Hello,
how we all -thought so- know the game business is moving right now. Most companies are console-orient, particularly in Nintendo platforms. The reason for is that the mass market – the part of the market where all ages and genders are convened – is much bigger meanwhile then the part for so-called core gamers: 12-30 years old male. Sadly there is still too less movement in game design. Instead of developing new concepts for the changing audience old brands and franchises are ported. There are almost no independent developers left today and even those few have less possiblities to develope real innovations because of their lack of capital and teammates. The community scene is not going better. To be more interesting modders try to be competitive with industrial standards. But often the standards are too high and the projects fail.
So me and some community people tried to create something. The project called „Defender of Mankind“ originally was a genre-independently experiment connecting most diverse gameplay elements to tell the story of a boy searching for his dad in the year 2020. There should be methods applied borrowed from professional environment. Sadly we rubed the community up the wrong way and all we got was a website, a batch of concepts and a design treatment.
As i am no friend of fails i thought a long time how to save the project from downfall. It should become a commercial mid-budget project developed with 3D Game Studio. But how to get the money? A publisher would ignore the concept, particularly we have no references as a team.
Then i tripped over scrum. Scrum is a model for agile development. It cuts a project into slices and handles the single slices as „mini-projects“ which autonomous teams working on. Then i came up with the idea to combine this effective method with a donation system. Interested players could participate into the game financially, obtained a voice into the project and could reckon up their funding when they buy the finished game. To build trust into the model we could start with a very cheap project slice containing just a few concepts for 100-200 €. The next i thought was we should ask the community first. And now it's time! At DefenderOfMankind.com (http://www.defenderofmankind.com) you can tell us your opinion about the idea. We have written an introduction which is much more particular. But if you already know what you think you can just click the text to the poll . The poll expires in 7 days from now. Your ip adress is saved for the duration of the poll and deleted after. The participation in the poll is non-binding. We are excited for your opinion!

Would you care to show more info? Some screenshots? Do you have a website or a forum where we can look at your progress? You might find it difficult to get any money if you don't have something to show first.

Nice website. The game concept also sounds interesting.
Also I would like to apologize for being such a prick earlier. I didn't even read you post. These forums are probably not the best place to promote an idea like this though.
Steamworks might be an easier way to develop a game such as this. Get into contact with Valve. They are becoming friendlier with the smaller development teams.

Gamer platforms are the BEST place for an idea like this. I don't want to sell this idea to Valve, i want to sell it to the gamers. I wouldn't really feel good with them in my back.

Emmm, doesn't look very impressive right now. There is just a few very generic concept artwroks. No screenshots or 3D models?

No, im sorry. It was very hard to find any people. Thats why we would start with very cheap slices you know?
Btw: There is supposed to be a bonus system. That works like this:
You fund at least one project slice. That costs 1 €. Now you are entitled to woo new investors. Those can be friends, relatives or mates. When a investor wooed by you funds his first slice you get a bonuseuro in your account you can use again to fund a slice. This way you can (theoretically) get the finished game for a single € (!!!) if you can woo enough people.

@Yian: This seriously no scam! I asked Teut, Weidemann, one of the most experienced german professionals (20 years), for his opinion about this business model. He said that it can work, but that it's gonna be hard. Of course it's gonna be hard. I've never said it's gonna be easy.

I'm currently trying Opera again. Some things I like very much, like how fast it is and full-screen mode is really full screen and how videos works, it even has a presentation mode (alternative to powerpoint) and the very fancy ad-block system (right-click and block items). But the spell-check program isn't nearly as good as the one i ff, and it wont open gmail. Tho I am using 9.5beta for which Im testing the new <link> system they have launched( sync bookmarks between your phone and computers). Im not sure what browser I like the best really.

I've never tried Opera myself.
Currently I use Firefox for my porn browsing (because it works and doesn't do virii) and Avant (a shitty shitty shitty shitty IE shell) for my regular browsing but I need to switch because Avant keeps imploding when I do just regular browsing.

I installed Safari today and it is crap. No faster than FF or IE7 and certainly lacking in features/customization. All in all, it really has nothing going for it.

Would you change your opinion if there would be painted "screenshots" which show some sort of gameplay and an interface? So that you get an idea about the game?

dude... If you're for real... and I say IF... then you should first get past this internet n00b phase that you're so obviously struggling with.
Take some time to get to know the industry, the people and the lingo. Play some games, read some books, actualy get into some projects (small is better). Soon you'll understand much more about what gamers (customers) want and you'll realize that if you want an opinion you first need to put something concrete on the table. At least an early build demo or actual in-game shots (even if they're crappy and far from completion). Concept art (they're not called "painted screens") will NEVER do, as any artist can draw some pictures... hell, even I can draw some pictures.
Ideas are a dime a dozen in the gaming industry, but if your idea is worth it get to work on it yourself until you got something that will impress some deep pockets.
FYI - advice is also a dime a dozen on the internet, so do with it what you want.

Exactly! Who needs house music when condo music is so way better. And then there's apartment music which is just so much more portable.
