which game do you all reckon has the best soundtrack ever??
in my mind it would have to be the Total Annihaliation one.
i just found the game in one of my draws, and decided to try it out in XP, and to my suprise it is still a heaps good game, even to todays standard. i mean the AI of the planes is awesome, no game today beats it, and then i heard the soundtrack...brilliant!!
wat do u think???

MGS's main theme is very nicely done.

Homeworld's music was stolen from Samuel Barber's "Adajio for Strings" and you heard that thing in the movie Platoon, too. So that isn't really Homeworld's soundtrack. Homeworld also has a song at the end dredit from Yes, and the est of the music is done by Studio X. A lot of people thought all the music in Homeworld is done by Yes, which is not true. Yes only made the song at the very end, and it wasn't exclusively for Homeworld. It was in their album "The Ladders".

Dink Smallwood has nice musics, too, but then again they stole it from some great composers and converted them into midi. People who don't know classical music too much actually thought the developed made the original music. I thought the same, too, untill I went Boscov and heard that music playing. I was like "OMG they play Dink Smallwood's music!!!"

Ya Dark Reign 1 also had some good tunes.

Here it goes:

WarCraft 3 and StarCraft has some good ones...
Red Alert had some bombing tunes (the great march)
Diablo 2 has some good orhestra

But the best music is in Baldur's Gate II, if you like that kinda music that is...

Ok, juss try to keep up with me here cause i'm gonna throw in songs from all over the place and no i don't know specifics but if u really need to know, check out the games for yourself.
The techno tracks from wipeout 1, dunno if you know what that is, one of the 1st games for ps. 1 track from need for speed porsche unleashed, a few tracks from ut2003. my favorite tune comes from the old dreamcast game space channel 5. actually, the song is only heard at the end credits. it's an upbeat fast song, with no words, just some funky instruments and a girl humming to the beat. unfortunately i can't find that song anywhere, which makes me love it even more.

now for the best songs not found only in games... or maybe we'll save that for another post.

yes, the radio stations were stupid, but that's why they were funny. this is radio made to enhance a game's experience and it doesn't have to be the best. think of it as a bonus. i had low expectations and the radio stations didn't turn out to be that bad. they were cheesy, but they made me laugh and that's good enough.

Quake: Trent Reznor. The DoomIII teaser trailers also kick-ass. I've heard rumors.

I can't say what THE best game soundtrack is because i havn't played every game ever made. Out of all the games i've played i'd have to say Dues Ex has one of the best soundtracks. For consoles i'd have to say the donkey kong series, they have all had great music.

Total Annihilation was a superb game in every aspect. Still probably the best RTS I've played. And, great music. Jeremy Soule is pretty good. Mafia has good music, except the driving music gets a little old. Homeworld also had outstanding music. Morrowind, too. Those four are some of the best I can think of.

Final Fantasy VII (yes, it is also for PC).

However, the PC version just uses crap midi files for the soundtrack, which is HORRID. Like I've said before, it is much nicer emulated.

I really like the music for Vietcong.
And agree with MGS 1 & 2.
Really enjoyed the Silent Hill main song.
But I keep humming the Jet Set Radio Future (Xbox) tunes...

So I will leave all those.

Actually to choose the best game music is quite difficult, very different styles and technics I have the feeling I left lots and lots more.

And like someone wrote, there is no way we could played every game released...

i rekons the music in the intro to quake 2 was wckd, and the rest of the games music wasnt bad either... after that i would have to say UT2003 had some pretty sweet tunes.

TA soundtrack was really amazing, i havent heard a game where the soundtrack fit so well. Plus, it changed accordingly to the action.

Red Alert 2 also had some nice heavy industrial songs. Warcraft III was ok but Warcraft II really owned (not the midi music, the real cd music). Diablo II ofcourse has really good moody music, especially in LOD where it was made by an orchestra.

Best has to be Quake 1. Trent Reznor (NIN), nuff said. I'm also looking forward to Doom III just for his sound and music although I read on some sites that Reznor left due to the lack of time for working on Doom III. I'm pretty sure its rumors, but it could also be true since he's working on a new album (yah) and now Doom III has been pushed back until next year since they probably have to redo the entire sound engine. I might be completely wrong and Reznor could still be working on the sound, and I still fuckin' hope he is, but it could also be true.:(

Another good soundtrack has to be the one in Half-Life. The CD music didnt play often, but when the electronic industrial-ish music kicked in during that first battle against the marines... too good. I miss my HL days, can't wait t'ill the 2nd one.

I don't really like games where they just throw in songs from music albums and such. To me, it just shows the lack of originality and how lazy game companies can be, but sometimes it can work well such as in GTA:VC

The RA 2 stuff was alright, but the TA soundtrack was powerful. It flowed from one theme into another. I still think it was probably the best one I've seen. Or, perhaps, heard.

I really don't remember the Quake music being all that interesting. It was just kinda there. Same goes for Half-Life. I remember, of course, the nods to NIN in the game, which I was fairly ambivalent about, but I don't actually remember the music. I guess it just didn't strike me.
