Hey, I just ran the disk clean up utility in XP. After it finished searching for files that were unused I was able to choose what to delete and what to keep.
One of the options was "Old Compressed Files". Now I'm not sure whether or not I should check this option because I don't know what these "old compressed files" are. Any help?

do you mean 'compress old files' ?
xp keeps tab on which files get accessed, modified, etc. through the windows installation's life. files that have been around for a while, in an untouched state, are tagged for compression. when you run disk cleanup, windows merely notifies you of those files, and allows you to compress them to save space.
i know using file compression, ala drivespace back in the 9x day, would hurt performance; i'm not sure whether it's still as applicable in win xp.
if you're not hurting for harddrive space, then leave the 'old files' in an uncompressed state; reverting files from the compressed state is an excersise in extreme tedium :(.
