After browsing through the forums for a bit, I have discovered a common cause and effect going on. The cause would be posts like mine asking the identity of a particular naked lady and the effect would be the guy who first responded. Fair enough I suppose. I guess there is a point where you have say that the question gets tiring after awhile, but seriously, it's just a question. Why do you feel the need to respond instead of just not answering it. What if someone else wants to know the same thing but is afraid of breaking your tree house secret handshake rule? Forum "regulars" are definitely interesting.

What about a thread where people can post the identity of the BOTD. You could even make a contest out of it. First one for that day wins. Would sure cut down on the taboo question. Would start it myself, but as you can see, I don't know their names.

Well, I actually got around to following the link to the object of perineum's interest. I am totally unqualified, (and a bit uncomfortable), in "scoring" another women's Babeolicious Quotient, but I gather that this particular girl's current score of 6.9 is hovering only slightly above "bargain-bin" status, to use a video-game metaphor.

Now, that number probably isn't justified on an absolute basis. Glamour photography isn't at all my line, but I would submit that the photographer and makeup staff, (if any), dropped the ball. Her hair needs serious work, there is way too much eye makeup, and those shoes need to be tossed into a blast furnace. That isn't a good pose for her, either. I'm guessing several dozen photographs were taken during this session, and, in fairness to the model, if this represents the best of the lot, the photographer needs to stick to doing weddings and such.

I would like to echo the sentiments of my esteemed colleague future man in restating that most, if not all, of the posts on this forum are the product of general apathy, married to a slavish form of habitual activity. The difference between providing a constructive post and a destructive post is so slight to be almost non-existant, especially when you don't possess the answer that an individual is requesting. Assuming that all costs are the same, a rational forum poster would evaluate the possible benefits of a constructive versus destructive post.

In short, the benefits of a constructive post are negligible; the vast majority of individuals depart with narry a "thanks". Though I happen to be of the mind, along with a few other individuals that frequent this demesne, that constructive posts may lead to more regular members and thus more vitality within the forums, it is difficult to argue with the historical facts.

On the other hand, destructive posts offer the opportunity for a holier-than-thou rant, which always provides, at the very least, some small amount of entertainment. Those guests that attempt to challenge the status quo in such a manner inevitably continue the trend. I sometimes think that those that are offended (perhaps justifiably so) by these posts might have represented possible new members. However, the general opinion of the members here, for good or otherwise, is that those that can't take the initial onslaught of destructive commentary are not "strong" enough to stick around as real members.

And yet I believe it was Yian, as positive a forum member as ever there was, who posited that the Atrip forums are a nice change of pace from most other forums. Our initiation is rude, vile and possibly uncalled for, but it ensures that this doesn't become 4chan (not that I really think we're at risk of that). I give as an example AussieAlexis, who posted something like 200 posts in three days. It was annoying and not at all in keeping with the 'traditions' of the forum. So we basically flamed her out.

Are we fools and idiots? At times, yes, but it's a specific kind of idiocy. There is a consistency that strings through most of the membership, and it means that threads, stagnant and limited though they may be, don't become an idiotic breeding ground for the worst internet behaviour.

I'm not gone, I remember to check back every couple days. Yian, it has nothing to do with anger, naked ladies, or high horses. It has everything to with the forum being public. Like I said, I know the original post was about 12 year old mentality and contrary to popular belief had nothing to do with masturbation. They are completely anti-social behavior in what is supposed to be a social scene. Some are odd and make me wonder why someone would even bother to post it. I know you have your familiar groups and clicks just like any social environment but what I find interesting is that people actually take the time to post inane negativity as if anyone cares, what drives that. I don't want to sound pendantic (heaven forbid) but here we go.

Most of your argument seems to be focused around the idea that the forum is a respectable medium of interaction that needs to be taken seriously, as much as, or as close as to make no difference, regular interaction. That is the only interpretation that would justify your premise that those that are socially inept in real life life exhibit those same characteristics online.

I find this premise to be unsatisfying in that it is not a clear cause-and-effect relationship. You are taking a fact (rude behavior on the forums) and extrapolating that data backwards to derive a cause. Now, I don't doubt that many of your situations involving overt hostility or ignorance on the internet are, in fact, caused by those reasons that you mention. What I do contest is the notion that ALL such cases have a common cause.

Now, I don't presume to speak for everyone here, but I would guess that most established members here do not take this forum THAT seriously as a form of social medium. The trick for new members is to understand that we treat this form of social interaction much more flippantly than we would more traditional forms of discourse. I most seriously doubt that the members here have anything against you, and we take steps to remove individuals that are just mindlessly incoherent and filled with vitriol (jerramaya being a notable exception). I, for one, find this forum refreshing because it provides entertainment (I should also thank you for that as well, I suppose) and doesn't become an online pissing competition because the members just don't care enough or have thick enough skin to not see a reason to escalate.

perineum, I respect your enthusiasm, and I do think you have more than a few valid points, especially when it comes to the etiquette of a public forum. As you have no doubt witnessed, this place is messy and chaotic and downright impolite in more than a few occasions. Usually when a constructive criticism is made here, others will follow with not-very-helpful statements and 90% of the forum becomes random rant of one form or another.

But here is something else I would like you to consider. This place has been around for a while now, and the members of this forum have been here together for a long time. They are able to stick around and gradually develop a culture that, while inaccessible to outsiders, they are able to enjoy. You, on the other hand, come in as an outsider and have no proper knowledge of this forum's culture (which is evident, because if you do, you would not start a thread asking who a BotD is.)

In anthropology, when the researchers conduct ethnographic research, a main method used is called participant-observation - that is, to gather information from a ascent, decent, or assigned identity group by becoming part of the group. Of course, the anthropologist cannot become a member easily, because many of these groups form their culture and perform their rites of initiation only when trust is established, and quite often it takes years to build. But here is something to remember when it comes to establishing the needed rapport to proceed in a foreign culture without offending its inhabitants: always use an emic perspective, never an etic perspective.

So far, you are judging the members of Actiontrip forum with your perspective, an outsider's perspective. While the old wisdom suggests that you, the outsider, has a more clear view of the overall situation, your act of asking for information from the community has constituted an intent to, at least temporarily, become part of this place. Therefore, continuing using an outsider's perspective and your insistence of its legitimacy has been very detrimental to your rapport-establishing process. It doesn't matter how strange or immature you consider this part of the web is - if you wished to avoid conflicts, you needed to play bay their rules.

As the result, you were violently rejected from a culture you do not fully understand, and instead of trying to understand why this culture has rejected you, you attempted to defend yourself by assuming a superior position. So far, your remarks have been closely related to your intellectual superiority. But once again, like the nipple statement from the very beginning, how could I take someone seriously when this person pretty much says that "I am better. I am smarter. I am social. I got it right. You don't." Such arrogance only served to undermine your attempted display of a rational, level-headed individual who is capable of reasoning and understanding.

Overall, you simply made a wrong turn. Two proper things you could have done was 1) understand why the forum members insulted you and try to make amends, or 2) walk away before any more insults would be traded and do damage to both parties. But you did not walk away, and you continue to refuse to acknowledge the difference between your preconceived notion of proper behavior (though I am kind of, sort of with you on that one) and continue to clash with a culture you do not, and refuse, to understand.

So, I hope this has given you a different view. It is now up to you what happens next. So far you have gotten everyone's attention now. Are you going to create more pain, or are you going to stick around and see if things will work out?

First I would like to thank Lehesu and Fortune Hunter for those well put responses and in response to Fortune Hunter I would like to say that I would agree with you on most everything you said except for where you contested me about putting everyone under the same umbrella more or less. I know that my generalizations are grossly exaggerated and I should have been more clear as to whom I was referring. Mostly to the users who were the cause of the crazy debate in the initial few posts. I also don't take the forum "that" serious and didn't expect any of the regulars to either, hence the original post of mine. I seriously wish I could change the topic to something, anything, other than nipples right about now. You also say that the forum is a more flippant source of social interaction. I would maybe disagree with that also. I get what your saying, I think, if your saying that the way a person expresses themselves here isn't an accurate portrait of their real life persona. I would be more inclined to believe that the anonymity would allow that person to be more true to self without the fear of repercussion that would normally come with a live situation.
