View Full Version : Gamers poll

Eh, just a little poll on how you like to run your games. FX over resolution or resolution over FX
in order to have acceptable FPS Meaning which would you rather sacrifice?

So, for exampe:

Would you rather run Max Payne 2 at 800x600 with everything on high or 1024x768 with everything on medium?

But not MP2 specifically, I mean a general preference.

*Edit*

BTW, the first fucktard to say something along the lines of

"I don't care since I can play at max anyways." or something or other is going to get a dickslap in the face because that's what they obviously want, a dickslap in the face.

depends on the game and how much of a difference they make...

If I could run max payne on 800x600 with full detail and it looked better than 1280x1024 with medium detail, I'd go with the 800 one. A lot of games have "high medium low" features that don't even make a difference, except in your performance, though. But then there's also games in which the details won't affect performance much, but the rez affects it greatly.

This makes no sense. First of all shouldn’t it be in the PC Gaming section (since like it or not it is closely Gaming related)? And secondly, the question itself is, well bizarre. Logic suggests that in order to enjoy the game at its finest (at the low end PC especially) the settings should be at their highest, while maintaining playable framerate which inevitably leads us to the most logical solution, lowering the resolution. But I suppose for some finding the "golden middle" works as well.

PMS?

RAD, I respect your opinion man but honestly, just because that's how you play doesn't mean it's the "End all be all". My brother in law perfers resolution over graphics. He played the original Unreal at like 1280x1024 (Vedy vedy high for that time) and had everything on low. Equally, he could have had everything on high with 640x480 or so.

*Edit*

Replace any time I said graphics with "FX"

The logic which I speculate of in my post is my logic and expression of my personal opinion. Just remember for the further reference when reading my posts that it only expresses my personal point of view and not the voice of a thousand nations and millions of men.

RAD has a point, when you say "This game sucks", it's implied that it's your own opinion... same goes for that.

Ah. It's just that when someone says "Logic suggests" I think they're refering to common logic. Such as if you see someone on the ground with bullet holes in them, "Logic suggests" they were shot. I should have realised that you were talking about your own opinion though since you aren't ignorant.

I apologize. :)

I like both but fuck!! Far Cry runs like a fucking fat bitch that's been fucked up the ass a few too many times that night and is dead tired and ready to fall over on the side of the road and just sleep there all night and she doesn't even care if she gets run the fuck over.

That is when I crank the res up to 1280x928 and put every detail and AA and AF to the highest. It hurts my eyeballs like a motherfucker I have to tone some stuff down.

That fucking sucks.

Overal, I'd say it's better to have FX instead of high res.

I think Max Payne 2 is a bad example since I can run it at 1280x1024 Max detail... O_o

I perfer resolution. I hate when all the text is huge and in your face. Mind you I run all my games at 1024x768. Need a new processer to suuport my video card. I usually never mess with the FX cause normally I don't see improvements.

I can run Morrowind at 800 X 600 and get awesome fps, bt the jaggy was killing me!!! Now I play a choppy game at its highest res possible. So I guess I prefer resolution better.

But it can't be too bad. If the pic quality is great but the fps is below 5, that's not going to work.

So can most of you tell the difference between high settings and low, or lets say meduim settings? I said FX b/c I really like to see things with there full detail. Like a few of you said you cant tell the difference between high and low, I can tell very easily. The slightest adjustment turned down I can tell the difference. I guess I just notice little things really easily thats why. So I would much rather FX b/c I really HATE lowering my settings. Sometimes, I want the game to look good so badly I just deal with 17 frames through the whole game. I am sure not many of you would ever imagine dealing with that. But I hate playing a game that doesnt have its full detail.

This was actually a tough choice for me, and I hadn't really thought about it in quite this way before. I went with resolution.

I certainly don't agonize about needing to run everything maxed-out with AA and AF set through the roof, nor obsessed with the need to have 85fps on a moment-to-moment basis. As future man once said, "I don't have ridiculously high expectations about how things should run". A good game is worth playing even with marginal graphics; a bad game could look as real as life itself, and run like a stallion, but I still wouldn't want to bother with it.

I've been using the LCD flat-panel to game with in recent months, and running pretty much everything at 1280 X 1024, the panel's native resolution. That alone does wonders for the look of a game, IMO. I also prefer to keep the detail on character models high, as well as textures in general. I'll trade most any other FX, like shadows and decals for example, to keep those as detailed as I can.

FX and then resolution eventually.. I tend to find the sweet spot for the game to run on my pc.. so.. neither has precedence over the other.. but if you really want a poll..

Full screen effects!

i'll take resolution over effects any day. if i could play 1600 x 1200, no AA, 4xAF, sans shadows, lighting tricks, etc i would.

FX over resolution. I played that DOom3 alpha at 640x460 with every effects on high. It still looks good to me, jaggies weren't a problem coz the game was dark. :D

Anyways, I think this is the main reason why people choose consoles over PCs. Upgrading is a pain.

For example: If you had a low end PC what would you have preferred over what. Rather than fitting the question asked to our own gaming machines.

Resolution, with any game I play I like to see what is around me. Running games at lower resolutions is like looking through a peep whole.

Rhenna - ...I also prefer to keep the detail on character models high, as well as textures in general. I'll trade most any other FX, like shadows and decals for example, to keep those as detailed as I can.

I agree, I could care less about minor eye candy. I want the things that I am going to be looking at the most to look the best and the things that I just glance at (like decals) might as well not be there.

i dont go below 1024x768 on my 19" or else it looks like total crap. Every time i get a new game i start by setting it to 1024x768 and then setting everything to highest. If it still goes very fast i up the resolution a notch, then another til im satisfied. If its slow i usually tweak the settings and lower the details. i'll only lower the rez when i really have to.

I agree low resolution looks like you are looking through a peephole at the world around you. That's why I run higher res.
