Frankly, i know crap about overclocking and recently fucked up my ASUS V7100 GF2 MX 400 by keeping it on 215/215 clock speeds with stock cooling.. now i dont know if that was a good idea.. secondly i will be getting my radeon 9700 soon and it will need to be overclocked too.. to 9700 pro speeds ofcourse.. but what i want to ask is what else do i need.. i mean cooling solutions.. please tell me ASAP so that i can order them now too.. and what brands do u recommend.. i know only of thermaltake.. any others.. help me out anyone.. this is a fucking SOS..

well...thermaltake does make a ram cooling kit that comes with small ram sinks i saw at a comp. show in pittsburgh, and i think it was just a general ram cooling kit...came with stuff for dims and also for just single chips of memory....that stuff would work good...
why dont u get a pre modded vid card like tyan makes a card called the tyan tachyon g9700 i think its called...already on blue pcb and blue sinks all over the card...its the nicest ive ever seen... check it out...and i think its also pretty cheap too!... but if ur gonna overclock a 9700 thats the card to get...theres an article in maximum pc mag about that card... but if u get a 9700, is there even a reason to go for 9700 pro speeds, it will be uber fast already...oh well... hope this helps u a bit...any other questions...just ask..i know a good bit about o/cing

Hey, was that you in Counter-Strike? I was playing CS and I saw a dude with exactly the same name as yours, using a scout in the CT team. I was in T all the time with an AK...

yeah cooling the chips can make them run faster.....i've also seen some tips in mags that show people sodering their chips making them overclock by 2-3 ghz  pretty insane, not too sure how you do that though......

sorry, but that's an intel mobo, and while u have one of the greatest overclocking chips avaliable, that motherboard isn't gonna take u anywhere as far as the cpu goes(i.e., no overclocking options WHATSOEVER). so forget it.
the 9700 on the other hand, should be able to hit a 350-380mhz core clock quite nicely, and mem, without cooling should do about 670 maybe? depends on luck. RAM sinks usually help 5mhz or so, but most engineers will tell you it's not the heat that holds memory back, but the fact that the rails just can't retrieve data that quickly. tweakmonster makes some nice ones, in any case...

Speaking of overclocking 9700 Pro, that's something I could never do. In fact, I have to "underclock" this shit so the games won't freeze. I tried to test the rig in 3DMark 03, and the shit never pass more than 3 tests! (either freeze or thrn off the monitor.)
Right now, both my memory and core speed are at 250Mhz... and everything appears to be fine. (Sigh...) All the money I spent and the shit won't work as it was designed... anyone has any ideas why this shit is happening to me please give a hand.

quite honestly, RMA that shit. if u even have to think of underclocking it, then u got the shaft pretty bad (especially cause it's a 9700 pro). if it's built by ATI, then you'll be fine; the RMA process with ATI is pretty effiecient.

as for the intel Mobo.. i cant do it.. DAMN.. DAMN.. DAMN.. Shit the fuck the bastard.. the muthafuckers.. oh well.. tell me is there possibly NO WAY to overclock my fucking CPU.. its rated the best overclockable chip on the planet damn.. i am going to get a new mobo..
as for my 9700 it will have samsung memory rated 2.8ns and it will be clock unlocked.. so i can overclock it but about my power supply will 300W power supply (came with my Mercury Casing) be enuff.. or will i require a new power supply.. i was thinking about adding a fan to casing anyways coz of the heat here in my country during june (its about 45 C)..
will post results soon.. when card arrives after a week or so.. and once again thanks..
recommend me a new mobo.. was thinking about MSI one coz ASUS is way too expensive here.. but still if u know a good overcloackable mobo tell me abt it..

Hey WGARA, are you thinking about water-cooling? If so, Koolance is a reliable co. They may not be the top-notch WC's but my system hasn't gon up more than a degree after overclocking the 2200+ to a 2400+!
Oh, nevermind! too late!

I dunno crap about cooling or water cooling.. but if u know a site from where i can learn then tell me about it..

Go to www.koolance.com or just read reviews of some water cooled products. I barely knew anything about water cooling and I bought my own koolance case. It was easy to construct and easy to learn! Just be very careful. I guess i was very lucky to get it running the first time w/out frying my shit.
Oh, check out this site:

Lol.. sorry man but i think i will just fry the damn thing.. better with a p41.8A than with nothing.. i think i will go with the copper fin solution.. those are also cool puppies

man, sorry if you didn't get my point :)
cooling helps when you're overclocking. that's it. nothin more to it. it doesn't improve system performance (actually, that's a technicallity). anyway....why in hell would u need water cooling if you CAN'T OVERCLOCK THE CPU IN THE FIRST PLACE??? the MOTHERBOARD does NOT support changing of FSB which is the ONLY way to overclock an intel!!
::vein in forehead violently erupts::
sorry. just wanted to set the record straight....
ok.....anyway, Yian, RMA is return merchandise authorization. it's the thing u do when u get a bad part; it's how u claim your warranty in the computer world. here:
http://www.ati.com/support/rma/index.html
if it's built by ATI, go there. if you got a third party card, like sapphire or gigabyte, get a hold of support through them.
and btw, koolance is the compaq's of water cooling; and thus, castration is imminent for the mentioning of it :)
but since u have one, i'll go on and say it's a great beginner's case. don't need to cut anything, fit anything, and that's always a plus.....

and can u recommend a nice overcloackable board for which can work fine under 45C temps with just fans (no water cooling for me plz.. jeez i am already scared :-)) and wont fry the crap outta my rig..
boardryder
March 19th, 2003, 01:41 AM
idunno, for the price koolance may be a compaq, hence the not top-notch comment. but id say 30c is pretty good when overclocking to 1.96ghz
sushi128
March 19th, 2003, 01:59 AM
hey, don't get me wrong. 30c is damn good. u COULD get better, say with cathar's beautiful stuff . that's all i'm saying (there's always somethin better, kind of deal). water cooling won't fry your rig. u clamp it right, there won't be any problems. as far as overclocking goes, the intel stock cooler is already VERY good. but if u insist on spending money, the swifty MCX4000 is awesome (maybe 2-3c cooler than stock).
as far as overclocking motherboards, it doesn't get any better than the IT7 MAX2 v.2. another one of those legacy free boards, but it gets the job done and more. and of course, the P4PE, another good board. and overclocking is relatively easy on air if you don't over-do it. the new TBred's as well as the northwoods do insane clocks on air.

If you were running a GF2 MX400, even at 215/215, (and that's QUITE an accomplishment in my opinion), I think you'll be so damn thrilled with your Radeon 9700 you won't even worry about overclocking it. I don't know what your earlier CPU was, but I'm guessing you'll feel the same way there. At least run the system awhile at stock speeds and give yourself a chance to enjoy what you have, as well as making sure it's stable to begin with. Instead of spending all your money on fans, heatsinks and even more exotic cooling, I'd recommend you get yourself an EXCELLENT POWER SUPPLY OF AT LEAST 350-400 WATTS! Because, if you don't, all the rest of this stuff WON'T MATTER! Yeah, I know, women aren't supposed to be authorities on this stuff, but I built my first PC in 1987, and have built, upgraded and repaired probably 100 or more since. I most certainly DON'T know everything, but I DO know what I just wrote to you is TRUE. Sorry for the lecture.

oh and whogivesaratsass: the best mobo ive heard of for intel pIV is probably Asus p4t 533-C

well, that board isn't quite the performer.....but ti does support RDRAM (the old kind anyway). besides, it looks like he wants to stick to DDR. i've always argued for going i850E, but i figured, who wants to spend that kinda cash?

RD Ram will only cost me a fortune.. thats why i am not buying it.. i want the ddr ram one.. how about p4pe asus.. will that do?

I don't see where we covered the exact same ground, "10 posts ago..." In any case, you're quite welcome, WhoGivesARatsAss; I'm certain you'll find any number of people here who will try and help you out. Good luck with the new hardware.
