I was using McAfee Virus Scan 7.0, but the damn thing was making my computer run slow and when ever I was online the message internet explorer has encountered a problem and needs to shut down would pop up like every 5-10 minutes. Thanks to the advice of our esteemed RADiator I uninstalled it. Haven't had a bitof problem since. Soon as I can, I'm getting Norton and trying it out.

Norton's Antivirus. Get it and forget about getting any viruses. Just put on automatic update and forget you even have it.

All anti viruses are very foolish not onece have i found a virus on my computer. BTW I did find an "ERROR" on the C:/ drive through "windows scan disk"

You might not find this in Xp since Xp is made with the general idea to work against the user.

I think every anti virus is fine until it fucking detects a virus and gets updating regularly

I can't believe people are still being misled by media and gossip so easily these days... XP is by far the best windows and it is indeed a lot better than 98 or ME, and it is quite powerful on speed and features, too. People still have that general idea that Bill Gates is bad, Microsoft is bad, and Windows is bad...

I bet when they say 98 was bad (Which is very true), most people just listen to that and noding their head like followers so they can show the rest that they know some shit about computer, too...

Let me get this straight, if all you do is go to the START button/Programs/AOL Instant Messanger/Click... or double click on that IE icon of yours on the desktop, what is so bad about your OS on that part? Stop saying XP is bad because some n00bs who can't even upgran some freaking RAMS say so and follow their saying...

(No offense, ihateyou, it's just the fact that some people running aroung pretending they know shit and misled people like you really make me sick...)

BTW, an interesting comic for everyone:

Yeah, I'd have to back up Yian on that one. I've been running XP for almost a year and it's been better than anything else I've had. 3.1, 3.11, 95, 98, Me, 2k... oh, and Commodore DOS. God bless Commodore. Anyway, it hasn't yet blue-screened and keeps everything happy. So no, I don't think XP is all that bad.

I happen to think XP is the best. I just don't understand why McAfee was messing my computer up (see post above)

Windows' lack of decent programming, leading to exploitable problems, can suck me. Linux itself is well-coded enough to almost be considered an Anti-Virus :) But, in reality, when I'm using Windoze I use Norton.

Townie Killer made a good point. Sometime the virus is there but due to the absense of any kind of virus-detection measure, you might never know it.

Anti-Virus program slow down things a lot, though. Any suggestions on how to keep the computer safe while maintaint he performance at the same time?

I use the very reliable and very free anti-vir (http://www.free-av.com/). A lot less popular than Norton, but also a lot less bulky.

Symantec Norton Antivirus 2003 here! And I am more than satisfied with my little baby! keeps me safe, allthough I'm VERY cautious with what I download so he doesn't have to do much!

Yeah, McAfee Keeps showing a splash screen everytime windows start and I hate it. Duh! Its like Im proud having it on my machine. So I got Norton.. Hey Yian turn the automatic update feature off, just update it every month and you'll be fine. Right click on it (system tray) and click Disable Autoprotect if you need all resources when starting a game.

Yean, I did, but the settings that really slowing down my machine is the Auto-Protect. My IE now takes 15 seconds to start. I now disable it, then start the IE, then enable it.

i use Norton and it rocks...no issues with scanning leaks, hassle free updates and if u do it regularly chances of u cathcing a virus from the net are almost nil...besides i use Zone Alarm Pro along with Norton as I have DSL ...and zone alarm is so fuckin strict that it blocks anything n everything and all your ports are safe from potential malicious intrusions...

get it ....highly recommended and ull findout for yrself how often yr comp is attacked by hackers looking out for open ports on yr comp for stealing data... and if u think it causes any spyware then u think wrong cos after installing zone alarm run either Ad-Aware 6.0 or Spybot-S&D 1.2 to see the results for yrself...

Just read every post before yours. They all offer suggestions. Personally I use Mcafee mainly because I have never had an issue with it.
