You know I just joined this forum last nite. And I think I chose the right user name.
Because as I read through the differant threads I've started to wonder if I'm the only one on the web using a prehistoric outdated, old 120 mhz pentium. I got a 6.5 gig hdd that has hundreds of bad clusters on it slaved to a 1 gig that came with the system. And all in all it does a pretty good job even if it is slow as a snale.
But then maybe thats because I know how to caress it. Infact that is all I have ever had is old prehistoric rigs.
Atleast till I took the trash out on nite about a month ago. Behold in the dumpster was a rig calling, no screaming my name. I thought I hit the lotto!!!
After getting it going I discover that it has a boot virus on the drive. It's a 533mhz celeronw/64 mgs ram, tyan i810 mobo.
Being that I've had to time to time reformat my drives before, on the real old ones. I reformated, and ran fdisk mbr to get rid of the germ.
EEEEEYYYYYYYOIOOOOO!!
Well I descovered that win98 did'nt have the drivers for the chipset. And since it did'nt come with a backup disk. LOL I have had no luck getting it going again.
Anyway thats another topic.
But I have always been wondering why it is that ppl well throw away working rigs, bury them in a pile of junk where ever they keep it and forget them.
If your not gonna sell them, then at least wipe the drive, reinstall the OS and go find a kid at the nearest school that needs a rig to learn on. And give it to him,or her.
Cus after all a mind is a terrible thing to waste. and so is a working rig nomatter how old it is.
I am living proof of the point I'm trying to make. They told me that this rig would never work online. And it's faster then the old 75 mhz w/16 megs ram running win 3x that I started with last year. And I had it online also at first. Till it got fried from lightining.
I wonder how meny of u know dos and the old win3x? I've got alot to learn about this win98. But I well just as I learned before.
Ya I like to play games some but I like surfing the most. And it works for me. But I do wish that I could get the newer rig going.
Who has the oldest rig in here? Besides me?
Just wondering?

I have a Commodore64 in the attic that I used to teach myself 6502 machine language when I was 14. Then I built my first PC, an 8086, two years later. You guys are making this girl feel really old...

I gave my friend my old computer to tinker with... only things missing were hard drive and powersupply (burnt out) Unfortunately, I lack the funds, willpower, and skill to tinker with anything electronic.

Wow, Rhenna beat everyone here, she is straight up old-school. My old man used to build pcs back in the late 70s but the first pc I used was a x386. I actually have a burned out 8086 chip as a keychain. It's amazing how small it is.
It still amazes me when I see stats on my pc and it says "40gigs of space total, 8gigs available", and 1600mhz. Used to be that new generations of hardware could process more operations per cycle, nowadays it's all about how many cycles per second...OI!

yeah, it's nice to have hard drives at all. Even when they were teeny tiny it was great. But nowadays, you can have tons of mp3s, plenty of proggies, your OS, everything! Eventually even the contents of your brain! WOOT!
Right now, I don't even have a FDD. It is...illogical.

My computer history:
486, don't remember much about it.
P133, 32MB ram, 1.5 GB, 2MB video
P167, 64MB ram, 1.5+3 GB, 2MB video
Celeron 1700, 256MB DDR, 60GB, GeForce4 MX, 64MB
Kinda steep rise from the third to the fourth, don't you think?^^
