Any reason you're avoiding Intel? (Price, perhaps.) I can't imagine anything more stable, P4-wise, than an Intel chipset. Especially on an Intel mobo, but then you sacrifice your O/C options. Hit the hardware sites, (AnandTech, Lost Circuits, [H]ardOCP, Tom's Hardware, etc.), and research the chipsets you have in mind. Best I can offer.

i'm thinking of buying a Asus P4S8X / LAN 8X AGP 533 Mhz.

lol, don't know what you would even consider VIA. in any case, i agree with Rhenna. Intel is by far the most stable, and coincidentally, best performing chipset avaliable. i guess you could try the new SiS648, but while you're thinking along those lines, might as well get a nice granite bay board.

best by far, i'd say is the IT7-MAX2 v.2
but it's expensive, and it has NO legacy ports (maybe you're still using a parallel device? not gonna do....)

and since you didn't really give a price range, somethin cheaper but still good would be the BE7.

no parallel ports...
since am also buying a geforce4 ti4200 128mb ddr 8x might as well buy a board that supports 8x.

oh btw, i haven't tried other chipsets, all my previous computers used via chipsets, including my current P3-500mhz.

Fuck Via and Fuck SiS chipsets.. and while u are at it.. get a radeon 9500 pro.. also get an asus p4pe board.. or the one u listed above will do too.. do not buy a via chipset.. if u have already used it u probably know all the hassles of it.. but everythin runs like a charm on a board with intel chipset.. get that.. its a must have.. ir if u have the bucks go for 850 emv2 or something like that mobo and it will rock ur cpu..
