This question is pretty much needless for me for I'm an Asian. In Asia, EVERYONE likes anime because we think American cartoons are too childish, American comics are always about superheros, Comics like Heavy Metal magazine never had enough money to open an Asian market, and American humor like the Simpsons was never approciate in Asis, either...

So anime was basically all we have. Don't think it's bad, because there are just so many different titles for us to watch, read, and collect their merchandise... They were great and I'm pretty good at drawing them, too. In fact, I might be one of the top penciler if you make an comparision... sounds cocky but it is true.

The reason anime is so successfully in Asia is because everyone has his or her (and almost 70% of anime artists are actually girls!) chance to become an admired artist. In America, when something became popular, people only know which company published them, but it is very different in Asia. Japanese put the lead artist's name in very big font, sort of making his/her name into a brand, and sell the menga. If the menga became very popular, they will hire a team and make it into an anime film or TV series. Lead artist basically do all the pencil and ink work at the very beginning, then just sit there and put a great deal of money into his pocket and relax...

A lot of people want to be like that, so there are a lot of competitions, and a lot of works. There has never been any shit like being manufactured like super heros. In order to be successful, all the artist put into their very best effor to come up with something unique and good. Lucky Asians!

When things like pokemon came out, we all think it was such a shame because it has no story. Thins like that usually exist only as a brand, never an animation. We all knew the thing is gonna be popular in America and it turned out we were right. Americans like manufactured goods, and the less variety the better.

Ghost in the Shell and Princess Mononoke are two great films. Too bad only 30% of men are artists ... bit unequal I guess. :D

lol, dude no shit against asians but you can't say americans are the only materialistic society out there who would buy anything with a logo on it, asians are some of the most maniacal shoppers on earth. Take the Hello Kitty craze in Asia hello kity info (Rotten style) (http://www.rotten.com/library/culture/hello-kitty/) it is freaking out of hand. I agree we Americans (The majority) are prone to buying what our kids ask for, from some shit they saw on tv to anything else they ask for but we aren't the only ones. You tell me when you hear of a goddamned stampede over a fucking cat doll and then we'll talk.

That's true. But Hello Kitty remains as a brand and their cartoon was completely trashed by all the mature-minded Asians. Saying American do that might be a generalization because there are many people here I know have great taste too...

My favorite one is called Black Jack. The original menga is a series of more than 1500 stories while only less then 10 anime was produced because Japanese liked the menga better and refused to accept the snime series... but they are still good.

The anime with the best story is called "The Silent Fleet." It wasn't very popular among the kids because it deals with some politics even the adults debates to each other. Again, like all successful anime, it was base on a menga series first. Only the menga series has the complete story, too...

The story is about how Japanese military were developing nuclear weapons in secrecy. One day, though, a captain of a Japanese nuclear submarine stole the submarine and the crew, with 20 nuclear warhead onboard, and declared their "independence"... He tried to wake the world from the arms race that would eventually destroy us all by threatening all the nations around the world to abandon the nuclear weapons, or he will launch the nukes he has in his hand...

All the world powers jumped on him, sending out many ships to get him. Thus began the story... how a Japanese submarine with an extremely smart captain single-handed all the fleet around the world... sounds bull shit, huh? You wont say so when you see the thing! The tactics are absolutely cunning and the diplomatic strategies are even more breath-holding then the actual naval combats!

Well, here is the spoiler for you guys sice I don't think any of you guys would have a chance to read this great sereis... at the end, American won. The Japanese captain was assassinated on his way out of the UN building, and without the caption, the submarine was fucked by a air-to-sea torpedo... (sigh)

One i also like is Hellsing...yes it is action..but sometimes you just need a good action anime.......I also love the Ghost in the Shell series...the movie, the series..hell i even liked the game for the ps1.......i cant wait for the next movie INNOCENCE to come out.....lets see.....umm........Z.O.E. Dolores i was interesting.............Vampire hunter D, both moves were good.......and many others which i would have to remember later...

Aeon Flux? Does that count? I've got two or three cassettes of that around here, (if my nephew didn't steal them), that I thought were pretty cool. I have a hard time following the story in most anime; I don't think I'm that dense, it's just that something gets lost in the translation. Even playing Shogo, there were a couple of times where I said, "What the hell are they talking about?", but then I figured Monolith did that on purpose just to make it feel, well, ..."oriental". (I don't mean anything offensive by that.)

I also love Princess Mononoke and the other one by the same guy Spirited Away. It got an academy award or something.

I noticed most of you guys are posting series, so lets get some movies in here.

I also liked the two Vampire Hunter d movies. The story was a little weak in the new one, but the way the did the action was better than anything in my opinion. Ninja Scroll is great. and a couple others I can't remember right now.

BTW, for good prices on (sometimes bootlegged) anime, head over to Discountanimedvd (http://www.discountanimedvd.com). I bought the entire set of marmalade boy from there for $109! Granted, it's a taiwanese bootleg, but it's a really great taiwanese bootleg! :D

Is that the one that has all the big worms change their color from blue to red and started to attack the Valley of the Wind as soon as the wind dies down, almost at the end of the movies, and the girl came in saved everyone and fulfilled the prophecy? That was was great but the story was a bit of cliche.

I especially liked the scene when the man-made moster was melting away after fired a few shots, fucked up a pile of worms, then collapsed because the production was rushed... hehehe...

Magical Fruit
April 18th, 2003, 08:24 AM
Yeah Nausicaa is something like that. I thought that it had a pretty great story. It was a post apocalyptic world where there are these spores that come and poison the air where you live. Of course where the spores come there are also huge insects so it makes it interesting. It had some great stuff in it. It is also pretty old as far as anime goes as well.

So far everyone has mostly mentioned action oriented anime, and most of the recommendations are great. I gotta say that I have not seen many thrillers or psychological themed ones mentioned here. The first time I saw "Perfect Blue", I was blown away and had to see it a second time and again. I can only compare it to Cape Fear with a fucked up twist at the end. My other recommendation has to be "Serial Experiments Lain" which is another great psychological mind-bender.

Is Appleseed a good anime or is it gay-nime? I got Ghost in a Shell, Full Metal Alchemist, Hellsing, Bleach (sp?) and some other shit at office. Which one's are worth watching?

Btw is Advent Children considered anime?

Downfall

Advent Children:Last Order is anime, the movie is CGI.

there are 2 Appleseed movies. one old school one that i havnt seen that is anime and a newer one that is cgi that I have seen which has a good plot and lots of interesting visuals.

and all of those you lsited that you got at your office are good. FMA might get a bit slow in the middle but it picks back up.

Bleach is my current favorite anime to keep up with.

Is Cowboy Bebop any good?

Downfall
June 21st, 2006, 01:36 PM
yup, and is one of those series that you dont have to watch in order to understand most of it.

if you end up liking cowboy bebop you would probably also like Outlaw Star.

the movie they made of it was prety much just an extended episode that can fit anywhere in the plotline in my opinion

Hell yes, the best motherfucking ending of all times.

And the movie was pretty good in my opinion.

Now, seeing that you commented about Outlaw Star....is it as good as cowboy bebop? (Have in mind that i loved the ending of cowboy so much that i have The Real Folk blues in my ipod :D )

id say if cowboys bebop was a 10 out of 10 then outlaw star would be an 8 out of 10.

good action, weapons and character development.

Hopefully it's some good shit. $50 out of my pocket 'cause I'm too lazy to torrent it.

I just finished watching the Gun Grave series... I don't know if it's the cold i have right now or if it was just a well written ending. But i actually got choked up nearly to crying at the end. I'm serious by the way, aparently i'm more human than i thought.

i loved that series as well. I happened to like the begining part where everyone was human a lot more, but overall it was a great anime.

I'd like to watch Innocence (the sequel to the film), but it's only in Japanese.

Anyone know of a dubbed version?

Argh!

The package set I got off of Ebay was a bit misleading, dropping me with half of my shit in Japanese!

Both Innocence and 2ndGIG are in Japanese... and subtitles blow ass.

Looks like I'm forced to buy 1,000 volumes for second season and a dubbed version of Innocence.

Anyone want my Japanese shizzle for $25 shipped?

Then again, I may just 'acquire' them all and use the cases for them. Blargh!

I've been watching anime and reading manga for the last week and now I'm starting to crash. All I have left of anime is: 2 or 3 teen dramas (Fullmoon kind of seems interesting...), Negima (the manga is awesome, now I get to watch it), FMP: Second Raid (see below), Chobits, Gundam Seed Destiny (yea I'm not sure I want to watch this), and the rest of Burst Angel.

Comments so far:

Elfen Lied = awesome.

FMP: I want to punch Chidori in the face.

After watching and reading all of Azumanga for the 7th time, I'm convinced that this shares the spot as my most favorite anime/manga ever (GTO is greatness).

BA: Jo deserves to die for playing the godlike female character...so far...

Berserk: I can't find any episodes that go beyond the near rape episode.

Naruto: When the fuck is this "season" going to end? The creator or someone said that this season (the one right now) was going to be all filler. Never read the manga.

Bleach: This whole thing with Bounto is weird. Ishida sucks. Never read the manga.

The Anime only goes up to around Volume 13 of the Manga, if you want to continue the story you'll have to read the Manga from now on.

Indeed. I'm close to just abandoning the show if they don't stop with the fucking filler soon.

Bleach: This whole thing with Bounto is weird. Ishida sucks. Never read the manga.

I don't really care much for the Bounto arch, but at least it hasn't turned into Naruto...yet. Hopefully they get on with the main storyline after this, same for Naruto.

If you want something that will make your brain explode, watch Serial Experiments Lain.

Well I found out the answer to my Naruto question, what a bitch. I'll check out Lain as soon as I finish with some other acquisitions.

I forgot about one anime, anyone who hasn't seen FLCL a.k.a. Furi Kuri must watch at least the first episode...out of the 6.

Speaking of Samurai, Samurai Champloo came out pretty good with the hip-hop influence. Problem is there isn't much to the main part of the story.

For a good teen romance/drama, there's Suzuka. Cliched characters is the only real bring down.

Ranma 1/2 maybe old but still great anime. Curses, half-humans half-animals, and a guy that can change into a chick with just some cold water. This has everything.

The filler is still going strong. I'm praying that they get back onto the main story when they hit episode 200, else I will abandon the series...at least until I get word from people more masochistic than me that the filler has ended.

All the hardcore Naruto people are expecting it to end around episode 209, which without a delay would be November 1st for us and the sub release. I went ahead and went through some of the manga and found out that the first few (or last few before that date, don't know) episodes are going to seem like fillers, but noticeably different.
