Looks like I decided to drop in at just the right moment. I haven't bothered to see how the media is spinning the expiration of the "1994 Public Safety and Recreational Firearms Use Protection Act", but I can imagine that this (non-)event is probably suffering from a certain lack of accuracy that typifies how most firearm-related matters are handled.
As guns belonging to a class of weapons capable of firing multiple rounds with a single depression of the trigger, you CANNOT now buy, for example, a genuine AK47 or Colt M4. Nor, could you purchase them prior to the passage of this Act in 1994. Such weapons, (full-auto), have been illegal to sell to the general public in the USA since 1934. ("National Firearms Act of 1934")
While it IS possible to obtain a special license to legally own a weapon capable of firing full-auto or multiple rounds in the USA, there is, as one might imagine, a considerable amount of "government oversight" that goes hand-in-hand with their possession. The last time I read a review of this program, now spanning some 70 years, only four (4) of these weapons had been involved in any sort of skullduggery, at least one of which was a suicide. (That one had to be interesting...)
You MAY now buy 19 particular firearms, or guns that share certain characteristics with these 19 firearms, that were banned for sale these last 10 years. NONE of these weapons are capable of full-auto or multiple-round fire. Guns that are functionally identical to these previously banned 19 weapons were offered for sale during the entire 10-year lifespan of this Bill. Simply put, this is, IMO, a less-than-newsworthy event.

Fine, just don't invite the wrath of the Feds. I'm not sure you can reach the AT Forums in Federal prison. ;)
"A violation of the NFA (National Firearms Act, 1934) can result in a
felony conviction, punishable by up to ten years in prison, and/or a $250,000 fine.
See 26 USC sec. 5871.
The US Sentencing Guidelines ordinarily require prison time, even for
a first offense, however various mitigating and aggravating factors can
raise or lower the possible sentence range for a first offense.
In addition, any NFA weapon ever transferred or registered in violation
of the Act, is subject to civil forfeiture. See 26 USC sec. 5872.
A forfeiture proceeding is separate from any criminal prosecution, and
a resolution of a criminal proceeding in favor of the defendant will not
preclude a forfeiture action. See U.S. v. One Assortment of Eighty-Nine
Firearms, 465 U.S. 354 (1984).
A violation of 18 USC sec. 922(o) of the GCA (Gun Control Act, 1968)
can also bring up to a ten year prison sentence, and/or a $250,000 fine.
Again, prison time is likely, even on a first offense. Using a machine gun
or a silencer in a crime can result in a sentencing enhancement of thirty
years, even if there is no NFA prosecution. See 18 USC sec. 924."

I'm a big fan of the Famas because of how many roles that gun can fulfill, literally, that gun can do anything.
However, right now I am of the opinion that it is completely worthless for the good many of us to own guns, and that serious, serious regulations should be imposed. Let's worry less about the gay marriage that isn't hurting anyone, but way more about all of the gun violence that is taking place and that will likely continue in the future.
That being said, I come from a family with lots and lots of firearms, and my childlike curiosity in them has dwendled quite a bit.

September 13th, 2004, 07:59 PM
The way I see it, the people who are going to do illegal stuff with the guns already know how to buy them. If they are banned, they will find a way to get the illegal weapons.
I'm not saying that they shouldn't have regulations, I'm just sayin' that it won't matter to the people who want to do illegal stuff with them.

closest I've ever been to a real gun is when I'm standing near a cop. I'd rather jump outta the shadows and jam a knife into someones neck than shoot em. There's just something about having their blood spray across my fist that gets me all giddy.

What the fuck people. You could still buy these weapons during the ban. The damn news is making it sound like you couldn't and some of them are making a big deal about it. You can get a Romanian AK47 for $297.00 new. An M4 though (like in my sig) will cost over $600 or more.
All the ban did was limit what weapons could have on them. Such as beyonet lug, collapsible stock, and flash suppressor. Some post-ban AK47s could only use fixed 10rd mags. But during the ban you could still purcase pre-ban AK47s.
Anyway, hope some of you guys go out and buy some. Im saving up for this puppy. Its $600.

Exactly true. I feel bad for those living in states with unconstitutional laws. TopSecretBoy look on the bright side though. California's laws are going to be taken to the supreme court soon so you guys might have a chance.
The Federal Ban expiration only effected states with no assault weapons laws. So if you live in a state with a law you do not benefit. Check www.Packing.Org if you are one of those states. So far I know of CA and NY but there are others.
Here is a video of my dad firing his awhile back. His is 100% Russian parts. His AK47 (in the video) has a 75rd Drum which as of now is legal to manufacture again and his weapon was and still is equipped with a Hellfire Trigger System. Reason why he is firing his gun like that. A hellfire doesn't make the gun fully auto by selection, it attaches to the gun and uses the recoil of the gun bascially its "bump-firing" if you guys know that termnology.
DivX codec required - Click to view video (http://myweb.cableone.net/wdavis/ak47.avi)
Here is a picture of his AK47. He purchased this weapon during the "Assault Weapons Ban" because the weapon was manufactured before the ban went into affect in 1994 it was legal to purchase it with its cosmetic configuration.

During the ban it was illegal to manufacture and sell high-capacity magazines. Manufacture was restricted to LEO (Law Enforcement Only) and Military use only.
