Hey... just curious - I'm not a hardware expert, and just wante d to check something with you guys.
There's this buzzing noise that just started in the last couple of days from my Harddrive [listened without the case]. Its a medium-high pitched noise that is quite loud [like a fly]... Any advice or suggestions to deal with this?

could be something messed up with the heads. does it sound metallic? wouldn't want anything rubbing against another thing at 7200 rpm.....

It could be your controller, do you defrag alot/often?

Not too often... takes a while. :(

Most of the hard-drive buzzing/knocking noises have come from a problem with the heads. But, on the other hand, it wouldn't hurt to defrag and see if that changes anything. It'll clean things up, if nothing else.

Am I going to start losing sectors?

Might be wise to start backing up your data ASAP.

Also if you format alot heads fuck up... and I heard defragin helps some to prevent that...

Nope, if the heads/controller are fucking then that's it, it'll just die one day, you better start backing up the critical files... and saving up for a new hdd.

no, heads these days are very good. very often they can realign themselves, and the automatic parking can put it back where it belongs. but, like i said; at 7200 rpm, ya never know :)

Not to harp on this, but as somebody who just lost a lot of data--back up your important files. Even if nothing ends up being wrong, you still have them backed up. And, if you burn them onto CD, they're easy to store.

Do you have one of those S.M.A.R.T HDD's? because they usually give a warning before something shitty is going to happen. O and I had this problem too once and all it turned out be is that the screws which held the thing in my case got a little loose and allowed the HDD to vibrate (mmmm viiiibraaaaate) against the inner side of my case...so might wanna check that!

I defrag my both drives every week and turn the computer off when I go to bed, so to make my hard drives smooth and fast. Well, it is always good to back up everything with CDs, though. Don't have to spent time on getting them all back if you have to format.

The SMART system is crap. This is from experience. The only warning my SMART system gave me was five minutes. Not even enough time to save anything. If you have it, maybe it'll work, but don't count on it. It's crappy.

lol, my experience was the exact opposite. a year and a half of SMART warnings(went from bad to worse to critical to oh shit) and the drive never skipped a beat. it's runnin in my workhorse folder right now.

Hmm. Mine started up with a SMART warning and was dead in five minutes. Maybe you're just luckier.:)

something could have moves (somehow) and the HD might be vibrating something a little to make that buzz, I dunno.

I'm surprised that noone has mentioned the possibility that there might be several wasps flying around in his HDD. Or perhaps a bumble bee.
That's why I have a spider that lives in my pc. His name is webby.
