This photograph was taken by the crew on board the Columbia

during itslast mission. This photograph was taken via satellite, on a

cloudless day. The picture is of Europe and Africa when the sun is

setting. Half of the picture is in night. The bright dots you see

are the cities lights. The top part of Africa is the Sahara Desert.

Note that the lights are already on in Holland, Paris, and Barcelona,

and that's it's still daylight in London, Lisbon, and Madrid. The sun

is still shining on the Straight of Gibraltar. The Mediterranean Sea

is already in darkness. In the middle of the Atlantic Ocean you can see

the AzoresIslands; below them to the right are the Madeira Islands;

a bit below are the CanaryIslands; and further south, close to the

farthest western point of Africa, are the Cape Verde Islands. Note that the

Sahara is huge and can be seen clearly both during daytime and nighttime.

To the left, on top, is Greenland, totally frozen. Fantastic photograph!

Beautifull picture. it's a shame what happened to those astronauts.
And you know your geography too. You got all the islands right.

Im sorry to burst your bubble, but there is no way this picture could be real. First of all, there are no clouds, there are almost always coulds in photographs from space, and this picture covers a very large chunk of sky. Second, you can see the bottom of the ocean. You cant see, no mater how hard you try, the mid-atlantic ridge from space, or from anywhere excepting a submarine. Third, unless they planted the tulip fields in Holland with lightbulbs, there is no way there could be that much more in Holland than there is in France, right beneath it. Also, the lights of Paris must be a fabrication, becuase a city cant produce that much light in daylight. I dont have anything against the great sacrifece the astronauts made, but i just noticed these things and thought I would point them out...

Actually, now that I think of it, it looks like someone photoshoped a picture from an atlas

I think he has a point... It does look fake. The only way to verify it is if you went back and looked at a weather map on the day it was taken to see the cloud formations.

The Atlantic looks too small, iceland is way too close.
