View Full Version : Advanced next gen physics

What are some things you would like to see next gen physics to be able to do? I know it’s a long shot but I would really love to see advanced liquid physics. Imagine splashing in water, the water that splashes actually can hit the wall or ground and act how liquid acts in the real world. Either drip off the wall, or create a puddle on the ground that can be interacted with. Even better, just imagine what kind of blood effects these liquid physics could create. Example: Slice someone in half and realistic looking blood pours out of their body splashing the ground and staying on the ground acting like actual liquid and not just some blood texture pasted on top of the original map texture. Somehow I don't even think next gen engines will be able to handle that, maybe the engines after next will. What about you guys? What would you like to see in next gen games?

I'd like to see them not be such a big part of games, they should really focus on making games not suck before worrying about shit like physics. I don't care that I can cut off someones head and kick it at a cat, I want a good game.

hail hail to the words of future man. i totally agree with him, if theyd put as much time into the game itself than into developin physics, then wed have a bunch o games that we would play more than once.

Get yourself World of Warcraft. Noone gives a shit about it's physics, although the boob physics are beautiful....It's just a great game.

I agree that too many games focus on visuals and levels of realisim these days rather than my god a story or a decent plot line, some well written dialogue and even no I can't say it... characters with depth.
I personally would love to see say, a body fall down a flight of stairs, smash through a window and hit the pavement and splatter all realistically but then it doesn't really matter now does it?

I just used the wallhack when I got to the prison Lockdown map. By that time I was bored with the game.

back to the question at hand... I would love to see a better ability to realisticly manuver in the game environment. I hate it when I need to get somewhere and I can see a window I could easily reach if I had arms but I can't use them cause I'm too busy with my gun! If I can reach it just let me do it and pull myself up. I don't need Tomb Raider, but I could use a bit more interaction. Also if I shoot a tree with a rocket launcher it would be nice to have it splinter and fall on some guys and crush em! If something can be blown up, it should be...

I think the developers need to focus on what the player can do with their in-game hands and feets. And by hands, I mean fingers. If a game can provide a series of interaction similar to the real-life fingers, it would be a load of fun and open a new range of gameplay possiblities.

so you would have the chance to finger dead females?

I prefer live ones thanks.
Fully interactive and destructible environment with complex damage/destruction models. Also realistically manipulate stuff.
And on fighting, how about intergrating fighting game systems like Tekken where you need to block attacks (and they're realistically blocked instead of seeing two ppl hit at each other endlessly and *just happened to miss/get blocked* even tho the hits clearly connected.

Improving physics is good but when they go overboard with graphics we usually end up with a crappy game.

Devestation is a pretty good example. Rather than going overboard, however, it just never got it right.

Half-Life 2, in my opinion, shouldhave had all of that.

The capabillity should definately be there. I see things along the lines of maybe picking up a charred piece of wood and getting burnt soot stuff on your in-game fingers. If you get in water after that it should be able to wash off.

Good story and gameplay of course is a must, but I still want the gushing-ness of blood splattering goodness. Sheding blood is all good and fun. But, I guess if the gameplay isn't done right it won't be all that much fun.

cool blood splatters and shiny water wont make up for a crappy ass story.
most of the best games out there did not have great effects, and you wont want to play a game (in the long run) just to see blood and water. graphics only serve to make a game better, but story and plot actually make the game.

Atomsphere is very important, and probably the most important aspect to me. It's the atmosphere that really gets me into the game.

Yeah I'm tired of not being able to knock down a wooden door with a rocket launcher.

I'm sure glad I'm not the only one! The thing about gameplay vs. phisics is that I don't see these conflicting. Game developers know they need gameplay that dosen't suck (we could hope) but don't more realistic (or surrealistic :) environments make the games more fun?
For example: you guys probably played some of the first Pirates! and maybe checked out the new one. The gameplay is first rate with good controls and lots to do, open-ended adventuring and all that. The environment varies tho, from decent ship battles to real cheesey fencing. The overall experience is great but would a more dedicated effort to the phyisics make it better...for sure!
Then consider Farcry. Same gameplay we've done before, with some minor tweaks here and there. The engine and phyisics-awesome. As far as a shooter goes this is one of the first single-player games that keeps my interest (usually I skip to the frag-fest.) Mainly the smarter AI and better maps make this a hit.
In the end we probably all agree that gameplay is king, considering the amount of fun we had with "combat" and "pitfall" but an attention to the phisics and detail can really improve a game and make it that much more fun...why shouldn't we have both?

Yeah Far Cry sucked ass story and gameplay wise but it was so huge just because of its graphics. Everyone loved it just because it looked so nice. Sadly I think many next gen games will follow the dark path of Far Cry.

Ever heard of Trespasser? No, they shouldn't do that, ever again.

I sometimes try to imagine how different our society would be if that game never existed. I think I'd be a pro-life christian with three kids driving a minivan. The world trade center would still be standing. Jean Bennett Ramsey would be on the cover of Seventeen magazine by now.
jesus christ...I tried to make that funny but I think it failed.

I agree that game developers should focus more in creating a better story. And about game physics, I would love if the could create really gore. Like when you shoot a bad guy with shotgun in the face, his face blows up like in real life and brain matter splatters everywhere .same goes for body parts .That would be dam cool,……..of course parents and the government wouldn’t allow it.

I pretty much don’t know what to wish for exactly since everything I would think of concerning physics is either already implemented or will be shortly in the upcoming projects...

I concur. I dont care if a game has a plot as thin as Serious Sam, if I could play a game with that kinda gore then I wouldn't need another game the rest of my life.
