the ONLY time my win2000 has crashed is when ZoneAlarm and BF1942 got into a neverending loop over power, so it wasn't even win2000's fault.

i love my win2000

I voted for XP for the games it has served me. I'm a man who likes old stuffs that have been working with me for a time... My Matasonic motherboard, my Geforce2 MX, and such... 98 actually worked for me for a while, too, but it crashes almost daily. Xp gives me almost no trouble since it was out.

Tux all the way! Sure Linux is user-unfriendly, and is hard to set up, but it is stable, secure (if you know how to use it) and basically never crashes -- yes... i have crashed it :P

Runnin' 98Lite on two boxes. 98Lite gives you a TON of configuration choices that MS hides. You can completely rip all the Internet Explorer stuff out of Win98 and use the Win95 Explorer Desktop instead. Yeah, it looks and feels old school, but the idea, in my opinion, is to get to and run your games and apps, not play with gadgets and gizmos in your OS. It loads AND shuts down in seconds, you wind up with a smaller, less complex registry, and it's as stable as anything I've used. If you want IE, you can install it as a separate app. I'm running XP Pro and 2000, as well. XP is very slick, but it's WAY too bloated for this girl. I've got it on a real short leash. 2000 is very good, probably what I would settle on if I had to choose just one.

www.litePC.com if you're curious. If you have Win98, or even WinMe, you might find it worthwhile.

Yian
March 19th, 2003, 02:30 AM
98 does need a less complicated regi system. It sucked. Everytime you install, uninstall something, it is messed up. 98 is something you really can't use for more than 6 month because it will be filled with bugs. This lite thing does a really good job on that one. But, hellllll, whe cares about 98 these days... Xp is so much better. The only time I use my 98 disc is when I have to reinstall my Windows XP (because it is an upgrade version, not a full one.)

I use XP Pro and I love it. It isn't the most stable gaming platform at times, but it rarely ever crashes and it just feels tons more solid than ME or 98SE. Believe me I've had ALL the MS home use operating systems since 3.1. XP Pro is better than any other gaming operating system out there even with its problems.

March 20th, 2003, 10:38 PM
Used Win 3.1, 3.11, 95, 98, 98SE, ME, NT 4, 2000, XP Home and XP Pro.. but XP pro really does run better than anything else.. lastly.. windows 2000 is best for setting up a network and developing software but is very susceptible (to viruses and hacks especially from Linux Users hehe) as compared to RedHat Linux.. but for now i am working on 2000 for all s/w development applications and its pretty cool but for games i have got to say XP Pro is the best.. btw XP home really sucks dick.. i wonder why people buy the damn thing.. i know its cheaper but if u can spend 100 bucks more and get more stability do it dammit..

i have used win 95 ,98 , Me , XP pro , Win2000 ,
i think best sales were of win 95 and 98 and were not that bad but mellinium used to crash alot and has a bad performance , win2000 is safe and good in networking too , Linux is very very safe and win Xp crashes alot less than any other window and is compatible with multimedia so its good too

Win2000 is fun and all for a workstation (it's used at my work!) but it's not compatable for some perephials. XP pro seems just as stable to me and perhaps not as much a memory hog. *deleted*

98, millenium, xp home, they all suck.

aphremen
April 15th, 2003, 01:22 AM
Hehe, that's pretty funny Yian. :) Of course, if you were serious I don't think you can count them as actualy OSes because they are basically a GUI for DOS with a bit more tacked on. NT, XP, etc are based off a whole new Kernel with networking, multitasking, and stability all in mind.

Networking is way easier nowadays then back in the bad old days, not to mention running more than one proggie at once.

I have used:
MSDOS 5
MSDOS 6
Win 95A
Win 98 Second Edition
Win ME
Win XP Home
Win XP Pro
Had some realy quick glimpses of Win NT, but never realy used it much.
Mac OS 9.2

Out of those, XP seems to handle everything alot better - it crashes one Program instead of the whole computer, it hardly ever even gets to that stage, I have come across no major bugs in it yet, and it looks pretty. :)
Mac OS *sucks*.
Win ME *sucks*.
Win 95 *sucks*.
Win 98 is decent.
DOS is fun, and was good for it`s day, but a GUI OS just looks better. ;)

I`ve had absolutely no experience in *nix, so I can`t comment on it.
For those people who mentioned Windows versions pre 95, they didn`t pretend to be operating systems like the more modern versions do... when you turned on your computer, you weren`t actually straight in Windows, and closing Windows didn`t come up with a screen saying "It is now safe to turn off your computer", or turn the computer off for you. Windows was (and technically still is) a *program* rather than an OS, the difference now being that it does actually try to be one.

aphremen
April 19th, 2003, 03:16 AM
I just remembered, Norton had a bomb ass shell for win 3.1 that gave it some more functionality. I actually had different bootdisks for if I wanted to go into DOS, start up windows, start up windows with the norton shell, start up dos with networking then doom/doom2/RiseOfTheTriad multiplayer game client. :D Ah, those were the days...freeing up enough extended memory to play Tie fighter or x-wing...boy those games sucked.

Where do you live? If near some place that has a supercomputer, go dumpster diving, you might find working stuff that will help you build your own machine. Sounds unlikely but I've heard of ppl finding scsi controllers and power supplies and all sorts of things. Just find out where the super nodes around you are and ride your bike down there at the end of every day.

I think I'm the first one to bring up the glory of Mac OS (There are different versions FYI). The thing damn near never ever crashes, it looks gorgeous and can run a helluva lot of games very well even with low system specs. When Long Horn comes out with all it's advanced Spy Ware features, I very well may start using a Mac. Long Horn is just unacceptable from what I've heard about it.

I know it would NEVER happen, just because of all the OEM machines that would come with it, but I think it would be great if people, just once, just one goddam time, took a pass on Microsoft's next OS.

What we need is a currently available MS OS that's been thoroughly de-bugged. (And, guess who all the BETA-testers are?)

What we DON'T need, IMO, is an entirely new collection of some 300 billion lines of code, with all the related headaches that come with it.

I'm not a huge XP fan, but I'd rather see MS focusing it's resources on getting it as refined as possible, rather than Longhorn. I mean, after your OS is installed, all the end user is trying to do is reach his or her app, and run the damn thing, right? How much more CRAP do we really need on or beneath our desktops to play with, misconfigure, and eventually hose?

Smapdey just may have a point with the Mac. I've always described them as "girl's computers", but I wonder how often an Apple user has had to reinstall their OS, just to solve some issue where it let them down. Show of hands, please, boys and girls: how many times has everyone HAD to re-install Windows? (or, really wanted to, but couldn't for some reason?)

sushi128
June 11th, 2003, 01:26 PM
i speak for a friend here, but the reason a mac user might not reinstall is cause it's a bitch. he just handed it off to an apple tech.

and as for windows, i'd guess an average of 2 times of mandatory reinstallation for each version of windows.

i like the fact that u can mess with windows a lot more than u can mess with a mac. the "crap" comes in handy sometimes.

Yea 5 yrs. My family never really felt like updating. We were getting really good performance out of 95. It was the latest code build from like 97 when we got the computer. This was an upgrade from a Intel 468 running Win 3.1 . Anyway , so yeah I never used 98 or 2000 or ME. I don't know if I would have liked those, maybe 98.
