I have tried it, but there arent many differences between XP and Longhorn. Its more of an add-on than a seperate OS. The side bar that you may have seen in screenshots, is awful and hogs ur sys resources even on a beast of a machine.

Basically its mainly GUI improvements that have been implemented in this version so far. Not really worth a purchase when its released in my opinion.

thx for reply.

I hope there will be major changes till it'll be final next year.
In my opinion I think they did a good job with XP.
It's probably the best OS the ordinary user can get.

M$ are releasing a new OS in Sept this year. This may or may not be Longhorn.

However, if it is it will be a huge flop because they will not be able to implement many new features before then.

Lets hope they dont release longhorn then, they release media center edition or something like that.

Is Longhorn 2003 .Net Server?

Or am I mistaken...

Longhorn is not .NET server that is a completely different thing, i think it is called Windows 2003 Server at the moment, but who knows what it will end up being called.

Longhorn is supposed to be a new personal computer operating system, to replace Windows XP. But its not much different in my opinon.

I agree you 'future man' they should sort themselves out and properly beta test the OS's before release. However, the problem with the market is that everybody is so dependent on M$ stuff that they wll even accept incomplete, non-fully-tested operating systems.

I also use Linux, but I find that Windows is useful for chilling out, as my games run on that OS, and without games we cannot function :) Linux doesnt come close to windows in compatibility or usability. Although I am only basing this on my limited experience with two linux distributions (Red Hat and Mandrake).

So it looks like MS has dumped it's stupid privacy invading ideas for thier next "generation" of stuff?

madda, those two Linux flavours you mentioned have been designed with Window's user's in mind a lot. Try some raw nix, like slackware ;)

heh, it's the only OS the ordinary user can get.

Longhorn is not Windows Server 2003, it's the next version of Windows (the successor to Windows XP). The single most important difference is that it uses a new file system - WFS (Windows Future Storage) - based on a relational database rather than the traditional heirarchial file/directory organization. It should improve search functionality and performance. It'll also have a nifty *cough* new GUI based on 3D graphics. Why we need a 3D gfx-based GUI on a 2D monitor escapes me, but you can be sure it'll hog both diskspace and system resources like an obese whore hogs cum doughnuts. Here's a couple good sites to read more about it:
