View Full Version : Our PC Game depression...

Dear fellas...
We have been in a pc game drought for about 5 years.
When everything was hot and going well... meaning capabilities of current graphics cards were stretched to the limits by current games; tweaking ur card meant faster frames to make the game playable and more realistic.
But look where we are now...
Half-life 2 is delayed 6 years later from the origional, and doom3 wont be released till Q1 of 2004! These are the games that started it all! and they are coming back finally. I unfortunately dont feel any hype toward these new games, they are simply continuing with the origionals, the gameplay will be pretty much the same, and graphics will be better than 5 years ago.
What I think my friends, is that it is the fault of the graphics card companies. Technologies in the most recently released cards by Nvidia and ATI are barely used. Im not surprised games use directx9 tho, because this is a microsoft technology and helps with the basics of processing textures, color and the alike; it has little to do with the core of the graphics card technologies.
Look at ATI and Nvidia right now over at Megagames (http://www.megagames.com/news/html/hardware/nvidiafightsbackwithnv38.shtml)
Now isnt it funny? they are battling over what...the crown!
but what technologies were used from their R300 and NV30 chips in current games? BARELY ANY! Now what everyone needs to understand is that of course these two need to compete for the crown...whoever has it is gonna be bought, therefore make money and so on BECAUSE THEY ARE COMPANIES!
What I am getting to here is that these companies released technology that hasnt even been used yet, er rather, still being produced in current games! Dont you see how the gfx card companies are screwing the game producers...the technologies wont become standardised which is extra hard to work with when producing a game and leads to major incompatibilites and of course bugs. The thing about consoles is that they are standardised hardware, which makes it easier to produce a game because a game producer can take full advantage of the current technology within the console, but with current graphics cards it is very hard to take advantage of the newer technologies while still making it playable for people with older PCs, and therfore loosing market share (and what I mean is sales) therfore lessening the sales for the game makers!
Now, guys I am not an expert, so some of what I have said may have been a bit misinterpreted, but from my knowledge of how everything is going on with our PC game Depression, it is true!

well, im not really bothered by that... as long as i still get some of the games i have my eye on.... im satisfied... and i think alot of the games in the past 5 years were great and then some bad... and HL2 will be a hell of alot better gameplay than the first! how can you say it looks the same??? DOOM 3 i can understand...but how could you not get hyped up about HL2??? im sorry my friend but if HL2 didnt do it for you nothing will.....if i were you i would give up on the PC.....

dont get me wrong, I am hyped about HL2 and I will have alot of fun playing it im sure, it looks like a truely awesome game, I cant say much about d3 cuz there isnt any factual information nor videos of it besides the little that id. has released....its just the inevitable after that HL2 release, mods after mods, Doom3 release and then the slow decay of the single player gaming of it, then to cs2 or something untill another 5 years down the road, valve and id. release new games.

I agree with you IkYiolul. I don't get as hyped up about games like I used to. People are always saying to me "There's this new game coming out called blah, blah, blah". A year ago, I'd be like "OMG, mad! Can't wait till that comes out!" But now, I'm usually like "Oh yeah... cool, whatever." I remember when I first got Doom II. I was rapped (Because I loved the 1st Doom). But I remember a while ago, someone told me about this new game called 'Devastation', and how it was a FPS and that it was based in the present time. So I went out and got it. I brought it home, played it, and for all the hype that I had heard about the game, it was shit. All these new games that come out are all (in some way) the same. Hopefully HL2 changes the revolution. We'll have to see...

i don't know if i agree with all the graphics card mumbo-jumbo you were saying. i think it is the developers fault. a lot of games are getting churned out that just try to copy popular games or copy certain aspects of popular games and have nothing new or innovative to offer. these games usually end up lacking severely in one or two areas (e.g. storyline, multiplayer, replay value, etc.).
i suppose the problem is that it takes years and years to make a new and innovative game (i.e. doom 3 and hl2). most companies aren't willing to do this or they can't do this because they aren't big enough to afford that much time and resources to a game so they end up working really hard on one part that they think will be a good selling point and kind of skimp on the rest.

What about Morrowind? Mafia?
Single-player gaming never went away. You just have been looking in the wrong place. It doesn't take two game companies--one of which hasn't made much else than Quake and Doom (I know, invented the genre, but since then?) and the other, the probable industry leader despite releasing only one game.
And then there is Stalker, and Far Cry, too. There is a whole group of games designed to blow your mind, graphics-wise.
A few years ago, it was Aquanox and.. um. Ballistic, I think. Some racing game.
The really well-known companies only release every few years. Of course. Everyone does that. It's about quality. The thing is, all those companies out there overlap. Morrowind comes out last summer, HL2 comes out this September (or whatever) and so on.
As long as people upgrade, people will make bleeding-edge games. Just don't always look for them from the biggest names.

A different note--of course you don't get as hyped about games as you did when you were a kid. You're growing up. That happens. Let's put this into context. Even the biggest porn stars were, at some point, excited about getting to second base.
Maybe if, instead of only buying or hyping big stuff from big companies, you looked around and saw the big stuff from little companies. Or even medium companies?
And for god's sake, graphics do not equal gameplay. GTA3 looks terrible, but it's still loads of fun to play, yes?

i'm going to agree with this...
about the little or medium companies...look at pteradon...little company, but i still think vietcong is one of the best games ever released.
but i also have to agree with the fact that we are in some sort of depression....:(
i truly pray that HL2 will be as revolutionary and mind changing (those are the same arent they?) as the first one

i played the demo, i almost cracked up laughing...i thought it was good for a bit of a laugh...maybe thats wat the developers had in mind, not to satisfy customers with an exceptional gameplay experience, but to provide humor...lol

I am not the type of person to just buy from the big companies, in fact I never bought my favorite game, Quake 3. The only game I remember buying that I was really hyped for was the full Duke Nukem pack (all the expansions etc.) for 70 bux. Of course that was a long time ago...
I love the different aspects of GTA3, morrowind, and mafia.
although I hardly play any of them, they are great games. I've played very inexpensive games also (the ones in the under $9 baragain bin) like Dusk till Dawn, submarine titans, Giants Citizen Kabuto.
Those are all awesome games, each of them have their own little problems but so do many of the good games.
So dont get me wrong, I pay attention to everything that comes out, and play just about everything. The reason Im not as hyped is because I am older yes, but its also because my favorite companies havnt released their new games yet (its been 5 years at least).

I think there has been more shitty games than there used to be. After all, when I was younger lots of things were new, as opposed to the constant rehashes we see today, you can't play anything without saying "man, they ripped that from Quake 2" or somthing similar to that.
Yian
August 3rd, 2003, 06:07 PM
When the games just started to develop only a few people play them, thus the fan base is very important for this game developers, and they try to bring the best thing to the fan to keep the fans intact. Then the industry gets big, huge companies came into the play, and they started to use the cheapest way, the lowest quality, and the highest price possible, to just make money. Gone are the game developers that care about the game they make, gone are the game makers who actually make games "they will want to play," but just some fat CEOs laying a plan and a loq budget and say "so? it's just a game!" That's why we have all these shit games.
But what keeps these shit games alive are the shit fans. People who play gameslike, well, Enter the Matrix, and love it, are another reason why shit games just keep poping out, because people buy them!
But we should not be discouraged by the shit games becaue shit games are not real games. We have regular mail and junk mail, but people will probably never catagoraize junk mail as any kind of real thing in the mailing system, although it ius a big part and it's down right annoying. Just think that the good games are the "real games", while the shit games are just like junk mails.

its just like the music industry...think about it, u hear all these "new" pop songs, that all the 13 year old girls think are fuckin mad, even though they are just rehashes....i guess we're at the stage were developers have run out of ideas, or creativity.
but think about it....if u were a developer, what kind of story line would u make up? it can be any type of game (RTS, RPG, FPS, Strategy etc). or as a gamer what kind of story line would u like to see??

Secret Weapons of WWII
Lock on Modern Air Combat
Secret Weapons Over Normandy
Soldner
Halo
...I'm not psyched at all for half life 2. I tried to play the original 3 times. 3 Times I turned it off and uninstalled it after the first explosion...I thought it sucked...though people tell me it gets better after about the 3rd level..I couldn't stand it. I'm not into that Sci-Fi shit...only when it comes to fps though. Give me some real guns, on a real planet called Earth, fighting humans...I'm happy. Give me shitty guns, fighting white fuzzy spider looking monsters...my ass. Halo = the only exception...I think. Seemd to be good from what I played on Xbox..so I might give it a chance.
Right now I'm happy with Starcraft, ET, BF1942, and CS.
The sad part is I have a 9800pro, and havent been able to see some "Real graphics" ...yet

Morrowind and Operation Flashpoint are the only games that have been released in probably the last 3 years that I can load up and play right now and have fun, oh and Need for Speed HP2 and thats only cause I loooovvveee racing games. And I dont think its because I'm getting old either. My friend has a younger brother and all they play at lans is about 1 game of WC3 and 1 game of CS then they all get bored and watch movies. In the old days we would play games till I eyes were red and we couldn't stay awake any longer. All the games today are sequels or expansions, none of the big game companies have any balls to release brand new games mostly cause they are greedy fuckers.
I agree with the topic and think this is the first Great PC Game Depression. I think it truely started around the begining of 2001 although there were hints of it starting in 2000.

dude 2000, 2001 and even 2002 brought us great games no doubt.. the depression only started in 2003 with crappy movie tie-ins, crappy expansion packs, unreal 2, and stupid ass people who give industry the money.. you never learn until u get stabbed or something.. and the industry needed this.. see for urslf july and august now have to be the worst months of gaming since i know games.. i havent had a single decent game.. i consider FROZEN THRONE and NWN SoU to be part of june if i am not mistaken and those are the games that i am still playing.. we havent had a shooter in ages..
2003 sucked in terms of gaming thus far unless someone saves this year (hl2, far cry, tron 2) etc we are fucked for good..
hey bored u tried rallisport and/or cmr3 those are good racing games but if rally isnt ur style of play stay away

Yeah, rally is not really my style, I feel claustrophobic on those tracks and I dont like the driving style ( i.e. having to power slide a lot of the time ). Plus I prefer exotic production cars :)
What games came out in 2000-2002 that you would consider really good besides the ones I mentioned? There was about 6 months of Gaming depression before Operation Flashpoint came out, and because nothing after Flashpoint ( Multiplayer wise ) was any good I consider it one long depression.

2004 is gunna be bitchin'.
In reply to some of you that couldn't get into Half-Life, that's understandable. I'm finding it difficult to play back through it again, because the graphics seem to keep getting worse and worse. But when I first fired it up back in 98, it was THE SHIT. No other game like it. Some of you younger guys and gals spoiled by the more eye pleasing graphics of today's games are going to have a hard time playing through Half-Life with an open mind. Just realize Half-Life gave birth to wanna-be's. Wanna-be's only exist, because there was Half-Life. It did for FPS's, what Gran Turismo (PS2) did for racing games. A huge step forward.
And yes, it gets better after the third area. But the beginning was tense.

As much fun as it is to cut on it now, I'd have to agree. As soon as the opening credits rolled, with the train sequence, I knew something special was going on. It just got better from there. At the time, that game was the complete package, and it is kinda easy to forget that now. If Valve bottled any of that for HL2, the wait will certainly be worth it.

Right, I see some of the merit in Half life, but I dont understand why it gets so much praise. I think Quake 1 did more for the fps genre than any other game, particularly multiplayer, hell I played quake 1 all through high school and only stopped playing cause all the other assholes started playing Qauke 3, Quake 1 is my number 1 best game of all time. I also think CS should get more credit than Half life, and if you say its a half life mod, well then half life is a Quake 2 mod, all Half life had that was unique was the well scripted sequences that made the single player feel more movie like. Imho the multiplayer sucked ( mostly cause the rocket launcher was a piece of shit, compared to Quake 1/Doom II ).
WGARA, I can probably only see 4 games on your list that I liked, what I mean by depression is that the games that came out sucked, not that there were no games.

Flight sims are good...3rd person...well almost always suck (except for spiderman but that was on my ps2) FPS are good when you're not killing scientists with bugson they're head.
Doom 3 is gonna own. HAve the Alpha wit 4 maps which runs at 30FPS w00t.
HL-2...eh dont care about it
CS:CS - Heard people in forign states bombed the single player ahh!
LO:MAC - CAn't wait! Multiplayer should be fun.
Fair Stirke: looks nice
Secret Weapons over normandy looks good too!
Secret Weapons of World war 2 : gotta try demo
BF: Vietnam: Gonna OWN

Half Life
Counter-Strike
TeamFortress Classic
Opposing Force
BF1942
Vietcong
Enemy Territory
RtCW
Desert Combat
Medal of Honor Allied Assault
Those are my main...
BTW, just cause you think HL is the greatest game doesnt mean I have to LOVE it. Maybe, and like I said I don't like those futuristic alien games. Halo is an exception...
BTW I'm also a Marvel/Spiderman/Xmen/ those types of "comic" fan
