Hey I want to get a new hard disc. Something really fast and with lots of space. Was looking at this one on newegg for 150 bucks: Maxtor 120GB 7200RPM Hard Drive 8MB OEM. I dont really want to spend more than 150, but is there any other ones i should be looking at?

I don't have any advice to give, but i just want to say one thing... It takes me about 30 Mins to defrag my 20Gig HD.... I don't even want to think about how long it would take to defrag a 120Gig HD.... THE HORROR!!! THE HORROR!!!

Well i've got a 40 and a 20 now.... defragging just happens when i go to work. I just need more space for games and movies.

I recommend a Western Digital 120gb with the 8mb cache. Thats a sweet harddisk.

pointless to defrag - just format... defragging isn't all that great.

defrag does do a lot of good, but only to a certain point. after you've filled your hard drive up to a certain amount, moving everything towards the beginning of the drive isn't gonna move it very far....
BUT, if you've only filled %10 of the drive, and all that info is stuck on the outer edge, then there is a HUGE performance gain to be had by defragging. if u need proof, run HD tach and see the difference in speed between the start and end of the drive.
that aside, i reccommend the WD SE with 8mb cache.

Note that while defrag may be useful for... 10%? filled harddrives, most of us have ours near packed, so defrags aren't all that amazing.

well, i know one thing that u ALWAYS want at the start of the drive, and that's the paging file. i suggest getting a program that puts it there.
as for filled drives, we all know what they're filled with, and that can stand to be cleaned up a tad ;)

Ok thanks for some of the info guys. The thing is that i know i want one with 8 mb cache. The other thing is that i know my mobo has ata 133 and i think that maxtor is the only one i have seen that uses it. Is it worth it to get the ata 133 drive? I have a 40gb on ata 133 and it seems to be pretty good. I just want to get a shitload of space so i can do anything i want.

ata/133 offers MINIMAL (marginal, unnoticeable) increase in speed over ata/100. that said, if the ata/133 costs even a dollar more than the ata/100, forget it.

maxtors perform basically silently, except for their spin up...but of course you dont notice the thing after that happens. Seagate...I've heard bad things about them, early corruption, lost partition eeeeeew....WD yeah the 8mb cache one is kickass but thats all I'd recommend....NEVER get a QUANTUM those things are loud as SHIEWINGIWEROIG!!!!
