View Full Version : When does cheating become a bad thing?

IMO, some cheats are really fun, like say some of the cheats from the original AoE when used in a skirmish. But when does cheating cross the line? I mean, stuff like invincibility for multiplayer is obviously over the line, but what about say, the map hack for D2?

i say anything used online is way past the line

I agree, except in some special cases (like something that doesn't affect game play.) But what about the map hack for diablo 2? It's fairly harmless, and it does get annoying to search the map all the time...

isn't map hack knowing EXACTLY where the enemy is?

Sort of... It does display where monsters are, but it's not too hard to find monsters anyways... A map hack for most other games would be really cheap though

no, i think that's crossing the line, and any other cheating online is crossing the line
there's a reason the "map hack" wasn't included in the game

Yup... what really pissed me off about diablo 2 were all the people who were rushed to some high level just to get better items etc... Anyways, I'm not trying to defend map hack I just wanted to see where the line was in this community...

I think ANY hack or cheat in multiplayer is WAY over the line, including messing with the game's .ini files. If it isn't available in the configuration menus, it wasn't meant to be.
Single player games are entirely different story. There's a very thin line between making a game challenging, or just simply frustrating. Some examples: 1.) You've spent 45 minutes combing every square inch of a map for some damn switch or key you need to exit the level. 2.) You keep falling into the abyss because you missed the last of seven consecutive jumps you must make on moving platforms by two inches. 3.) You've got some crappy weapon with a rate of fire that a flintlock would put to shame; your opponents have superior weapons, and there's eight of them and they all spring on you at once. Then, add into this mix those games that don't allow "saves" during a mission, or only at certain points. I HATE having to resort to a cheat in order to proceed, and I immediately disable it ASAP, but I damn sure plead guilty to using them sometimes. :(

Hitman 2 is so much fun with or without cheats, it's just such a great game

One time I resorted to cheats in a game was Warcraft3. It was lagging like mad and I'd already beaten the campaign on my friends computer, so I used the invinicibilty cheat

I hate the cheaters because usually there are only a handful of people cheats while most of us don't. In CS there are so many cheaters I rarely play the game anymore. I say when your cheats is causing other player's frustrations, then it crossed the line. What is the fun of playing CS if you never survive more than 15 seconds because your enemies' bullets shoot through walls and they knew exactly where you are, whil you can't do none of the above...?

I do not cheat in Multiplayer anymore. I use to cheat like an miserable son of a bitch because hey, it was funny as hell.
I cheat in Single Player if it's available and if I feel like it. That's only in games where I'm going to get my ass handed to me as of recently. I typically used to go look for cheats. I don't think I ever played Empire Earth or Civ 3 legit.

D2= Diablo 2? If so, then I used to play it, but my hard drive was wiped and I'm too lazy to install it again... I didn't notice that much cheating

Like many, I also think that cheats for online play are meaningless and spoil the fun of online gamers. However, singleplayer cheats are perfectly fine, since the only person playing it the gamer himself and if it makes him happy, why not?

definitely, online game needs time and sacrifices to play, and i've seen MANY online games get screwed by hacks. and i'm pretty much the victim. there was this JY Online. i played it for 2 years and ppl used hack and srpung up better then me in just 1 week.
i gave up all hope on online games after trying two more other and facing the same fate. lol. but it gave me more time on other stuffs.
but cheats in single player is fine i think. sometimes its too time consuming and not worth playing so damn long. but games that involves strategy and stealth should not need cheats, these involves skills

so.....from what i've heard, cheating crosses the line when it starts to affect others, and when you cheat in SP, you're just cheatin yourself, and when it's against a computer (eg, skirmish) it's fun watching it squirm cause it thought it had the upper hand in the first place.......
u know in RTS games, the computer actually has a revealed map and no FOW??? :(

Skirmish games with cheats are fun as hell... The most fun I ever had was with RA2, without cheats though. I basically dismantled a massive base step by step with chrono legionaires (sp?)

lol, i remember in that game when i just chrono'd the enemy's tanks into the water. i think that was pretty cheap....

when you use them before you beat the game....that's my point of view but after that they're great expecially in GTA3 :D

Hobbes, I agree with you, but for some people it's just plain fun to cheat in SP.

Example of ultra fun cheating: Jedi Outcast! Having massive force powers, a light saber, all weapons, and the ability to hack people into pieces on the first few levels makes them worth playing! Stormtroopers think a weakling with a bryor is going to come at them from behind a door when a Jedi rolls in, leaps into the air, kicks their buddy in the face, does a back flip, and decapitates them, all while blocking the few shots they manage to squeeze off? Tell me that that isn't awesome!

i love in that game putting mind control on super high, and you can walk around as them! it's even better if they have grenade thingies, cuz you can take contol, kill "yourself" and go back
