Maxtor or Seagate Hard Disc

ok here it is , my hard disc gave up on me , it was seagate 60gb Barracuda 7200rmp , it started showing bad sectors but i have the backup and now i will replace it, what should buy now , Seagate barracuda 7200rpm or Maxtor 7200rpm , my experience tell me Maxtor is more reliable than seagate

holy shit...i have the same hard drive,...i hope mine dont do that...but what happened...can u tell me how i can prevent this or was urs an older model...hell..i love my seagate, the most quiet harddrive you can get

also, if i was u, i would wait, get a serial ata hd controller for pci slot or onboard motherboard, and eventually when serial ata drives start to get better and faster so they hit the 150 mbps data speed, then get a new hard drive...

serial ATA doesn't have the best improvement; the thin cables are a nice touch though. i realize you have limited your options to a maxtor or seagate, but i reccommend a WD SE. fastest IDE drive there is (so says storagereview.com). i'd say the next best choice is an IBM 120GXP.....

ANYWAY, if you're bent on maxtor or seagate, i'd say go for the seagate. both are reliable, and seagates have an added bonus of quietness.

Seagate, I had 3 seagate harddrive and all of them I used for 1-2 years and then sold and np's, I also used Quantum fireball and it served me nearly 3 years so I guess I'm just lucky or a good PC user 8)

for me Maxter went gr8 too Redeemer but seagate here gives a good warrenty i mean if u have a problem they change the hard disc in three days and this the seagate 60gb barracuda which gave me problem two times and i have it replaced two times in warrenty b4 that i was like u feeling lucky :D well i think now i will replace this one and get another 40gb drive of MAxtor 7200rmp and make the replaced 60gb secondary drive

Obviously serial ata doesnt have an improvement yet because they have not added any new technology to hard drives yet because they are still made for the speed based on the ide standard, 100mbps and yet ide drives have still not got to that speed yet. However, eventually, serial ata drives will get better when they spend more time working on the design, and when they do get the best they can be, haha, no one will even think of ide ever again, i mean the cable setup is the easiest ever, its so much more convenient... no hard feelings there bud

oh, and ... maxtor drives ive heard of overheating issues, so i'd get a western digital just like the guy said if u really are hurting and need a new drive right now....... peace out... hope all this rantin helps...

Seagate is good...I have a Seagate 20gb 5400rpm drive that is almost 4 yrs old and has not given any problems whatsoever...Alongwith that I have a Seagate 80GB 7200rpm drive which is about 1 and a half yrs old...again without problems!

Seagate definitely or Western Digital.. i still got my Western Digital 10 GB 7200 rpm puppy and it rocks.. though i hate the noise on it.. Seagate is fucking quiet and i love it.. are u having fluctuation problems.. or something of that sort.. only that can cause bad sectors (or premature shutdown).. get a nice stabilizer this time..

BUT, while on the topic of generalization....
maxtors are loudest and fast
WD's are fast and tolerable
seagates are unnoticeable by the human ear, but aren't too quick
and IBM's are damn fast, tolerable, and DAMN HOT.

btw, we posted about SATA a while back. the new maxtor DM9's are THE QUICKEST THING AVALIABLE. i've read all the new reviews for this thing, and i am thoroughly impressed.

I base this on the fact that my dad has had about 4 and they all have failed within 2 years. Yes they are noisy as well like a lawnmower. I have had WesternDigitals fail on me though but I still like them. Some ppl say IBM fails alot but I have had 5 and run them hard with no problems so far.

oh man, dont get serial, thats gonna cost ya...its just like the onboard NFORCE chipset shit, serial ata has hidden costs, you hafta buy drivers for it like some 180bux!! of course I havnt read up on them since I heard of this. so maybe its changed. I would suggest not getting it. As for Seagate or maxtor, get Maxtor..much quieter I believe, and Seagate, I've heard way too many stories, your's just adds to it.

DUDE STFU!... seagate make the most quiet hard drives out...if u have heard the barricuda ata IV then you will change your mind... its the most quiet hard drive you can get...ive heard loud maxtors b4 believe me dude...man i can never even hear my hard drive even at peak load times..its so quiet :eek:

What might make or break the deal is the warranty. Most of the drive manufacturers have rolled back their warranty to 1 year, (down from 3 years). However, there are still some 3-year warranty drives in the pipeline and on store shelves. And Maxtor, just as one example, still gives you a 3 year warranty on it's high-end drives. (DiamondMax 9???) I believe WDC does, too, on it's top-shelf units. With all the fans most people have in their rigs, I can't see how you could hear the drive, but I can appreciate that you might want the quietest PC you can build. The last "IBM" drive I bought in December was made in mainland China. It might be a Hitachi, who I think took over IBM's hard disk operation. Seems we've reached the point where these things are so inexpensive, they're considered "throw-aways". I bought a 40Gb 7200rpm WDC over the weekend for $68.

and did u know SDRAM has to be refreshed ALL THE TIME? you wouldn't be able to save a damn thing on an SDRAM hard drive. might as well just go out and get yourself 2 gigs of DDR.

NAHHH man...ddr is a type of sdram you ass lol...but this thing im talkin about is a hard drive called rocketdrive...the only thing is...it needs to refresh itself every time you restart your computer...so i would say it sux...anyways...my drive is fast enough for me so what the hell are they thinking...how could 2 serial ata drives in raid ever lose...ohh wait...like ur ever gonna tell a difference between rocketdrive and 2 s-ata raid configs...woweee...fast as hell!

if u choose a benchmark, you'll see the scsi drive pretty much slaps the WD silly in all the tests (i think i found 1 or 2 in which it didn't). if you were even CONSIDERING scsi, i don't think cost would be the issue :)

but but but but but... since my mobo has serial ata raid onboard...i most definitely would get the wd raptor over any drive on that list just because serial ata is way more convenient and easy to set up...i just love them round red stock cables...:D

kinda funny...I know everyone's experience seems to be here that seagate is the best. But the hard drive was SEAGATE that failed on him, and ur tellin him to go out and buy another, I think thats a bit ridiculous..
