Well..I am outraged,I am pissed off and angry...because they are duping us.Yes lads and lasses...I mean take a look to the Doom 3 news...they are saying that it is a remake of "glorious" Doom.Well I have nothing against Doom, but I am tired of exorcising bad bad souls with my "H.O.L.Y." shotgun. What happened to the plot? Who killed it?
Bloodrayne...well I expected more...the website was promising a near demigod vampire character..what we got is a booby bloodsucker...now AFAIK the boober the better but please I am tired of those bad nazi bad nazi flicks.
Renegade? Armed Buggy Combat in c&c universe..well kickass man...but when it popped up I saw that with a machine gun you can blow the hell outa a mammoth tank.
Me wants plot..me is ready to save the world/universe every day but I do not want to see how will I do that from the first frame of the game...
what do you think,folks?

I don't think game characters are going anywhere. It's just the compression of memory. It happens with movies, too. People think that there aren't any good movies these days, because there's been 80 some years for movies to come out. We just can't view our own time with as much removal as we do the other periods. I think this applies, though on a smaller scale. I think we're forgetting a bunch of smaller games that didn't have good characters. Rise of the Triads? Blake Stone? These were bad games. And C&C: Renegade is kinda old now.
You have a Duke quote in your signature, so I guess you're looking for wise-cracking ass-kickers. Well, what about Serious Sam? Even Will Rock? If you're looking for fleshed-out characters, what about Max Payne?
Or, if you really are looking for plot, why not turn towards role-playing games? They are dripping in plot and interesting characters. Minsc, from Baldur's Gate, is still one of my favorite computer game characters. Well, him and Boo. :)
And then there's Blizzard--especially Warcraft III. Or, if you don't want that, Mafia. Or, if you don't want that, Age of Mythology.
In short, there are a lot of good characters and plots running around out there. You just need to look.
