This week on Random Vocal Nonsense we ramble about various entertainment and gaming news items that have been floating around the intertubes lately. On the entertainment side we share our thoughts Iron Man, The Incredible HULK, The Dark Knight (or as Future Man would say, “The Mother Fucking Dark Knight”), and a few other movies. In addition to that we talk a little about the upcoming third season of the fantastic animated show “The Venture Bros,” which was recently previewed at the New York Comic Con (link in show notes).

On the gaming side of things we talk about “Unreal Tournament 3” coming to the Xbox 360 (without mod support, yay!), EA's survival horror RPG “Dead Space,” “Fallout 3” collector's edition, Interplay's plans to return to the gaming scene, the new Mortal Kombat game, and a handful of other tidbits.

You can download the new episode from our PodBean (http://randomvocalnonsense.podbean.com/) page and links to everything we've talked about in this show can be found in the show notes below. Before you tune in, please note that RVN may contain harsh language.

Thanks for listening!

Lol, really? I'm impressed.

Wait, Vocal nonsense or Verbal nonsense? I prefer the latter.

See, that's how much planning has gone into this.

edit: I'll give you a sloppy handjob if you could fix the thread title for me.

I enjoyed listening to this 'first' episode. It was good radio. I'm not as hardcore of a gamer as you three, but those that are would definitely find it worth listening to. I think you three could even go for the lulz factor and try and throw in some off-topic bullshit. You'd pull it off.

Also, future man's rough, suave voice melts the very fibers of my soul and seems to say "I could love your mother like an animal."

Hahaha, good stuff. I enjoyed the listen (I've only gone through the first one atm). Keep making them and I'll probably keep listening. Where do you guys meet up? An Atrip Ventrillo might be kinda cool, for us to get all together and be....gay.

I'm really glad you guys seemed to enjoy it as much as we enjoyed making it, which was alot. Next week you can really expect something good if you liked that. We're going to be prepared and look for less wandering from the topic, although some of it was enjoyable.

Next week I'm going to have some pretty fucking good electronic music made specifically for the podcast from one of my best buddies, DJ Donkey, so as not have to steal Chiodos, Tenacious D, and Coheed.

Anyway, I'm just really glad to hear some positive feedback for something we had so much fun doing.

I liked it! The audio volumes made it difficult to understand some people though.
e.g. Future man was much louder and clearer than Ray 16 and DarkSwordmaster.

p.s. Stop saying "thats good radio" it's fucking annoying!

just listnening to the begining of it all, sounds pretty good, though interesting how who ever did the cencoring was a bit lax.

Did you guys use like Vent or some shit to do the recordings?

I'll turn my mic volume up higher next time, and talk louder as well.

The censoring is lax because Future was thinking about keeping it clean, but then became too lazy to bleep all the cursing so he said fuck it (and was too lazy to un-bleep what had already been bleeped).

We used Skype to talk, a Skype plugin called Pamela to record (the free "basic" version, which is limited to 15 minutes of record time per session -- that's why the conversation becomes a little disjointed every 15 minutes)) and Future edited it with Audacity.

And for those of you who are curious, this is the Spiderman 3 clip that Dark Swordmaster and I were talking about: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oOLvi6I6AUQ

As for some impressions, I'm only 15-minutes in but I do have some constructive comments:

& As someone said, the less you make fun of your show, the better. "That's good radio." hurts my body.

& In terms of background noise, I think having the keyboard sounds is cool and adds some panache to the show (despite them being unintentional). The mic volume was mostly decent, but I had the volume up pretty high so it wouldn't be a problem I'd encounter (edit: Alright, I lied. Swordmaster is especially too quiet).

& And lastly, I have to go against whoever said to have more off topic stuff - it's nice spice, but more often than not I'd prefer gaming chatter. Then again, is this podcast at all affiliated with Atrip, even in the loosest sense? Could morph the show into an Atrip podcast, even, and cover forum discussions and shitty drama.

Anywho, /thoughts

And I'd like to comment that the less off-topic the better for me. I wanna hear about games!

Also, I like the keyboard sounds in the background. Gives the show some panache.

I suppose we could, but then we'd have to find something else after 30 days.

We plan on diverging less from the news item at hand in our first non-test episode. I imagine there will still be some off-topic banter, but we will definitely try to be more on-topic than we were in this pilot.

I listen to the x3f podcast regularly and they usually open with a "What are you playing?" section.

Might not be a bad idea to mooch off their format in that respect.

Could even be an opportunity to plug your website of free games in the shownotes, Ray. You know, assuming you play them, heh.

Edit: Wait, Pamela is only $25. That's about $8 per person. C'mon guys, whip out those wallets.

RAY16

We may not open with a "What are you playing?" segment, but we'll probably have one in there. It'll probably take us a couple of shows to get a format we're comfortable with down. Being a collaborative effort, we'll have to discuss our options as we go and decide on something.

Speaking of show notes, I wrote some up a few minutes ago. I'll hand 'em to Future when he gets on so he can update the PodBean page with them.

Starcraft has a Tower Defense thing? Or was that Warcraft? I love Tower Defense.

Oh, cool, you're guys that like Saints Row. Too many podcasts have Saints Row haters on 'em. :)

Edit: Who else is being exposed to this podcast, anyway?

RAY16
April 19th, 2008, 02:17 PM
I'm inclined to say that Starcraft started Tower/Cannon/Whatever Defense. It was the first game I ever played to have that kind of map, and if it didn't start the game type then it certainly popularized it. I used to play UMS games in Starcraft religiously back in the day but after a year or two of addiction I eventually grew tired of the retards that play on Battle.net and was forced to quit (that and after such a long time the game just started to lose its appeal).

Digital Limit

Ah, good to know. Maybe I'll go reinstall Starcraft and fuck with that.

As for more show impressions, I'd say it's important that Futureman doesn't introduce everyone, but rather they they introduce themselves. Same with signing off. I had a little trouble during the podcast telling Ray and Swordmaster apart, something that'd be less of a problem if I can attune my voice-recognition to their subtleties early on. Just a little qualm.

Also, the show needs more (Halo / Smash Bros. / Rock Band)-related talk, because that's what I play. :D

"Make me a podcast, underlings!"

I don't hate consoles, I just don't really care for them. I wouldn't mind owning a 360 or Wii, but when it comes down to it I'd rather spend the next chunk of cash I get on computer upgrades. As for Halo... I'm not a Halo hater, but I'm not a fan either. However, I could say a few things about how much I hate Bungie's disgustingly dated enemy wave game pacing system.

It's far better than COD's even-more-dated infinite enemy respawn system. Talk about fucking shit right there.

Although, those might not be related as I'm not sure what you mean. Just kicking into fanboy-mode.

Ultimately, I think the pacing in the Halo games is phenomenal, and that the checkpoint-based infinite respawns from COD are retarded.

But yeah, might you elaborate? What would be an alternative?

First off, Ray and swordmaster - talk more and fix mic volume.

Second, have a pre fabbed list of content to keep the show moving.

Otherwise, link me to the rest as it was awesome. Was thoroughly entertained the duration of the time. Good chemistry. "That's good radio."

I must admit, I only listened to the first 3 minutes (I usually cannot listen attentively to something for more than a couple of minutes before I get the craving to do something else to keep me busy - and then I start losing track of what is said), but you guys did a good job and I'm impressed (and that says a lot, since I'm not generous when it comes to compliments). With some polish and lots of determination you could really make this a big success, and I wish you all the best.

1. If I could give some advice regarding the dead space - use some background music - you can keep it toned down while chatting, and just play with the volume during breaks.
2. Also, the length - it might be a better idea to keep the episodes a little shorter (that's just my personal opinion and it depends on the audience you're trying to reach)
3. You should also cover the subjects in a little more detail (this might not be your intention, but would be a nice touch) - some of your topics are not well known, and some kind of short introduction (or something) would be quite helpful for those interested.
4. If you could also post some short summary of the topics that are discussed in the episode you will also be able to gather more interest, as people will know what to expect.
5. To add to DL's suggestion - maybe at some point you could actually get some famous people to join your coversation and it could be some kind of informal interview.

Digital Limit
April 20th, 2008, 01:51 PM
I agree with all of Farsimon's points (outside of length, of course). Surprising.

That said, in terms of background music, I recommend you really play with that closely as bad background music (especially stuff with a vocal track, for instance) can detract far more than add.

Basically, be careful. I've dropped podcasts because they've attempted to do that and failed. It's really not necessary as long as sound quality is good.

farsimon
April 20th, 2008, 01:59 PM
True, background music can be teh suck if done wrong. Maybe at some point you could hire someone with some audio editing skillz to help with that.

But yeah, might you elaborate? What would be an alternative?

I don't really have an alternative to suggest, they just need to do something else...or at the very least make it less obvious that you're just waiting for the last wave before you can progress. I find myself counting the waves, waiting for "checkpoint" to appear in the upper left-hand corner of the screen so I can move forward. It just feels restrictive and artificial.

It was entertaining, but 30mins is enough.

You should try to up the sound quality a bit and get rid if the dead space where you dont talk. Pr fabbed list with more on it is a good idea.
And make is dowloadable so I can listen to new eps outside this summer.

Most Podcasts I've seen are at least an hour, with a lot of them averaging 2 hours. 45 Minutes isn't very long

As for the dead space issue, I imagine there will be far less dead space once we get more comfortable with Podcasting in general.

3. You should also cover the subjects in a little more detail (this might not be your intention, but would be a nice touch) - some of your topics are not well known, and some kind of short introduction (or something) would be quite helpful for those interested.

3. We plan to be more on-topic and detailed about the news items in the future. Again, this was a rather haphazard test episode.

4. Good idea.

5. That would be nice, but lets not get ahead of ourselves... Heh.

Hey, links to the stuff you talk about in the podcast on the blog page would be nice.

The wave-based gameplay you're talking about is few and far between, if there at all. I can't think of a time I have experienced what you're saying, honestly.

That said, I know most (if not all) of the enemies are pre-placed, and are static with that respect.

Have you played through Halo 3? Maybe it was moreso in the earlier games or something.

RAY16
April 20th, 2008, 06:55 PM
My experience is based on Halo 1 and part of Halo 2. I don't own a 360 so I obviously can't play Halo 3. In the first game and what I've played of the second, the gameplay mechanic I'm referring to is very much there, although admittedly it's not used in every enemy encounter. But yes, CoD's infinitely respawning enemies are far worse, and that's why I've hated the series since the release of CoD 2. At least Halo's enemy supply is finite.

I cringe a bit when RAY says "faggot" and mispronounces "emo", Swordmaster seems a bit on the quiet side (both in level and frequency), and I think you guys could do better at acknowledging your audience's lack of sight (see: Google Images search), but other than that it was good times.

As for reactions to content, I guess it shouldn't surprise me much that you guys aren't huge on split screen, but for me that's a huge part of my online experience. I have always have my roommates filtering through our living room, and being able to have them just jump into matches with me and light up some guy across the 'tubes is great. I love Halo 3 for this very reason relative to games that get it wrong, e.g. COD4.

Also, competitive gaming is really fun to watch when you're really into a game, I think (such as how I'm into Halo, obviously). You naysayers, have you watched much in that way? I think watching announcers babble on about tactics while the best people in some of my favorite games duke it out is nothing but exciting, especially-so given I never get a similar sports-fix due to my no-so-affinity to physical entertainment. It's cool, because I can notice their strategies and improve my play, as well as just enjoy the crazy-comebacks and rooting for whichever team I decide to align myself with.

But yeah, this brings me back to podcast quality: I think the podcast could do well to focus on less parallel conversations, and more on converging ones. Two of the more exciting parts of the podcast (for me, anyway) were the times when I was about to hear one of you explain one of your more radical views, only to have one of you say, "Oh wait, let's stay on topic." Fuck that! I wanna know why RAY thinks Halo's singleplayer is absolute shit or why he (or was it Swordmaster?) hated the original Hulk movie. Don't go dodging those juicy bits in order to stick to a script. Those are the best parts.

Lastly, the Half-Life mod of the week was kind of lost on me. All that I got out of it was that there was some Western-style mod that was decent, and that I should try it out. Give me some details or anecdotes! Overall, you guys need to be more specific, I think. Another instance is probably with respect to your Iron Man "discussion" as it was mostly "Yeah, it's cool, and most superhero movies suck. Robert Downey Jr. is in it." which is really nothing at all, at least in terms of information most everyone listening already has.

Maybe it's a confusion of purpose, but I'm listening to hear you guys ramble on about yours thoughts on shit far more than I am to hear bullet-points in news that I've probably already been exposed to. The Venture Bros. conversation was a highlight as it was news I hadn't heard, I love the show, and because you guys talked about a specific thing that was great about it. Might not have been a bad idea for each of you to mention your favorite episodes of the past, or at least do more shit like that.

But yeah, I enjoyed it despite some bumpy stuff.

Quick recap: Swordmaster needs to be loud and proud, RAY needs to watch his words, and overall more specifics outside of "Looks cool. That sucks. I liked it. Etc."

And whoa, I wrote words.

I'll try not to insult you and your fellow homosexuals in the future (even though that's not the context that its meant in). And yeah, I messed up my pronunciation of "emo" by saying it as "ehmo". My pronunciation in general was pretty shitty last night.

As for the lack of sight thing... I think we acknowledge it fine by providing links to everything we refer to. Do you honestly want us to describe in detail when we find a horrible picture on GIS? Should we describe Tubgirl or Goatse if we run into them? We could have describe the leaked WoW shots in more detail, but I figure people would rather just click the damn link and seem them with their own eyes instead of listening to me go into detail on it so they can form a mental picture.

As for reactions to content, I guess it shouldn't surprise me much that you guys aren't huge on split screen, but for me that's a huge part of my online experience. I love Halo 3 for this very reason relative to games that get it wrong, e.g. COD4.

I'm not against it, it's a useful tool for playing with people on one TV. I've just gotten so used to having my picture fill up a whole screen because I haven't played anything with split screen for so long. My opinion is a tad biased towards what is normal for me.

I very much enjoy playing Quake 3 and Unreal Tournament 2004, but I still don't find watching other people play it fun. This really comes down to the individual, so you can't say competitive gaming is really fun to watch. It's fun to watch for some people, not everybody. I've never been big on spectator sports of any kind, so it's only natural that I don't care for watching people play games. I don't care about teams or rising stars in sports, it's just not something that interests me.

If I do ever watch competitive gamers play I just skim through the good stuff to get a few tips on how to improve my game, but I don't give two shits about who wins or loses.

I was trying to keep people on-topic because I thought I remembered that a few people mentioned we were veering off-topic too much (as in starting with a news item about Halo and ending up talking about Tacos or something)...*sigh*, I guess you can't please everybody. We'll obviously have to find a balance, something that will probably take a few more episodes.

We probably should have gone into more detail on the mod, I'll give you that. I honestly didn't play it long enough to go into it much more than I did though.

I'd say our movie section was lacking, but most of the movies we picked didn't really have much information available that wasn't already pretty well known. You're right about it being more of a "yeah, that looks cool" fest than anything else, but is that really unexpected considering we haven't seen any of these movies? I mean, you can't offer a detailed opinion or explanation of things if you have nothing to base your thoughts on.

Other than that, I also didn't want to drag a topic on for too long as that could quickly bring the running time up and an hour is about all we can fit into an MP3 at 64Kbps and still be under the 30MB per audio file limit that PodBean imposes on free accounts. If we go over an hour because we get into long discussions we'd have to split it into two parts, which makes it a pain in the ass to listen to.

Noted.

Quick recap: Swordmaster needs to be loud and proud, RAY needs to watch his words, and overall more specifics outside of "Looks cool. That sucks. I liked it. Etc."

Again, I'll try to bring down my cursing. At the very least, I'll stop offending you and your fellow homosexuals by calling people faggots or saying gay in a derogatory fashion, even though I say them as general curses rather than trying to insinuate that somebody is indeed a homosexual.

I'm aware of the context-makes-it-safe logic, but it's moreso that the word is just so degenerate. Be a classy podcast and take the high road.

And to clarify, it's not that I am offended, heh. Not gay, just think it makes you sound like an ignorant infant straight out of the dregs of Xbox Live.

[ EDIT ]

And I'm aware I can just look it up (I did, afterall) but I often listen to podcasts in class, in my car, when working out, etc. It makes sense to assume the listener won't be looking anything up mid-podcast.

[ ANOTHER EDIT ]

As for the movies you haven't seen, I guess I was thinking specifically of impressions straight out of the trailers. I was surprised no one mentioned Iron Man's ridiculous metal suit he constructs to escape the base, or how badass he is when he's evading jets or using his weird explosive thing to topple a tank. Or just how Downey Jr. seemed to fit the role well. But yeah, specifics.

Throw child rape in there again and I can't listen from the school computer lab. Especially saying to do it, that caused a little trouble.

Edit: Not a problem with faggots, though, I guess thats not covered... or isn't as distinctive. Feel free to ignore DL and stay interesting, though.

Oh, and a note about this show: no preparation went into this one at all, so we just randomly picked topics as we recorded. I think we managed to get some quality content in there, though. Particularly near the middle of the recording.

Episode 2

On this episode of RVN we talk about GTAIV and the Jack Thompson shenanigans surrounding it, the Team Fortress 2 update that Valve finally got around to releasing, a little rambling about some of the games we’re playing and a few other random tidbits. This episode had absolutely no planning put into it due to general laziness. You may notice that we have two separate conversations about TF2 in this show, which is the end result of technical difficulties that caused us to re-record some things and lazy editing that left some redundant content in. As usual, please note that RVN may contain harsh language so it’s not recommended that you listen to it at work or school unless you have headphones on.

Thanks for listening and feel free to leave us comments here on PodBean, at the atrip.net forums or email Future Man at johnathon (.) brittain (at) gmail (.) com

Heh, yeah, I'm a big podcast listener and I'll usually sit through the 2+ hour 1UP Yours casts, most gaming podcasts seem to go for about an hour and a half each. I even kind of cut this one short because I needed to go get something with nicotene in it before I just started calling DSM and RAY faggots.

Thanks for listening though, I'm going to count the nerds comment as a positive, considering subject matter.

Random Vocal Nonsense #004
January 2nd, 2009

The first show of the new year is here!

Unlike the last episode there isn’t a central game that takes up most of the talk because RAY16 is a lazy bastard. As a result of his laziness we’ve opted to have short talks about games we’ve been playing bits and pieces of over the holidays rather than get into a meaty discussion on anything specific.

But fear not, Ray has promised to actually have something to talk about in the next show (Bioshock in particular)! If he doesn’t then he has agreed to be publicly stoned, tarred and feathered by angry gnomes.

Thanks for listening!
