It's a MMORPG, a massively multiplayer online role playing game. Basically, you pay money every month, go into this land, and meet other people.

u see, in my experience with MMORPGs, i was compelled to play A LOT, partly because of fun, but also because i wanted to get my money's worth. no sir, i won't be gettin planetside when it's out; my eyes would look shot every morning (actually, afternoon, cause i'd be playin til 7 AM then sleeping til 1PM).

It is really impossible to run a MMORPG without players' monthly payment. They have to make sure the server runs well, no one cheats (they try to prevent as much as they could...), handle people's issues.... It's feel just like a crew of people be the dungeon master but has thousands of people in a game, and runs tons of different maps at the same time.... all these take a lot of money to do, so if a game has no enough people playing, that MMORPG will just have to die...
But, then again, how does Blizzard manage to get their servers run for free...?? Are there really so many people buying brand new copies of their games everyday??? Well, maybe they are losing money, that's why they came up with the idea of World of Warcraft...
Age of Empires II doesn't need to pay, too. But it is Microsoft, you see... they could probably give every Windows user a free copy of that game and still makes money. MS has so much money to burn they still hasn't give up XBox yet, and thank god it is getting better and better on its sale everyday, because a normal console developer would have died long ago...

battle.net isn't a host. it acts as a portal (gateway?) for people to host on their own. when u connect to a game through battle net, you connect to another person's computer, but you're routed through battle.net. call it an index.
so it doesn't really cost all that much to run a giant hub, does it?

Wow future man, what happened to your love affair with HL2?
Yian:the advantage over CS is that on CS it takes approx. one year to list all the servers, whereas with battle.net you click play, and it lets you play in less than 30 seconds. The bad thing about battle.net is that there aren't any cute pictures of penguins next to people who have linux machines.

been there a lot for StarCraft, but I always thought those are games hosting on Blizzard's servers, never knew they were from individual servers out side...
