View Full Version : A lot of spam bots activities

Recently there has been a ton of spam bot activities. I think the bots are getting either smarter or getting more aggressive. Either way, I am curious about our security measure. Is there some kind of filter, or does the forum currently rely on the mods manually monitoring the threads?
If it leans more to the latter, I think the mods can't be around 24/7 and the bots will sip through somehow. Is it possible for a tighter security measure?

I quite agree. I posted a comment in the "Nominations" forum awhile back with a completely serious recommendation that perhaps empowering a few more long-term members, who might be a bit more pro-active in the area of spam/bot/troll suppression, with limited moderator rights might not be a bad move. This suggestion resulted in the entire "Nominations" forum being purged, which, of course, solved everything. I apparently pushed someone's buttons...
I note that, currently in the "Nominations" forum, the bots/trolls have taken to responding to each other. Marvelous. Being that this site is pretty much on life-support, perhaps the feeling is it'll take whatever traffic it can get. Believe me, I get the fact that our moderators have, (hopefully), an existence beyond atrip.net, and do what they can, when they can. But, perhaps it might be time to pass the proverbial baton, if RealLifeŽ precludes taking care of business.
I won't pretend to know if the vBulletin software permits it, but I've seen forums where all the newbies posts are reviewed for content before being displayed, sometimes being delayed by 36 hours or so. Is that feasible with this software package? Perhaps one more "lite" moderator, in an appropriate time zone, whose task is to solely target the bots and sub-humans would do the trick?

I would imagine it's partially due to the ancient version of vBulletin this forum is on.

The bots add character.

In that case, a man who walks around and rapes every baby he sees has character.

We're just lulling them into a false sense of security...

What can we do about this? Will e-mailing Vader help?

Probably not.
Sorry, I've been out of the country for the past few weeks and didn't have any consistent internet access. I'm catching up on everything now.

That's great, but don't we have about three other mods? Where the fuck are they at?

That's more or less accurate. DL hasn't been here in almost a month, and who knows about Smap.

If that is the case, I think that it might be more practical to have someone who is here often to be a mod. This will certainly help the spam issue.

Gah. Keeping 2lions on facebook long enough to have half a conversation is next to impossible.
