If those semi reliable rumors are in fact true and disregarding all the performance issues Intel was (and is) involved in. It will take 3+ years for such technology to become a standart.

Here's an article I read on the web in the last few days, where some Intel executive was describing AMD's move to 64-bit computing on the desktop as being premature. "Moving beyond 32-bit addressing is "really not needed for several more years"."

http://www.theregister.co.uk/content/3/32839.html

And, I can very vividly recall some comments on the web from Intel bigwigs around the late February 2003 timeframe suggesting Intel probably wouldn't go 64-bit at the consumer level until possibly the end of the decade. Ah! I believe this is it:

http://www.computerworld.com/hardwaretopics/hardware/story/0,10801,78686,00.html

I really don't particularly care what Intel's plans are, but this current article that RAD has pointed out seems a bit at odds with what Intel's "elders" are espousing.

My mom actually works at Intel and she had to go in one weekend to work on a new chip that's being developed but she wouldn't even tell me what is was or how it workes :(

Well I can tell you one thing right now. Your mother is very dedicated person. Telling a member of a family is exactly how information leaks happen (you would tell us, we would pass the news further etc.). As every big company Intel naturally has a strict policy about information leaks. So don't be upset because she didn't tell you anything about the project. She just simply doesn't want to loose her job.

well said RAD.. and inquirer is shit.. they have all the speculative junk in there and then wham!.. they post the true news and become the hero.. thus far I am impressed by them.. they were the ones that said 9800XT would be clocked at 425 core and 750 memory.. and then they were the ones that came up w/ 412 core and 730 memory and now everyone thinks inquirer has all the shit.. wtf?

Intel is desperate now, they are going to fight via prices now, wich is good for us all, this is how it's suposed to be, I like AMD and think they have superior tech now, but the prices for Athlon FX are abit rediculouse now, but on the other hand so are the P4ExtremeE wich is just a same ol P4.

And oh yeah Microsoft doesnt think 64bit is useless, in fact I saw them saying on some news report that this is the next big thing and you those fuckers have the most influence in the damn market.

MS wants it to be the next big thing b/c it's about the only thing that can spur new Winblows sales. Windows sales are stagnating, and moving the industry to a new architecture that requires new Windows OSs is just what the doctor ordered for MS.

If you build it (AMD), they will come (software developers). Eg, devs will make use of whatever resources they have. The sooner you give them 16 exobites of RAM and 64bit pipelines to work with, the sooner they'll figure out how to use it all. It's unfortunate for Intel that they're so large and set in their ways that they've lost the drive to push the industry forward as fast as possible. Looks like AMD is carrying that torch now...
