Everyone here has probably seen the screenshots of Homeworld2. As a diehard fan of the original Homeworld, I'm very disappointed. Such a shame that they did little on improving the graphics.
I was so excted to hear the news that the game is coming out this year, and remember that thread I started for Homeworld2? I was really looking forward to see what they have for us this time. Now I would rather wiat for a few more fucking years so they can get the things right.
Both Homeworld and Half-Life came out at 1999, and they all received many positive reviews. Now we all know that Half-Life is gonna rock our ass straight out of solar system, while Homeworld2 did virtually nothing to the original except adding some more polygons to the ship models, make a new interface, and some wacky damage effects.
We all know that homeworld's ship textures don't look too great, and I can't believe that after all these years the textures look exactly the same as they were in the first game; blurry, inconsistency at angles, and doesn't give any feeling of materials... just some color palatte.
Then the damage effect is improverd a bit... but still look likt shit to me. I was so shocked when I saw one of the video on which a capital ship was fucked by some corvettes. It has a big fireball, and it simnply disappeared.... oh come on!!! How about at least lots of debris flying around before it disappears!?
And those ship plates flying aroung when the ship is hit look all the same... all the debris has exactly the same size and exactly the same shape... they pops up from the part of the ship where it is hit while that part look still undamaged.... OMG if FPS can make bullets leave marks on the wall, what is so hard for them to atlease add some damaged texture on a fucking ship!? Some game has go as far as destructable geometry, and Homeworld2 doesn't even let ships look damaged when they were hit???
Now let's talk about the gamplay... First of all, they take away the formation feature, which means all my little strike crafts from now on are all gonna fly in the stupis delta formation. WTF!! The reason they kill it is because it "has no real effect on the gameplay..." WTF!!!! Don't they know how cool it is to just watch fighters fly in claw formations? How can I possibly do "evil scouts" trick if my scouts can even get into wall formation??
Then they make the strike craft's fuel consumption, because it is "frustrating...", which means from now on, the game is about mothership vs mothership, no more other complicated stuff. Why don't they just give us too fleets right from the start of the game, and two players throw all the shit they got on each other... I bet it's gonna be "frustration-free."
Again, the textures. Look like shit. The ship model has more polygons but can't see any advanced texturing or shader being used. People would say 'gameplay is more important than graphics..." well in that case everyone goes back to Starcraft, or play a console game. PC games has the obligation to look good. A game that could be good-looking but is not-good-looking is a fucking slacker, especially for a sequel of a successful title.
Now, the worst part.... the fucking voice-acting... I hope they will fix it before they ship the game. Sounds not just cheesy, but amatuerish. Not even 1% as good as the original. The music in the trailer sounds like a clone form Empire Earth, and it sucks.
Speaking of shipping, the box-art. My Fucking that is one hell of a ugly game box-art design. Well, the first one never look too good, either, so it should be okay then.
All these problems and they game is going to hit retail very very soon. I hope the people at Relic realize how dumb Homeworld2 looks right now, announce a couple of delays, tweak the shit out of the graphics and voice-over, and present a game all Homeworld fan would like to see.
