there is no "best".

i've heard the one with the greatest functionality is SuSe. The two that are easiest to learn on would be Redhat or Mandrake. I've installed it once (was kinda lost), and got scared and left :D

i suggest u either have a dedicated box or seperate a partition that u can always wipe if you mess up.

That's about all i can say, not having much experience with it.

I only use my second HD for temp storage (its only 4Gigs) so installing it on there won't be a problem. I don't plan on keeping it for long after i install it, I just want to mess around with it and see what its like.

Windows 2003 Server.... Common linux zealots, bring it on bitches, /me lock and loads. I installed it last night and I have never installed a server that quickly, including all the dhcp, dns and active directories. If I could have sex with it I would...

People who get attacked by those vulnerability holes are tards. If you dont run a firewall you deserve what you get. My XP machine didn't get that blaster shit purely cause I had that very simple tick box ticked on my dial up connection that says: Enable firewall for this connection. How hard is that?

I would recommend Linux Mandrake or maybe Red Hat, but I haven't tried Red Hat. I don't really have a use for Linux though, its just like windows only MUCH more confusing. Using your comp as a server would be the only reason I can think of for having Linux, as you don't gain much in stability over XP and Linux for usual use.

Well lad, there are two major distinctions when it comes to the linux distros.First how will you use linux,as a server or as a client,I know in your case it is definitely client one but hey there will be ppl reading it,
For server usages Slackware kicks some serious ass.A strong security,a real paranoid one I assure you,and lots of server utilities and its small size among distros make it the server queen of linux

but

for general uses and for a test drive I suggest rpm powered distros like redhat or mandrake.I don't know about redhat couldn't get one into my claws, but mandrake is a real nice kid, lots of eye candy programs, easy install suité..well..

that kinda explains it,eh?

Slackware. I use it - that's reason enough. And what the new guy said!
