View Full Version : CNC Generals: Good or bad?

I would like to discuss whether this is a good or bad game.
In my opnion the graphics/multiplayer are excellent, but the singleplayer storyline sucks. It needed FMV like all the other previous games from Westwood. The FMV brought the game to life and added little bits of humour.
If you asked me what the storyline was in Generals, I really wouldnt be able to answer you.
Whats your opinion?

I like the fact that you can build more than one superweapon and can have massive tanks that you can upgrade. The graphics are pretty neat too however, what I don't like is the story; it was weak, and it some parts non-existant. Also, the fact that the armies are very balanced is such a welcome feature, however, you can make a totally suicidal defense with China.
All in a all, it was a fun game, weak story, and some other things I didn't like.

I think it was the ATrip review or somewhere else that said it best...
With so much time spent on developing the graphics, gameplay elements and so on that the development team simply did not have time to create a fullblown singleplayer campaign/storyline so they just threw a buncha stuff together and now if you notice the latest patches are actually focusing on the multiplayer aspect and pretty much ignoring the singleplay.

The sides were reasonably balanced, however, the GLA SCUD Storm is much better than its counterpart superweapons.
1) It covers a wider area than the other superweapons
2) Detonation of each SCUD is nearly as powerful as nuke
3) Leaves behind residue that kills and destroys things
Generally its a pain in the arse and so much better than what th other guys have.

Meh. I played it but not extensivly. It's really a mixture of C&C and StarCraft/Blizzard RTS really. Fun.

I used my C&C Generals disk as a drink coaster to piss off my friend who wanted it and unfortunatly ruined it. I haven't been able to play it.

Well... I do think that the lack of a strong storyline is a very big drawback... In most of the RTS games, especially Warcraft and Starcraft, you have tons of background informations for each units, buildings, techs... so on, and it really put me into the gaming experience more. Now... Generals doesn't do that!

You know what would make C&C Generals better a mod that made it into a tower defense game! Tower Defense is the bomb, gotta love the guys who thought that up for WC3.

I really hate Generals because I get my monkey-ass kicked all over the place when I play multiplayer. That and it's buggy and it hates my duel monitors. By that I mean my mouse scrolls off the game screen and onto my other screen. Then when I click on the other screen the game minimizes itself and I use horrible, horrible language. Did I mention that I sucked at the game too?

I love Generals just as much as I loved all other C&C games. This one lacks the story but the multiplayer aspect is phenomenal! I hope this game finally overthrows Starcraft from the throne!

i just started the campaigns and so far ive seen nothing outstanding. not only theres no story, but theres nothing memorable, maybe except the dam that explodes, which was pretty damn nice. maybe ill have to go on to see more.
hell who cares about the campaigns, i got this game for MP in the first place, and also for nukes :D. MP is pretty good, although i dunno if its me but infantry feel alot less useful than they were in RA2. I think its the fact that they can get crushed too easely by tanks. maybe id have to play some more. another thing that pisses me off is that rifle infantry garrisoned into buildings cant even shoot units that are firing at the building since they dont have the range. it makes them much less effective, and i usually end up filling buildings with rocket guys since they can actually do something.
overall i think its a really good game, although with a few balance issues here and there. graphics and MP mostly make the game, but the campaigns really lack. if anyone knows any ways i could make better use of infantry i'd like to know.

WHat? Infantry were actually good in previous C&C's(I own the C&C Theater of War so yeah, I'm kinda justified)? All I remember is lots and lots of tanks. And supaweapons. And naval battles. And bascially vehicles... lots and lots of vehicles.

March 4th, 2003, 07:11 PM
yea another thing that saddens me are the missing naval units. damn i miss the days in RA1 when i had a bunch of cruisers bombarding from one side of the map to the other....
and about infantry, the only thing i dont like is the fact that they can get crushed too easely in generals. in the other game you had to force move with alt. in this one, since theres no more grid like terrain, you can just make your tanks move across the bunch of infantry and quickly kill em. that was much harder to pull off in previous C&C titles.
Raxc
March 4th, 2003, 08:03 PM
True but I really wasn't a fan of any naval battles in a C&C game. The controls and actual physics of the naval units... sucked.

March 4th, 2003, 09:31 PM
I dunno, I've heard mixxed reviews about it.....like it wasn't made by westwood and lost a felling that C&C once had.....but I've also heard it's pretty damn cool.
PHAT_ASS
March 4th, 2003, 09:36 PM
well it might be alot different in terms of interface and management, but it still feels like C&C for some reason.
Raxc
March 4th, 2003, 09:56 PM
It feels like C&C because it is C&C. Only difference is that it's 3D and instead of a side bar with options it's individual buttons. I said it before and I'll say it again...
It's a WarCraft III/STarCraft + C&C cross.

C&C: Generals is a kick-ass game! So far.
Unskinnybob and myself are playing our first multiplayer game tonight... we'll see what happens. I generally suck at multiplayer RTS games...

Hi
I have Generals and I love the skirmish. One thing I like is that you can be on teams with computers, against computers. The pathfinding gets a little weird sometimes, but it's generally O.K. Your units sometimes decide it would be more fun to watch themselves die then try to prevent it. That pissed me off a few times. I really do miss naval units though (even though I hated them at the time they were there). One major plus is air units. GLA doesn't have them, China has a Mig, USA kicks ass in the air. The GLA counters it perfectly with Ant-Aircraft.
The single-player has no story, but it's missions have a different feel to them. It's not just build up a large enough foce and destroy enemy's base. That's what skirmish is for. For example, one of the US mission where you have a small base on a side of a canyon. US forces you can't control come through the canyon heavily damaged closely followed by GLA forces. A certain number of US forces have to make it through the canyon without being destroyed.
In short, even though there is no story, it does have some inventive missions, and skirmish is funner than hell.

The cruiser physics weren't that hard to hit with. You just had to aim a bit in front and BOOM....

Well, since the game is so poorly programmed that it is still unplayable on my rig, the ONLY game of the more than 200 titles that I own I might add, I cannot vote for anything other than the game being bad.
What I have seen from the campaigns is downright pathetic. It's the most stereotypical piece of drivel I seen in a long time and fancy graphics cannot be any means make up for the completely nerfed controls and shoddy story.
If EA had hyped this game as being a multiplayer ONLY game, I might have accepted many of these shortcomings (but I sure as hell wouldn't have bought the game), but they didn't so all I can say is: "Shame on you EA"

I thought it was boring and redundant - it didn't mean the standards of the previous titles in the series. I think they should have stayed with 2D graphics like in Red Alert 2.
