OMG, Oblivion gets 0wned, too!!!
I wonder how well a game can run with a forest of those kind of trees, though. This demonstrate the engine capabilty but we have yet to see this thing in motion.

Oblivion uses the same tree rendering system as Unreal 3. It's called SpeedTree.

It sure looks nice. Well the trees do any way. It would look a whole lot better if they had grass sticking out of the ground.

It will probably look even better when the game reaches at least alpha or beta

Definately improving but they still don't really look like real trees.

Trees are all great .Yeah, a bit of grass and foliage on ground would be nice. Also a water body which shows some reflection detail.
Only then, I will compare it to FarCry.

Yeah, they're very angular and not organic looking enough to be convincing.

I'de say we're still a good few years off from having games looking 'real'.
I watched the Matrix again recently and thought about how if The Matrix is a program then to some extent its what a video game would be at the point were the line between real and virtual are blurred.
Maybe around 2020 - 30 we'll be in an age of video games like that, heh heh... its good to dream.

the trees look wonderful, but they still have trouble incorporating them with the rest of the enviroment. the ground is missing realistic foliage and it looks like the older version of the unreal engine. i hope they bring it atleast to par with the rest of the U3 technology. the new morrowind game really did a nice job with nature.

hmm lookin back on the older games, then i must say i really like the nature in Deadly dozen 2 and Los: Vietnam.

The thing that makes me sad is this engine is probably gonna be wasted on crappy unreal games.

Go eat Richard Simmons ass. Unreal games and the Unreal universe rocks...well, not Unreal 2, but everything else is great.
And no, it won't just be used on Unreal games. The Unreal Engine is one of the most licensed engines out there.

I downloaded all of those tree demos, cool as hell but I still think where the branches on the trees meet the trunks need to be more 'meshed' together so they don't look so flat. Alot of foliage in such a small enviroment makes for some impressive scenery. I kept thinking what would an fps be like in this place, man there are some good possibilities with that software.

What about Far Cry? I think it's a wonderful looking game. Same with Half-Life 2. But IMHO so is Doom 3. I couldn't declare one of the three better looking than the others. However, I will say that Half-Life 2 not having dynamic lighting and shadows was a rather poor decision IMHO.

Whoa buddy. Chill.
I was just agreeing with you. HL2 and D3 were both hyped, yet Far Cry came out of no-where and looked great, as you said.

To me, they're just different.
FarCry - Outdoors awesomeness.
Doom III - Lighting awesomeness.
HL2 - Realism awesomeness.

Yeah I kinda prefer FarCry's fresh outdoors to Doom's lighting or HL 2's realism. But then again thats just me.

Doom 3 has the best lighting and shading in my opinion but the textures and poly count are crap. I really don't see what everyone else sees in Far Cry, I think UT2004 has better visuals.
Heres some screens of the speed tree software featuring a mech in the scene:

Despite the meshes not being perfect the overall look of these scenes are just cool.

I really like HL 2's realism and physics and everything, but Far Cry is just much more gorgeous.

They've got a timber wolf in there, those are my favorite mechs of all time.
