What games are you guys playing at the moment? I'm so pissed off with the game companies, all the current games that are out are shit, I'm so fucking bored.

I really hope Halflife 2 and Deus Ex2 kick ass or else I dont know what the fuck I'm going to do. I'll probably sell my P.C. and take up a sport or something.

I wish South Africa had cheaper internet options, so I could play online games. I played DAoC for 6 months when I was in the UK and it fucking rocked. It was so addictive I lost so much weight cause I didn't want to eat, I wanted to PLAY!!!!! :)

"Might reinstall SoF2"
Are you on drugs man.. SOF2 multiplayer should never be uninstalled from any computer, the game has so much atmosphere.

Ok online i'm playing SOF2, GhostRecon and sometimes Starcraft, go figure I like shooters I was in the military, can't shoot peeps on the street until I go crazy so I might as well frag them online.

Generals, Homeworld modded, Starcraft, Vice city and Emperor Dune are what keeps me entertained when i'm not up in some ass.. FPS for online and RTS for the single playing ai battles... Vice city is only in there because I can't go around running into people on the streets, until I go crazy that is.

To many games to tell them all, I really just play anything that has a good replay value.

What is your gaming budget? A friend got ADSL using Telkom ISP. I'll tell you, playing locally hosted games is great - If you are into counter strike, which is pretty much the only locally played/hosted game. Accessing international game servers is dog-ass slow. Maybe changing ISP's to Tascalli or Mweb would work - but they charge an arm and a leg. Then there is the 3GB Cap and the cost: around R1k.

Then there is ISDN - I recently got 128K ISDN installed. I use Discovery Health's ISP (IS) and I'll tell you, international bandwidth rocks! I use the R7 option, which means during the week between 7pm and 7am I pay R14 to stay connected (R7x2) and from Friday 7pm to Monday 7am for another R14 (provided there are no disconnections).

ISDN cost breakdown:
Telkom ISDN Rental: R171.00
Infinate call (R7): R 50.72
Discovery 128K ISP: R145.00 (telkom charge R105 for 64k)
-----------
R366.72
-----------

Then add the amount of times you dial. Going on every afternoon can get REAL expensive, but if you settle for weekends you'll be looking at around another R50 - R100. So for under R500 per month you can have fast internet access. My 5 cents.

MrBored
June 4th, 2003, 03:18 AM
I dont have the budget for ADSL unfortunately, I'm gonna start studying next year (working atm) and I will have to cut back on certain luxuries cause my salary will vanish. You got a link to those Discovery people's website, I wanna look them up.

Hitman, have you tried playing Operation Flashpoint, if you're into military games you have to try it out. The graphics engine is a bit dated, but its damn good regardless. With the Resistance expansion they tried to improve the looks, the terrain and water is much better. Plus there are loads of mods that just rock.

I didn't like Dune to much, but EA have really got the whole 3D RTS right with Generals imho. We've had some great LAN games, except it requires quite a large machine and the game generally lags cause people have uber shit computers :/

Discovery, as in Discovery Health. You have to be a Discovery Health Vitality member.

I agree on Flash Point (OPF) - it is one bitchin game. I bought the 3-in-1 pack with resistence and the coldwar expansion. Nice campaign and multiplay. Vehicles are operable (including attack helicopters, recon planes etc.) When OPF2 hits the shelves, I'm buying. Apparantley also a Vietnam 1st person simulator (NOT just an FPS!!)

Actually, the first cure of boredom is ignorance. Just living out a completely mundane existance until you die. I dont see being born stupid as a curse, its a blessing.

Damn I wish Bloodmoon would hurry up and be released (plus I hope it doesn't suck). Morrowind kept me busy for ages, there was so much shit to do, it completely rocked.

MrBored
June 4th, 2003, 07:19 AM
The problem I had with Baldurs gate was there was to much fucking reading. I really dont like having to read all the time. Morrowind's reading didn't piss me off as much, maybe it was just the dialogue system was more to my liking.

So unskinnybob, do you have ISDN, or do you just know of people that do. Also, have you ever played Ultima Online on Zuluhotel, which is now The Forgotten Realms?

I have ISDN, 128K. Never played Ultima Online. As I mentioned in Monday's "Morning" section I played Diablo2 online most of the weekend. I use the West American Server. Speed is good (No noticeable lag). I'd like to try more online games now, but I only connect over weekends.

Wouldn't it be awesome if blizzard would just release Diablo 3? Unannounced, just all of a sudden.

But then they wouldn't be able to hype up bad games! And where on earth would we be without that? :)

But, I think the Halflife 2 model is a good one. Come out with news of the game's existence what, four months before release, and just go from there. I can wait four months. Four years, that's a little worse.

Hey MrBored what games do you have access to?? If you can get "Enter The Matrix" can you get about any game that people in the states can get?? thats what i'm wondering. But a few recommendations are: MOHAA, CS (helps to have online play), GTA3, GTA3: VC, WarCraft 3, Neverwinter Nights, Morrowind. And if you don't wanna play games mabey buy a model or something, thats what I did :) Tamiya makes nice models and that take up a lot of time to make.

MrBored
June 4th, 2003, 02:11 PM
didn't like MOHAA, to much like duck hunt imho. I prefer realistic FPS, like the Rainbow 6 series and Operation Flashpoint. I'm playing Raven Shield atm, and its by far the best in the series, but without online play its a bit annoying playing the same people at lans. I reckon I might just fucking get ADSL and screw the expense.

Hitman
June 4th, 2003, 04:24 PM
Realistic.. play Ghost Recon, that's prob the only game I consider hard in my FPS lineup, especially the Island Thunder expansion.

WhoGivesARatsAss
June 4th, 2003, 10:16 PM
i hate realistic games.. if i want realistic.. i would get a gun and blow everyones balls off.. i hated operation flashpoint.. coz it made no sense.. i couldnt distinguish my men from the enemy's and kept on fucking my own men and mission over.. u killed ur own pal.. how could u? and such crap came to the screen.. also ghost recon sucks ass.. no weapon models.. when was the last time i held a gun in my hand and couldnt see the damn thing.. raven shield on the other hand is cool and i like that game.. the only rainbow game that i liked ever.. or tom clancy game for that matter and splinter cell ofcourse.. even that shit wasnt realistic.. u shoot lights in front of a camera and it doesnt detect that.. wtf?.. u want realism get an AK and hit the streets dude.. i play games for fun.. and the most fun i have ever gotten outta games are the ones with nice twisting story lines.. such as mgs 2, longest journey, grim fandango and such.. now those were the games u can play all the time just to listen to the awesome storyline.. also arcade games are cool.. like HULK.. now thats a game i have been playing yesterday and day before.. and it rocks..

for u bored.. i would recommend games that have involving storylines.. much deeper than the surface.. i think that might just suit u.. as for u calling mohaa a duck hunt.. well i can very well imagine that u mustve hated games like doom 1 & 2, wolf3d, rtcw, duke nukem, hexen, heretic, descent 1,2,3 etc etc.. and now serious sam!?!? if u didnt play these games and ofcourse the quake series.. u have played nothing..

as for u calling mohaa a duck hunt..

First part:
Yeah! That's right Grim Fandango is a great game.

Second part:
That damn sniper level in MOHAA didn't need to be there. Otherwise, it was a pretty good game.

sniper level was actually a change of pace rather than a duck hunt.. it added more sense of urgency and to be on ur toes when u cant see shit.. i actually loved that level just because of this.. coz u had to be careful at every step and spot snipers in places where u would least expect.. consider urslf in such an environment i dont think u would be running around carelessly.. also there were plenty of run and gun levels in the game already!

JerraMaya

I actually really liked all those games, Quake 1 is number 1 on my list of best games ever. The thing that pissed me off with MOHAA was that it was so insanely scripted, it tried to be realistic when it clearly wasn't and it did a shit job of trying to give you the feel and atmosphere of world war 2 ( if that was even their intention... ). I know alot of people didn't like Flashpoint for pretty much the same reasons you dont, and thats fine. I just have a thing for realistic military games. The problem I had with Ghost Recon was the AI was so gay and it was very buggy ( I didn't bother to wait for patches cause I lost interest and played flashpoint instead ). I had this one save point where if you loaded it and followed a particular bot he would shoot straight through a giant hill and kill someone on the other side. It happened every time you loaded that save without fail, it was hysterical. Doom 2 was the first game that I played multiplayer, it was fucking sweet. I played Quake 1 and Doom2 throughout my high school life ( even when Quake 2 and 3 came out ), they are pure classics.

Grim Fandango was sweet, its a pitty that the "quest" genre has gone out the window, and I blame it all on consoles.

I just thought the sniper level was tedious. It wasn't like sniper duels, it was here's a bunch of snipers. And it's raining. And they can see through all that, and trees too.

It just felt like punishment, instead of a fun, tense sniper duel.

But, if you switch "sniper duel" with "beach landing," I felt the same way about the Omaha beach level, so who knows?

its ppl like u who give the simple fps genre a bad name by supporting a fucking game that has enemies like ur own fucking men.. i wonder if that actually happens in real life.. lol.. think of fighting a war like that..

p.s. i can never get over the fact that i shot my co team member 5 times thinking that he was on the other fucking side!

MrBored
June 6th, 2003, 04:06 AM
hehe, dude, it happens all the time in real war. The World Wars had loads of that type of shit, Vietnam probably had more, but nowadays its not people shooting other people, its people dropping bombs on the wrong people ;P I'm sure you've heard the term "friendly fire".

Once you have played all the way through the single player you wont have that problem in multiplayer anymore. There are slight differences in the uniforms that become obvious when you know what to look for. The main difference being the helmets. In real life everyone tries to wear the best camo and because of that everyone looks the same, you cant have people wearing red on the one team and people wearing blue on the other. They tried that in the old days. If you've seen Patriot (with Mel Gibson ) you'll see the lines of british troops that wore bright red clothing and that just stood there and got shot. It was nice and easy to see who the enemy was, but you died real quick.

EDIT:
Also, dont get me wrong. I love "simple" first person shooters, games like Quake rock, I have problems when people try to say that those games are more strategic than they really are. Quake, UT and games like that are basically shoot-em-ups and are perfect like that.

WhoGivesARatsAss
June 6th, 2003, 04:11 AM
dude i agree on all ur points except that i cant stand realism in fucking video games.. is vice city real.. hell no but it sure provides with a lot of fun.. is hulk real.. no.. was grim fandango real.. no.. is sonic real.. i mean u look from the dawn of gaming.. games were developed to get away with everyday realities etc.. how the fuck did they begin to start incorporating all this shit in games.. i mean look at bf1942.. its a hell lot more fun than flashpoint.. coz the damn thing has an arcade feel to it!

E-TIT FOR TIT!

i agree those are simplistic shooters and a hell lot of fun! there is nothing strategic abt them.. the only people who think they are strategic is coz they have to devise a simple fucking strategy that 2 men on the offense and 2 on the defense.. now thats what i call a strategic ball game!.. bah!

MrBored
June 6th, 2003, 04:16 AM
Each to his own I guess. My opinion is that as soon as a game implements realistic LOOKING guns and vehicles and claims it to be realistic I get pissed off. If BF1942 had made up weapons, possibly sci-fi (although it would have been like tribes) I wouldn't have come down on it so hard.

WhoGivesARatsAss
June 6th, 2003, 04:18 AM

I think it is unfair to compare Flashpoint to FPS games. Flashpoint was more like a "Soldier Simulator". The differences are immediatley evident - different style of aiming (which was BRIL), different style of manuvering, although Ghost Recon, BHD and Ravenshield all have leopard crawl, the idea of going prone or lying down actually impacts on accuracy was just kewl (which, YES, the Clancy games have incorporated very nicely).

OPF had nothing on BF as far as Multiplayer fun goes. In OPF you stay dead after you've been killed... no ticket timer, no respawn... It's the realism that made the game.

My 5 cents.

MrBored
June 6th, 2003, 05:00 AM
make a file called description.ext and place it in the mission directory before you save it to multiplayer. in this file add the line

respawn="group";

You then respawn into the still living AI members of the group. Its great for those long co-op missions at a lan when you dont want to sit around for 3 hours because you accidently ejected from a helicopter right in the begining ;p

Then when you run out of AI you become the birdie!!!! and the fun really starts!!!

I'll see your 5 cents and raise you 2.
