Man the boss battles in Lost Planet were annoying. RAY, is there an actual single player improvement/change worth mentioning in EC? All I heard of is the talk about the improved multiplayer mode.

I already have it for 360 but I couldn't resist. Its such a good game and I am weak for sum time tampering.

Boss battles are typical pattern and reflex based Japanese bosses. Annoying at first but easy (and time consuming) once you've memorized the pattern. And yes, only multiplayer improvements. Single player is the same "Adventures of Mr. Stumbly Bumbly" as it always was.

Nice looking game, though. And I'm having a little fun with it considering I don't have much else to play at the moment.

Now that I have another 360 I might pick up two copies of Shadowrun to play with friends they come over. I have enough 48 hour cards by now, I figure.

So how is that Zeno Clash game? It's a fighting game? Looks beautiful, anyway.

Yeah, it's a beat em' up with a surprising amount of depth to the combat system. I was expecting it to be something where I could just spam uppercut and do alright, but there's a lot of blocking, dodging, timing shit. So I suck a fair amount of ass at it because I've got the reflexes of an 80 year old woman. There's also more gunplay than their appears to be from gameplay footage.

Hands down the best 15 bucks I've probably ever spent on a game. I'm really hoping it sells well enough for them to maybe bring it to consoles and give them a good base starting whatever they've got planned next.

It's horrible and it has way too much tedious scripted shit. It doesn't even work that well because the voice acting is pretty lousy. It's an interesting universe but definitely very fucking flawed and not at all worth the time. Gameplay is pretty much shit.

It just needed more space marines and celebrity voice actors.

Sounds like you had aboslutely no idea what the game was before going into it. Gameplay is great if you were looking for a fisticuffs lawlfest with a crossbow that shoots skulls. Did you expect HL2 with zany visuals or something?

No. The melee combat is a lot of fun. The problem is that there isn't enough of it. You have to wade through a lot of boring crap to actually get to it. The story mode is horrible, I don't see how anybody can enjoy it.

There's an entire game mode dedicated just to punching the shit out of waves of enemies, dudepants.

I guess I can kind of understand the amount of dead you must be on the inside. But all kidding aside, I think it resonates so well with me because it reminds me of alot of the stuff I grew up with, Labyrinth, Dark Crystal, etc. It's also visually stimulating to the point I could just walk around and look at shit and be pretty happy.

It's unfortunate you didn't enjoy it, but anyone considering buying it, I'd urge you to check out some of the reviews for it, there's a bunch here: http://forums.steampowered.com/forums/showthread.php?t=843946

Great puzzle-based gameplay. I highly recommend that anybody who owns UT3 check it out. There are currently three levels available and I believe a new version is due out on the 7th of this month.

I hope the modding tools that were released friday for L4D encourage more modders to make maps/campaigns, user maps have been released too slowly so far... :P

It's Clear Sky, so no mods used. But there's a pretty substantial visual update mod you can check out here (http://artistpavel.blogspot.com/2009/04/stalker-complete-2009.html).

I haven't used it myself, but I've read a lot of good stuff about it.

I paid 17$ for it on Steam during the Christmas sale. Tages prevented me from playing for a good week and a half as their fucking auth servers were down and no one was at the office or some bullshit. However, if you're a fan of digital distribution, they've since removed TAGES from the Steam version, it's a good buy.

Yeah, the mechanics are pretty shit. The fighting is shallow and the structure can't possibly get more basic. And for a sandbox game it's pretty restrictive. And Altair is a whiny tedious bitch. But it was still enjoyable enough to finish and play reasonably thoroughly on the 360. And re-buy for the PC and play again. Obviously not for you though.

Some thoughts on STALKER Rebalanced 1.05:

Install the 1.05.03 hotfix.
You'll love the sleeping bag. Just watch where you crash...
The nitrous-oxide dogs aren't the only change in the Cordon. Don't get lulled into a false sense of security.
Sidorovich finally has some fire-power for sale; if you know the usual tricks for some fast cash, you can go into the "rescue Nimble" mission pretty well packed.
It seems to rain every day 'round 10:00am. (It's not quite a bug.) Deal with it and plan accordingly.
Hint: Meds and food are initially scarce at the Garbage and especially so at Agroprom. Buy, trade or kill for plenty of both before travelling to the Research Center for the first time. (I starved to death on my first time through.)

If you really want to curse me, since you already played SoC before, you may want to consider the Oblivian Lost 2.2 instead of the STALKER Rebalanced jammie:

Driveable vehicles. (But, stay ready to bail.)
Moving/changing anomalies. (Hey now!)
No "head-count" indication on your PDA. ("Oops! Excuse me, just passin' through. No need for trouble. I'll just be leavin' now...")
Mutants with attitude. (Always a crowd-pleaser.)
Various other embellishments.

Nubs? Hardcore mode, (especially free for all) is a great "I am a fucking special forces ghost" simulator – better than even Operation Flashpoint. Crouching around corners waiting to hear footsteps... ah, that feeling of finally hearing some is beautiful. The kills are so satisfying because it's not at all about reflexes, but rather about shooting the other guys without them seeing or expecting you. Flanking snipers without them knowing you're even coming never gets old (but fuck claymores). If you've ever played The Ship this is basically the same thing, except faster and less subtle, and you don't have to urinate or eat. It's not much fun on 50-man servers, though. You can't hear footsteps because of the never ending sound of twenty guns simultaneously firing.

Good gameplay, not great but good. PhysX doesnt do much except killing fps even on pretty good rigs, but it's still playable on mine with physx all maxed at 4x AA. Tha game hates ATi's though (no AA support for them o.0)

Pretty awesome game. I played for an hour on a good server before they started running custom maps where the trader's arrow points to a closed door, or where there's an invisible wall separating the fuckers from reaching us. Other than the custom maps it's perfect glorious violence, especially with the right music.

They're hacks. It's not a sim racer, it's a boring and flashy arcade racer with fidgety handling. The handling is so boring. DiRT is arcade but it's still a lot of fun. There's more excitement to be had in an actual simulation that I really don't get the appeal of arcade racers with motion blur and breathing sounds that simulate the simulation environment.

Well, I guess I was a bit hasty. It's actually a fantastic arcade racer. Great cars, great tracks.

Have fun with your game. Just remember that if you can drive a race car in a simulation you're practically a race driver in real life. I can powerslide in real life now and only spin out half the time (and I only crashed once)!

I would hope that most people aren't delusional enough to think of any game in the NFS series or GRID as simulations. It is indeed a racing game, not a racing simulation. Definitely an important distinction, but it shouldn't be used to push all games from the former category into a shitpile just because they aren't entirely realistic (or realistic at all in some cases).

I can enjoy San Francisco Rush 2049, NFS or Wipeout just as much as I can enjoy GTR 2, rFactor or whatever else. Entirely separate experiences sharing a similar core activity which are fun in their own ways.

I know not everyone is interested in repeatedly practicing their line, perfecting their braking and acceleration points, keeping tire wear and fuel use in mind, tuning the car before the race, and so on, but without that you're just beating the game instead of actually racing.

Sim racing is exciting because it's the only genre where you're not fighting the game's rules and quirks. You win if you focus on what you're doing and improve your own natural skills. If I improve in LFS, I improve in Simbin's games, and I improve in Forza Motorsport. It's the same skill. If you fuck up it's not because you're not accustomed to the game's own idea of physics, but because you did something wrong. I often slam into the inside walls in Dirt because there's so much grip that turning the wheel and braking naturally causes me to slam into them. And I think it would so much more rewarding if it was a simulation like Richard Burns Rally, and I could do a nice Scandinavian flick into the corner, and if I do it perfectly I'll shave 200 ms off my time, and if I mess up I'll end up in the bushes and drop down to 5th place.

There's also no attachment to the cars in arcade racers. In sims you spend so much time learning the car and getting used to its own quirks, which is a pretty big deal if cars are a big interest. I mean, just writing this makes me want to fire up GTR2 and do a few laps in a GT3 RSR around Spa.

I don't know how often you play sim racers, but it's definitely a one-or-the-other situation for me. I don't think arcade racing is actually inferior like a free to play Chinese shooter is to UT – I know a lot of talent goes into making a game like Shift. I just don't find them as much fun because they're like a sandwich with half the ingredients thrown out.

I consider a simulation exactly what it sets out to be: it's something that tries as hard as it can to simulate reality. I consider an arcade racer a video game just as Mario or Sonic are video games. The fun isn't in how real or fake they are, the fun is in the gameplay. In an arcade racer whether you're experiencing a very casual "simulation" of a real vehicle or speeding down the streets of a futuristic city shooting lasers doesn't really matter, it's more about whatever nuances it brings to the table gameplay-wise and how well it pulls them off. I don't jump into GTR2 expecting to pick up a machine gun powerup or go through a loop-de-loop, and I don't play F-ZeroGX expecting to drive around the Nürburgring.

It's the same with realistic shooters versus unrealistic ones; you play them for entirely different reasons. If you want an experience as close to life as you can get you go for a realism-focused military sim like ArmA 2 and the like. An unrealistic shooter allows you to do things that people either normally don't do or simply cannot do and feeds more off adrenalin and reflexes than it does tactics and strategy and allows you to jump into a crazy balls-to-the-wall explosionfest involving jump pads and unrealistically bulky people carrying absurdly large weapons.

The challenging aspects of the games and whatever sense of accomplishment you get come from different mindsets and I don't think they're really directly comparable. Some people only enjoy one or the other and some people can enjoy both for what they have to offer within their own genres.

Burnout's gameplay IS crashing. The race is just filler. Or at least it was until they removed crash mode...

This. Although I wouldn't say GRID or SHIFT blur the line that much because most of their realism comes from trying to put you IN the action, not make it a realistic experience.

I enjoy UT3 as a game. Not the best in the series, but not bad. People tend to hate on it more than it deserves.

Renegade-X is good, but it's very much an early beta release. If you're not comfortable with bugs, missing artwork or audio and an incomplete selection of maps and characters I wouldn't recommend checking it out. Wait for it to get a few releases if that sort of stuff would bother you. The mod as a lot of potential.

Because they pretty much made a terrific game and topped it off by coming up with the most unoriginal boss fights imaginable. Every one is either taken from another game, such as the Ivy-Contra one or the Bain-"wait for boss to charge, dodge boss, boss runs into wall, hit boss" fight that the game throws at you about 25 times. The Killer Croc fight is horribly repetitive, and the final boss is so incredibly awful I won't even mention it so everyone has to go do it themselves.

Borderlands is AWESOME. As a former Diablo II player the loot and wandering aspects are a welcome return. Its a bit simple, its pretty straightforward, and a tad difficult even with 4 people, but its just so much fun to play. Theres nothing particularly outstanding about it, but you just cant stop playing.

Yar, got Torchlight. Seems like one of those simple yet very addictive games. Agreed, music is very Diablo-esque.

Borderlands seems fun but Claptrap is now staring blankly at a door that I assume I am supposed to go through, but cannot. I assume this is a bug.

The game types are standard team deathmatch and capture point stuff, but the Descent-like movement changes things up a bit and makes it feel more fresh. The movement also allows for some neat map designs that you couldn't do in a shooter that keeps you on the ground. There's one weapon model with two firing modes (assault and sniper) that also fires three types of grenades (concussion, ice, and EMP). The controls for the movement are pretty solid. WASD give you left/right/forward/backward thrust on your jetpack, shift gives you downward thrust and space gives you upwards thrust. If you press F while looking at a surface your magnetic/gravity/magic boots tether you to the surface so you can walk (you can also tether by holding shift down until you hit a surface with your feet).

There's a stealth mode that you can enter which disables your suits primary functions in order to take you off the enemy radar and stops you from producing light that can easily give away your position. However, while in stealth mode you have limited movement capability and can't hear any audio except for your own breathing and the muffled sounds of your gun firing and things hitting your suit. When you're not in stealth mode you have full sound as your suit "simulates" audio.

The single weapon model and currently limited map selection may bother some people but I don't really take issue with it. Map packs are coming, which is good. I don't really care if they never add another weapon to the game, though. I mean, you're floating around in space in a space suit. If you were in such a situation I doubt you'd have a varied arsenal with you. One versatile and well designed weapon would be enough.

I've played nearly 7-hours of it so far today and I've enjoyed it a lot. Personally, I think it's worth the price.

The game types are standard team deathmatch and capture point stuff, but the Descent-like movement changes things up a bit and makes it feel more fresh.

Are you a Descent veteran, RAY? That game will always be very prominent on my "greatest games that nobody played" list... We used to have people stay after hours at work three times a week and play on the company LAN on our hot, sexy 16Mb '486 DX4-100s. Half didn't even have audio cards. One guy in accounting used to consistently blow lunch after watching over someone's shoulder; the crazy thing is that he couldn't keep away. He would get nauseous on a Monday and be back for more Wednesday. And, again Friday. We'd go out for beer and pizza afterwards, and he'd be left scrubbing the carpet. Dear God, I loved those games, all three of them. Descent 3 was so overlooked and under-appreciated.

I was checking out the Shattered Horizons jammie a week or so ago. I know it's heresy to some to say this, but I think the DX10-only requirement is a drag. Are the graphics so special that DX9 would be such a step back? Is it really twitchy? (I suppose something like a 300+ms ping would translate into being strictly "target dummy" status.)

I've never beaten any of the Descent games but I have played them at various points in the past. I'll probably grab them off GOG some day.

There probably isn't anything in the game that couldn't have been achieved with equal or close to equal results using DX9. I think the primary motivation behind being DX10-only is that it saved them money on having to develop a rendering system from scratch. Instead, they just modified the renderer that powers 3DMark Vantage. It'd also be cheaper for them to support a game with one rendering path than with two or more. They shouldn't have been so stubborn and just coded a DX9 path, even a if they had to gimp it to minimize development time spent on it. Being DX10-only has alienated a lot of people. That, combined with the lack of maps as resulted in disappointing sales which in turn has lead to a couple of employees getting let go.

There's a map pack in the works to help fill out the maplist. I'm hoping that will draw some people back, but the damage may have been done. Player count right now generally ranges between 30 and 60 depending on the time of day. Enough people to find a game when you want to play, but not exactly brimming with activity. The shooting isn't super twitchy, but there are times when it gets that way. Mostly only with larger player counts, though. With ~16 players in the game there is a lot of sneaking around, anchoring to surfaces and firing from a distance rather than out-in-out action. It can be fairly tense at times.

Wow, is that a graphics mod? I don't remember the game looking that sharp or having that many effects when I played through it! Holy crap! It's amazing what the mod communities can do nowadays, it really, really is.

I disagree :) it's adds a nice color correction, it may be a bit too blurry for some but overall i find it much better (and it can be customized as well).

I like how it gets rid of the weird CSI tint, and the AO is wonky as ever so missing that isn't a huge problem...

Yeah the matchmaking is pretty bad, luckily the full game will have dedicated servers.

Really not sure I'll buy it though, was pretty unimpressed with the game. Seems like something that could've been released 3 or 4 years ago.

Played the AvP demo on XBL. It's got some real interesting mechanics - Aliens can walk on every surface, Predator has thermal vision and alien vision? Marines are... marines. I kicked ass as a predator though.

The first Bioshock didn't support AA so I haven't tested it yet...
As far as Mass Effect, it didn't take my MSAA or SSAA so I gave up. The new 10.1 catalyst may be the problem because I can't get any game to take the AA thru the control center...

The beta doesn't have an NDA. Blizzard has stated that users should feel free to post screenshots and other information.

Ok, so the 1.5 inch bezel in the middle is a huge issue at the moment that makes actually playing impossible and can't be solved because bezel management is disabled even though the two monitors are almost identical. They're both 1920x1080 @ 60 hz, but they have slightly different EDID values for viewable area, so the Catalyst team thought it would be a good idea to disable bezel management under such conditions… But it's the idea that counts! Right now the GPU thinks the bezel doesn't exist, so it renders the area where a screen would be if it weren't for the bezels. Imagine a black strip running down the center of these screenshots, and that's what I see in real life (aiming at shit is hard when you can't see it).

God, look at all those pixels. In a perfect world monitors wouldn't have bezels, and this would be compatible (http://support.amd.com/us/eyefinity/Pages/eyefinity-software.aspx) with more than a handful of games. I think we're pretty close to a perfect world, considering those are the only two issues. Fuck, so many pixels. Bonerrr.

(And yeah, AC2 is fucking ugly.)
