View Full Version : Real Robot Soldiers for Pentagon

I came across this article on the net:

Pentagon to pay millions for Scots’ robot soldiers

ROBOT soldiers manufactured to kill enemy troops have been designed for the Pentagon by a tiny Glasgow computer company which is set to make millions from the deal.

Essential Viewing says the technology comes straight from the world of science fiction. Chief executive Simon Hardy said the technology had its nearest equivalent in the Star Wars movie Attack Of The Clones.

In the film, armies of robots are able to fight running battles, making human casualties, for the side possessing the technology, a thing of the past.

The equipment refined by Essential Viewing will see robot vehicles equipped with an array of video cameras and weaponry. The images picked up by the robots will be instantaneously relayed back to military commanders who can then move the robot or order it to shoot at targets.

With current technology, which attempts to relay live video images between one side of the globe and the other, there is a significant delay – making it impossible for the military to use a robot “with vision” in the battlefield effectively.

However, with the Essential Viewing system there is effectively no delay: military commanders see exactly what the robot sees at exactly the same time.

“The transmission is truly live,” said Hardy. “Which means a person watching what the robot sees can make it interact with the environment around it. Using current technology, if a robot sees a target then the delay means that it is impossible for the military commander to make the robot follow it accurately or target it properly.

“With our technology, it is as if the military commander is in the battlefield himself. Our company, which has just 15 guys in Glasgow, is the first to crack this technology and we are ahead of the world.

“Wars are becoming increasingly costly in political terms because of human casualties. Rising death tolls can even bring down governments. There has been a huge push to get technology to the stage where humans can be taken out of the frontline.

“Our technology means you can steer an unmanned tank, plane, boat or a robot on the frontline from a military base behind the lines or in another country. The intention is to create wars without humans. We are going in the direction of Stars Wars and Attack Of The Clones-style combat.”

The Glasgow technology has been designed under the US government’s $15 billion Future Combat System programme. Some of the research was conducted at Sandia National Laboratories in New Mexico, which is managed by the arms company Lockheed Martin under the auspices of the Pentagon.

According to Hardy, there is “similar interest” from the Ministry of Defence in the work his company is conducting. Although he is unable to disclose details of the full value of the work as the technology is classified, it is thought to run into multi-millions of pounds.

“We are taking part in a revolution in warfare,” he said. “This could make war much less likely as regimes which threaten the allies may see this as a deterrent as allied armies will lose very few casualties.”

Essential Viewing’s technology has already been tested in the US by the military driving a robot around New York. Hardy said the robot looked like a multi-armed sophisticated bomb disposal vehicle, adding that the technology was down to “some very scary maths”.

“This is the product of years of research,” he said. “We’ve been working on this for six years and have no close competitors.”

Armed robot vehicles could be dropped out of planes and left to roam enemy territory to scout for targets which they could attack themselves or pin-point them with lasers for bomber planes to take out.

“This will allow the military to use robots to do almost anything that a human can do on the battlefield,” said Hardy. “But the benefit will be that there will be no humans there.”

Hardy joined the company in early September 2001, intending to use the technology to send live images to mobile phones – but then September 11 happened.

“The bottom dropped out of the entertainment market at that point,” says Hardy, “and the defence and security industries surged. We were able to switch our technology to a military application.”

The technology can also be used for law enforcement covert surveillance, recovering victims in natural disaster and tackling domestic terrorism.

I have yet to locate a photo but if anyone can help me follow this up we might get to see what these things actually look like.

War is not just about desturctions! When we must send soldiers to the battlefield, these men carries our faith and belief to the war as well. They represent the will and determination to solve waht the diplomatcy has failed. Now, using robots... this is just crazy. If you don't want casualty, don't wage wars. Fuck robots.

Seriously, god forbid any of that money makes its way into the shitty public education system. Something isn't right when a dumbass like me that just sleeps and reads books during school has a 3.5.

Yeah I've never completely understood that ABCDEF system you guys have. It's funny though cause when I'm watching Fairly Odd Parents on Nickelodeon it's translated into Dutch (pretty good actually sometimes even funnier than the original English) and you see his teacher handing him an F and in Dutch he says :"HAHA You got a 1"

Well it's terribly inaccurate. In NL the range is from 1 to 10 in steps of 0,1 . So you can have a 6,7 or a 3,8 or a 7,3. That's much more accurate than a A+ or a B-. I understand your system I just don't get why you use it.

So throughout the year they give you As and Bs and Cs but at the end of the year your grade is a number instead of a letter? That's odd.

It seems complicated as soon as I think to start explaining it, but it makes perfect sense if you went through school on the system

A = 4. B = 3. C = 2. D = 1. F = 0.

Taking an "honors" or "AP" course (AP basically means it's a college level class) gives you an extra point, too, so people can end up with 4.6 or 4.8 sometimes.

I'm guessing they used the letters before the numbers, then just created a number system to match the letters. An "A" still means the same as a "4" (or "5" in AP), but it just sounds nicer.

Wow all that could be so much easier if you would just use the 1 to 10 range. I'm not bashing the US system here though. I just think this is more complicated than a standard 1 - 10 system.

Why the fuck does every single topic I create go completely off topic and never end up back where it started. I don't think I'll bother anymore, seems kinda pointless. Then again actually being a member of this forum was pointless to begin with.:p

Robot soldiers.. you either had some bad shrooms and was talking to a Terminator or you are simply going crazy. Hey sure the Cylons were created by man, and sure they have a plan.. but that's not reality.. snap out of it.

Well not to brag or anything but recently our foremost science college (TU Delft) created a walking robot without any wires or a huge backpack like the Sony-bot has. It's quite a leap forward. The funny thing is that an actual WALKING robot is so damn hard to make because walking is so damn difficult. We all take it for granted but it's one hell of a complex operation for our brain.

O and those damn squirrels are the reason this country is going to hell. Damn them

I don't think they've actually got these robots the papers are all talking about up and running and mass produced just yet, I think they've made one of which was a huge breakthrough in the technology and as usual the media has blown it out of proportion.

Proper fully articulate walking androids are around 20 to 30 years off (at least I'll see them in my lifetime, unless I get killed before then).

Man I want my own terminator now!

It'll be like when automobiles first started out, at first there were only a couple and they were really expensive, ugly, less efficient than the previous form of transportation but then they gradually got better and cheaper and more 'fassionable' until everyone had one.

Similar situation will be the course of robots, the physical technology, the AI and other related aspects will all need to gradually evolve until they become 'the mobile phone of tomorrow' so to speak.

Man I am really trying to sell all this crap, maybe if people weren't so lazy and terrorists would just go fuck themselves instead of bombing everything we wouldn't need androids that can walk, talk and operate weapons.

Oh, don't worry - most people around here don't get it either. The 4 point system is pretty standard (A=4, B=3, et cetera) and the honors and AP courses are also, likewise, standard bumps (In Honors classes, A=4.5, B=3.5; and as mentioned in AP A=5, B=4, and so forth); but that's your final marks. Grades are still calculated in percentages during the semester, and those are chaotic as all hells. When I went to school, 95%+ was an A, 90+ was a B+, 85+ was a B, 80+ was a C+, 75+was a C, 70+was a D, and anything lower than 70 was F. Now, in alot of public schools, 90+ is an A, 80+ is a B, 70+ is a C, 60+ is a D, and lower than a 60 is an F (Or E - since it's not politically correct to call a kid a 'failure' these days, at least in distrcits around here)
And that's not all. I know that some schools had A's as 93%+; and I don't even want to think about the math of how they calcuated the other grades.

However, the end result was they still took the _letter_ grade, based on the percentage, to calculate the 4 point scale; so me with my hardass Catholic education needed a 95% or higher to make a 4.0, while someone going to public school (which by itself had easier classes) needed only a final grade of 90%+.

It's all different shades of screwed up; especially now with the crap they're trying to pull with the No Child Left Behind act. But that's a different rant.
