View Full Version : Looking for good SP game...

I just finished Jedi Knight 2: Jedi Outcast and am currently doing Far Cry on realistic (Jack Carver dies nicely...). I'm kinda lookin' for a good SP game to fall back on if I get a little tire of Far Cry or once I finish it. I'm looking for either cheap titles, or for someone to recommend somethin' in my library.
These are titles that I own, and are considering playing through:
MoH:AA (and both x-packs), Postal², Unreal II, Red Faction, Clive Barker's Undying, Battlezone II, Black & White, Jagged Alliance 2 (and UB, but that's just unfunly hard), Neverwinter Nights, Abomination, Operation Flashpoint.
If any of these titles stick out as "Dude, you HAVE to play that one!", please let me know. If there are any cheap ($20 or lower, I'm poor) titles that have a good SP portion, let me know. If it's so phenominally great that it deserves my full $30 or up, let me know and I might consider it. Help is appreciated, thank you.

Aghem, lets see (going to pick some off the recent ones): Splinter Cell: Chaos Theory (really good, in my opinion better than the two previous ones combined), Half-Life 2 (no comments), Scrapland (for a couple of laughs and a good action), Trackmania Sunrise (haven’t bought it myself but judging from the demo its fully worth the money), Thief: Deadly Shadows (not really "recent" but by all means worth the time and money). What else, what else, well cant think of anything else right now so I will stop here I think. Oh and you should consider getting the expansions for Neverwinter, very enjoyable.

Cool thanks. Deadly Shadows looks (and from what I've played, is) good. I've beaten Half-Life², although I constantly go back just to play around. Chaos Theory I can wait for the price to come down (I don't want to, but I must), however that reminded me of something... There's a pack for I think $30 that contains the original and Pandora Tomorrow... I might look into that.

If you like Star Wars games, which you must if you played all the way through Jedi Outcast, Republic Commando is a must try.

No no, I like GOOD Star Wars games. I played the demo of Republic Commando and indeed, it was fun, but it seemed as though it would get repetitive. Please tell me this is not the case! It looks so good!

Well all I can say about that is it's a FPS. Every FPS on some level is repetitive. But it wasn't repetitive at all to me.
I just notice that you actually managed to pull yourself to finish Far Cry. Republic Commando will in no way seem repetitive to you my friend.

Actually I'm only on the 3rd level of Far Cry (I stupidly picked the hardest difficulty while still being a n00b), but I shall check out Republic Commando.

There haven't been many cool games lately. Definately get GRand theft auto 3, its really good. That's one of my favorite games of all time. Vice City is also pretty good.

Try Jedi Academy if you liked Outcast, although a little more limited (and the in-between mission interface plain sucks), its still damn cool playing with double/saberstaffs.

If you can tolerate repetitive combat system, similar quests, boring text-based conversations, and frequent crash-to-desktop syndrome, Morrowind is just the game you want. It has a huge map for free explorations, and the best part of the game is how you can decorate your house with every items you can find in the game. Don't forget to check out the mods, there are thousands of them out there.

Well no need to post after what Ray just put in here. I think every classic (that has atleast color graphics) is in there.
Allthough I can also recommend the Space Quest games, the Monkey Island series and the old Command & Conquer and Red Alert series. But that's me, I'm a classic kinda guy.

I forgot about the early C&C games, good stuff.
I haven't played the Space Quest series or the Monkey Island series, but I've been wanting to check it out. They're kind of hard to find, though.

Bittorrent is your friend. But you'll have to scavenge real hard. Usenet is also a nice place allthough you'll have to request classics like these I think.

Woooo... Classic gaming frenzy. I just got the entire Space Quest Collection, Zak McKracken, Maniac Mansion, Loom, The Secet of Monkey Island, Monkey Island 2 : LeChuck's Revenge, Indiana Jones & the Last Crusade, Indiana Jones & the Fate of Atlantis, Day of the Tentacle, and The Dig.
Since I already have Sam & Max Hit The Road, Full throttle, and Grim Fandango, all I really need is Monkey Island 3 & 4.

Seriously play through Deus Ex, the story is fucking amazing. System Shock 2 is really good too, really scary too. Those aren't games any true PC gamer should go without playing. You do have to be somewhat intelligent to play them though, and to fully understand the Deus Ex Story.

Pirates is a good game, but if you get it make sure you pick it up cheap because it gets repetive and boring pretty fast. Rome: Total War is a really good game but I never could stick with it long enough to finish a campaign. It just gets boring too.

Arg! I started to on hardest diff. (I'm one of those guys who takes it as hard as possible and then is done with it) and A.) I'm getting used to an Unreal powered game with realism and bounding boxes (kinda not easy...) and two, something's up with me mouse. I turned it down to 1 for sensitivity (I could do a 1080 by just moving it to the side 3 inches...) but on the menus it still feels lagged or something... Perhaps it's the 1200x900 res...

I highly recommend you run Deus Ex at 1024x768, at any resolution higher than that the HUD gets all giant and ugly.
Also, you should run with the updated OpenGL renderer (attached to this post), it's much faster than the Direct3D renderer.
Deus Ex + Updated OpenGL renderer + 1024x768 + AA + AF = Winnar.

I'm currently running DX with the OpenGL thing. I'm noticing less coruption but not much framerate improvement. Though I realise this was not the goal, what exactly are the gained benifits?
PS. Looking for a 3DFX wrapper for the excellent Myth series, anyone have a good one? The two I've found either corrupt the graphics ("What the fu-... PINK Thrall?") or look good but run at, oh, 2 FPS...

I should probably put them in my sig., but for now:
Windows XP (sans shitpack2)
1024MB RAM (don't know type, if it even matters)
Radeon 9600SE (Isn't this a cheap knock-off of the 9700?) 128MB RAM AGP
Audigy 2 (Ah... It's so... Beautiful)
Some Logitech 5.1 system costing around $50 but actually quite good
If you need other stats, lemme know so I can tell you.
EDIT: Just noticed you don't use AA. Good reason not to? Also didn't notice (was skimming) AF. Poo...
Edit deux: Found AF in the thing (DeusEx.ini) but I don't know what to edit, what value to set it, all that stuff. If you could perhaps give a few more pointers, I be much appriciative.
