Is something running in the background, especially something that writes to the disk every now and then? (Folding@Home is a good example.) If so, you may never get your defrag op finished. Those idiotic programs that constantly poll a flatbed scanner to see if the cover on the scanner has been raised are another defrag killer. Or, perhaps your drive is simply hellaciously fragmented. (?)

You could try defragging in SafeMode, and see if that's any faster. I'm guessing it will be.

or maybe he just hasn't defragged for years and years. or it's the win9x defragger (which takes years and years to complete).

Well, what defragger are you using? Usually the first few percentage points are sorting and filing where everything goes, so it takes a long time even though when you're talking about actual data moved, it's a really small value hence 2%.
