I want to get this one:
http://www.googlegear.com/jsp/ProductDetail.jsp?ProductCode=331607
But i'm a impatient bastard and don't feel like wating 3 days for it to get here. So i'm gonna try to go to one of my local stores (bestbuy, circuit city, a local store called SWS) and see if they have this one or different good one. What brands do you recommend?

Lite-On's a pretty good company, i'd have to say that Plextor makes the best.

I guess i'll look at the TDK and plextor burners when i go to the store, if i don't like them then i'll just order the one i mentioned above. Any more recommendations?

I've got two Lite-On drives, and love 'em. But, I don't think you'll find them at most retail stores. The Plextor's are the high-end drives in the industry. Have a 4 year-old SCSI model, and never had a single problem. And, the TDK Velo-CDs are pretty good, too!

best by far is liteon. they're as good as plextor for half the price (wait, no, a third). btw, cendynes are re badged liteons, and easily sell for 20$ after rebates.

They didn't have any good CD-RW drives at Bestbuy or Circuit City, they were all slow and i'm not sure if the brands were any good. So i ordered the Liteon drive, i know its going to be great because my CD-ROM drive is made by liteon and it has lasted me 3 and a half years of heavy use, though it is starting to act up. I should be getting the drive by Wednesday. w00t!

Lite-on, all the way. Cheap as heck, silent, and fast as all get-out!

The thing with Plextor is that they can copy any CD EVEN WITH BURN GAURDS!!!! It's pretty amazing and very useful. The only downside is that they cost A LOT.

lite-on can do that. plextor is extremely high quality, no doubt, but lite-on's are just as good for half the price (otherwise, they'd be dead even). have u guys seen the new "gigarec" plextor drives? can burn 980 megs or so onto a normal 700mb cdr (and 1.2gigs onto a special 880mb cdr). check it out:

I've run Plextor and Lite-On, and they're both pretty good. So, I guess it comes down to price. Or availability.
And it takes my CDs like three or four minutes to be done, so that's lots of fun. Better than the 2x I was running until I upgraded.:)

i love that feeling when you've stay out of the loop for a while, and then suddenly purchase a bad ass piece of hardware.

We got that same drive and it's kind of loud. It makes that swishing noise when the CD spins. However, you get use to it and after a while it's not a bid deal.
By the way I think this is my first post in this forum. So I would just like to say hey. HEY!

Yeah, its a little loud, but i don't really care. I have a black case with a white Burner and Floppy drive, i don't care about how it looks either. Its all about how it performs.

The 4Gig HD is from my first computer, which was horrible. I got it about 4 years ago, in fact, i've only been using this current computer for about 4-5 months.
-old specs-
Celeron 400Mhz (Overclocked to 500Mhz)
320Megs PC-100 SDRAM
4Gig HD (it was very hard playing games with such a small HD, could only have one or two installed at a time)
Asus mobo (forgot model number, had a SiS 620 chipset in it)
48x CD-ROM
GeForce 2 MX 32Meg PCI
Forgot the rest...

*** OFF-TOPIC ***
Mammoth system upgrade, RAY. I think I could whip up something in my kitchen with more memory bandwidth than the SiS620. They (SiS) have since gotten it (somewhat) together. Even the 630 was an improvement.

Don't sweat the specs and such on the burner. If it's workin' good and you're happy with it, what else matters?

Some good companies are
HP , PLexter, LG, Aopen , LITE ON, and Samsung :D
some of them are new in CD-RW but they are performing very well
