT2004 crowd, but more than a few of the UT3 maps err too far in the other direction. Note to Epic: Bigger isn't always better.

UT3 shipped with a surprisingly small number of maps, and the normally hyperactive mappers have been slow to fill the void. All the previous UT releases benefitted from a steady stream of new maps from within the community, along with other original content. Not too much out there for UT3 as of yet, considering how long it's been released in comparison to the earlier games. Pay a visit to the UT3 forums and you'll find two schools of thought; those that want a strong link to the previous games, especially the original Unreal Tournament, and those that want to break with the past and need everything to be all shiny, new, and most importantly, different. I connect with the former sentiment, and I'm encouraged that two of the maps Epic has released since the game has launched are remakes of UT99 favorites. Others, however, may be driven to leap out a window for this same reason.

The editor is about as easy as Etruscan trigonometry to use. I taught myself to use the old Visual Basic-based UnrealEd V1.0 editor, the V2.0 jammie, and know enough with V3.0 to be a danger to myself and others. I invested a few hours on the UT3 editor and received just a headache in return. Seems like a pretty steep learning-curve, and I'm guessing that has something to do with the small number of new maps from users.

The UT3 campaign story is disappointing. To anyone who hasn't ventured there, I'm not at all sure I would bother if I were you. The conclusion of this tale is surprisingly dark and edgy, but Epic's attempt to explain things like the phenomena of respawning, and the need to fight over red and blue flags is just plain silly. And, the character of Malcolm, who is portrayed like some geriatric Ving Rhames, complete with a very stereotypical "black" affect, is completely, (and needlessly) trashed.

I get a sense that UT3 has almost become the red-headed stepchild at Epic; now it's "all GOW, all the time", instead. I hope I'm mistaken in that regard, 'cause even after the gripes I've outlined here, I still feel UT3 is a worthwhile use of your cash and time. Epic has always been pretty good at responding to their customer's input. Hopefully, that will turn a decent game into something great.

Wow! So nice to see so many familiar people are still around! Hey Rhenna!
My major gripe with UT3 is the lack of so many wonderful gameplay modes they thought weren't necessary anymore. Assault, bombing run, so many good memories and now boom! Hey you actually dont need them! What?! Why the fuck not?! Sigh.
I agree I miss the UT2k4 hud, mainly because I could fucking scale that monster down! As for "single player"...Im not even going to touch on that with a 10 feet pole.

edit

God I wish that Malcolm WAS Ving Rhames. He is my favourite African American actor! Iceman is epic! XD

RAD! It really is like old times! So good to see you here!

While never much of a BR fan, I certainly would have welcomed it's inclusion. And, I was surprised at the absence of ASSAULT, since at least they could work it into the single-player storyline pretty seamlessly.

Actually, what I'd really love to see return is DOMINATION. Not the Double-D of UT2003 and '04, but the old-skool three control-point DOM of UT '99.

It's the various menu screens I'm disappointed with, not so much the HUD. (Although that graphic they use to represent your character in the lower left corner of the screen looks like something from 1991. I hope the "artist" that created that is manning a deep-fryer at Burger King right now.)

Their reasoning behind not including what seemed to be a standard for UT3 by now fails to convince me. Getting back to the "roots" of the core gameplay that made UT classic great is a moot point.

Downfall

the game just had so much potential and fell so short. I really do believe it was because they tried to make it appeal to the console gamers and forgot there was a PC side.

RAY16

The console versions of UT3 should have been separate from the PC version, like Unreal Championship on the original Xbox was separate from Unreal Tournament.

RAD
June 24th, 2008, 02:21 AM
@Downfall: Thank I really dont understand their reasoning. I mean since it originaly was targeted for PS3 and PC, the blu-ray disc is ginormous, Im sure it would be able to handle all the extra content this game should have had. And I mean Im no developer but bombing run is a console-ish gametype if ever there is one. Oh well, they fucked it up...and now there is a chance (IMHO) that there might not be a UT4...sigh.

One flop in an otherwise long-running and successful franchise won't kill the series off. They'll hopefully learn from their mistakes and make UT4 everything that UT3 should have been.

Digital Limit
June 24th, 2008, 11:39 AM
Wait, they didn't include Bombing Run or Assault?

What is with developers nixing already-implemented content from previous games?

It's like Bad Company only shipping with their new Gold Rush mode, rather than anything from previous iterations (let alone straight deathmatch).

I imagine this is a product of wanting to streamline matchmaking for new users (specifically on consoles). The more players within the same gametype, the easier it is to find a good game with a solid connection and a lot of people. Kind of silly when they could simply opt for Halo's style of merely swapping hoppers when they get empty, but that's time developers probably don't want to spend as it's more or less wasted effort in terms of cash.

June 24th, 2008, 12:03 PM
Assault was combined with Onslaught to make the absolutely horrendous ass "Warfare" mode. Onslaught was why I bought UT2k4, UT3 just feels empty and pooptastic without it.

What are Warfare?

Picture yourself having nuts, which by itself is pretty god damn cool. Then picture your self going to your toolbox and grabbing a hammer, toolboxes and hammers are also really cool.
Then, I want you to picture yourself spreading your sack out on the dining room table and pounding the living shit out of it until it looks like someone stepped on a tomato.

It's an amalgamation of awesome things that turned into a bloody awful mess.

edited because I said "also really cool as well." and contrary to what many may believe I'm not actually retarded.

I got UT3 from GoGamer for $15.90 about a week and a half ago. It's certainly not the best in the series, but the core gameplay is there. It's enjoyable to fire up for a few rounds. There are enough people playing that you can find a server when you want, but overall server ping times leave a bit to be desired. Patches have cleaned up the interface a little, but it's still a hideous and ill-designed abomination.
