View Full Version : The Guild Wars Thread

ok i just bought Guild Wars and thought there should be a big thread where we can shit out our ideas, opinions and strategies about the game. Then why not make a Guild? :) Anyway, discuss.

The first thing i have to say about this game is that so far ive really not played alot. I started with a ranger and found the gameplay pretty slow and boring (im too used to Diablo II i think), and this is why i want to make a new character (dunno which though, any suggestions?)

Rangers are cool, I am a warrior/necro. I really liked pre searing ascalon alot. Post searing is cool because of all the missions its just really.... destroyed.

You think Guild Wars is slow? For gods sake dont go anywhere near Ever Quest 2.

as i understand, there are absolutely no monthly fees you have to pay; just buy it and go.

what is the possiblity they might have to introduce a charge later on, when people have good characters they dont want to leave and are therefore forced to pay.

im interested in getting this game as it looks pretty interesting, but i dont ever want to pay the damn monthly fee.

NiteX

I guess not many people know this but, later on there will be "chapters" The chapters will have a fee. But they are NOT required to buy, you can still play the game without buying them. They do add on things though such as new weapons armor and spells and of course new quests. I'm not too sure how much the chapters will be but I'm sure it wont be to high of a price.

And as for combat check out these two videos I recorded with fraps. Hope they give you somewhat of a feel. But, watching a video is no where near what its really like.

What do you mean how will we meet in the game? We type in each others names and when you see the name in your friends list saying online whisper the person.

I just thought of a great idea, if we ever do form our own Guild I thought of a very good way in which we can all agree on a cape design we all like. Because the Guild I'm in right now has a rather boring cape. I have a few simple designs that interest me. If you guys want you can do the same and post what you think looks good and we can do a vote. Here are my two. I really like these colors and either one of these emblems. What do you guys think?

I haven't played GW yet because someone can't figure out how to do his job right and hasn't shipped my shit yet. WoW has the most fun quests from all the MMORPG's I've played (FFXI, SWG, AO). Some quests look like they were given a lot of thought. But the majority of the game's quests are "Kill 10 thingies" or "Bring back 5 thingies". It was a good MMORPG and I don't regret buying it but if you buy an MMORPG and expect to be playing it for a long time then WoW might not be for you unless you get addicted really easily. The PvP, I don't feel like talking about the PvP. Brings back too many bad days.

RADiator
May 5th, 2005, 04:27 PM
Played both WoW (since release) as well as GW (since it hit in EU).
Absolutely no difference in quest structure between these two games. Both have PvP capabilities as well as a broad array of PvE activity. It s a decision you will have to make on your own I’m afraid. The only thing I can say though is that WoW requires time, and an enormous amount of it. But the bottom line is those are both well designed and executed games both in areas of structure in general and execution. Not from the graphical stand point though, in that area there is even no competition, GuildWars is far more superior.
In any case I suggest you read up on the reviews, and make up your own opinion from facts rather than the rumors (hence what you "heard").

To the ppl playing, how many servers are there, and can you jump from one to another keeping your char status?

ps. does it get crowded/laggy at all? There are no servers, just districts. You can jump from one district to another easily. You can also port your character(s) from EU districts to US ones (what I did recently actually), and back. EU districts where highly crowded, but surprisingly almost never laggy (I ported because almost no one spoke English there btw :p ).
US districts are less crowded but there are always people to party up with (or trade/guild etc.) if you feel like it. Not laggy at all.

Well, most reviews I've seen of either game have been just terrible. WoW's bad reviews are either from people who just don't like MMORPGs, and the good reviews are from people that just seem addicted or Blizzard fanboys. GW's reviews the bad ones are either people who just don't like RPGs as a whole, or whiny EQ and WoW fanboys who don't consider it an MMORPG.

I think I'll just go get Sid Meier's Pirates or something, and get one later when it's cheaper. From what I've seen though GW does seem like it'd be more fun. Do either have any trials?

Digital Pimp
May 5th, 2005, 05:09 PM
GW did have the live beta events back a few months ago, but if you missed em you're SOL now, maybe they migh do another one on closed servers to try and get more people though that is highly unlikely.

NiteX
May 5th, 2005, 10:47 PM
Ahriman GW isn't a MMORPG that’s why the WoW fanboys don’t consider it a MMORPG. But, to tell you the truth, I much rather this Online RPG style than any MMORPG. The biggest reason is because the only time you see people talking is in town. When out of town no spam, its so great. The main reason I hate MMO games is because you always have others fucking with your kills or taking your items. Or such as the case in Lineage 2 which I hate with a passion, they PK you right on the spot for no reason. So in my eyes GW is not a MMO calling it a MMO is insulting it. Fuck MMO games those filthy pieces of shit.

Yes, you must have 2 classes. And a monk/necro probably wouldnt be the best mix. To tell you the truth I havent seen a single person with that combo. The monk has mainly healing spells and enhancements. The necro has mainly life stealing spells curses and hexs which are negitive buffs done to enemies. If you want you can try the two out though. Um the world itself, gfx wise is utterly breathtaking in some places (best place for me has been catacombs so far), a real Final Fantasy flare, just a real Jap RPG feel to alot of the world to the fantasy, don;t require you to group with ass monkeys, you can run in and out of towns and your game experience is in your own private version of the world. All the loot is assigned specifically so no rolling, if you need an item your friend gets you can trade it. All around a good Diablo game on a massive scale.

As for impressions of the game, I'm liking it a lot. It's about as impressive as World of Warcraft, and possibly a little more entertaining. I'd like a little more clothing customization - right now I'm a fire elementalist wearing purple pants with some weird floating head thing that clips into my hair. The fighting, as I suspected, is rather monotonous, but it's still a fun game none the less. The idea of an environment in which I can interact with others is rather appealing, so I guess that's where the addiciton comes from; that, and the game is graphically stunning. I think I'm spent for the night, but I'll be on tomorrow to whip it out.

I'm doing the Necro/Warrior thing - it's not so bad. The thing to remember about the multiclasses - for folks who don't have the game - is that your primary class defines your special ability and armor limits; as a Necro primary I'm limited on armor, but their special ability of regaining Energy when something dies really comes in useful. The Warrior half of the equasion gets the bonus weapon skill, but doesn't get the Warrior armor types or the armor-penetrating special ability.

There are some limits on the engine, though - the game plays alot like Dungeon Siege; there's no real jumping or falling off things, so some of the gameplay feels a bit... wooden. Also, I could like a bit more flexibilty in the types of equipment and, like someone said, the general character apperance. The class specific armor gear is an ok idea, but it should be in addition to general-type equipment, not the only option.

NiteX
May 11th, 2005, 12:11 PM
Wooden? I see what you're getting at but maybe the word stiff or limited would be better. The only way the world would seem limited to you is if you just got off of a very huge MMO such as WoW. Yes, GW doesn’t let you fall off a cliff to your death, every game should be like that. Imagine the bitching if every cliff you walked off of killed you instantly. You want general equipment? Every weapon or shield looks the same for every class. How freaking boring is that? I wish some items would be more class based than it is now. And someone remind me again whats the point of jumping in an RPG?

Killer Klown
May 11th, 2005, 03:38 PM
It's not the falling to your death bit that bugs me, it's the running into invisible walls because the game decides that, what in the real world would be a six inch ledge, is too far for your character to descend. As far as general equipment, I'm not talking about the weapons and shields - but more specifically the armor. I'm all for _some_ class specific armor sets for each class, but also throw in some armor that's spread out between the classes. As it stands now, one Necro could look exactly like any other Necro out there depending on which equipment they've found.

NiteX
May 11th, 2005, 08:08 PM
Well, to tell you the truth I've never really had any problems with invisible walls people keep talking about. If there is a 6 in. ledge my character will go right over it. The only times I notice something like an invisible wall is when trees are to close together or there is a part to the level that serves no purpose in going to. The only other time would be if there is lag. A lot of people confuse invisible walls with lag.

DarkAnxiety
May 11th, 2005, 08:38 PM
Ah yes the constant confusion that is lag!

"Why have i stopped moving?!" "Why can't i hurt this monster?!" "Why does my character keep jumping from place to place?!"

You know there are times when i think lag is a figment of our imaginations or better yet an excuse game developers use when there just to lazy to fix an actual problem! :P

after the patch, i started experiencing some lag last night. it wasnt terrible but was very annoying when it did happen. at one point when i was leading a group to Kryta, 2 people were booted after going through a portal to Kryta. this was probably because of lag or may be a bug. sucks for them because they have to go through the path again.

btw, the other day someone from AT msg me while i was on GW saying that i can considered myself added. who was that and added to what?

Rogue? Lol, this isn't WoW.

I'd prefer Mesmer anyway as it's such a hard class to play.

I started the game initally as an Elementalist/Mesmer and found myself massacring any opponent I'd come in contact with. Now that I'm a Mesmer, I find it's far more difficult to succeed and I'm forced to apply many new tactics. I used to use the basic Aura/Flare and then drop a Fire Storm if opponents grouped. Now being a Mesmer main I die a lot more trying to use different strats. I've found that Shatter Delusions is a key in my destruction of any enemies. I just cast Empathy and Conjure Phantasm, do some attacking and other casting, and then remove empathy for an additional 30ish points of damage just before it removes. As an elementalist secondary I can also use Fire Storm, but I don't put many points toward the Fire attribute so it's almost not worth using a lot of the time and I don't have Flare to compliment my attacks. The only reason I feel like sticking with the Mesmer over the Elementalist is because he looks so much cooler. Sure, I lose the energy storage and as such, the effectiveness of Aura of Restoration, but I still prefer looking debonair over looking like a power ranger, hehe.

Anyway, that's enough randomness about classes.

I've pretty much decided to stick with muh Mesmer, so on with the strats!

I meant Rogue clothes. There's Stylish clothes and Rouge clothes in the post-searing of Ascalon City.

Here's Rouge (fear my silver/yellow mixed colored mask):
http://img11.echo.cx/img11/9634/gwmanintehmask0su.th.jpg (http://img11.echo.cx/my.php?image=gwmanintehmask0su.jpg)

Well since your secondary is Elementist, you might want to boost up on Energy Tap (steals energy from target), but its a Inspiration ability so it might not be so good for you. As you said that you use that combination, Backfire is a must have in your arsenal since its also a Domination ability (it deals more than all of the Domination combo). Now if you were to go to Arena: Energy Burn, Ether Feast, Energy Tap, Backfire, Power Leak, Mantra of Flame(weak but ok), and others would rape any magic users especially other Mesmers. The Domination combos including Imagined Burden would keep warriors off for a while. There are other combinations but I use most of these abilities anytime I head for the Arena.

Well, I think I'm creating my fourth new character. After playing as a Warrior/Ranger, a Mesmer/Elementalist, and an Elementalist/Mesmer and getting them all to level 8, I've found that the Elementalists are the character of choice. I'm not going to delete the afformentioned characters, but I did delete in Elementalist in a moment of passion. I plan to recreate him, but I'm unsure of an appropriate second class. I'm moving toward Mesmer but I don't recall using that class's abilities very much. The other choice is Necromancer, which I might go with.

"ArenaNet isn't lazily sitting back and basking in the success: tons of new content is already in the works. The main focus of ArenaNet's presentation at E3 is the live content they plan to roll out onto the servers over the next several months.

First off, coming to current players this summer (at no extra charge) is a whole new region called "Sorrow's Furnace." We saw a brief video presentation of the new area."

New me:

I just bought my new cape and I like it a lot as it seems to look decent with all of my characters and matches my Mesmer persona, given he's my main character. I'm sure you can't tell, but my Mesmer is currently following three lines of clothing to get the best of all the worlds. I'm stuck right now as a Fire/Insp Mesmer, focusing on fast AoE damage and Ether Feast for healing.

My warrior:

This guy is still a work in progress and only has a few post-quests under his belt. I already have him a gold Axe to wield, but he doesn't have enough axe mastery for it. Hoping to get to him once my Mesmer is far enough along that I don't feel bad about it.

...been losing my life...erm, I mean playing this game for just about a month now. I *swear* to god that this (as well as my already adept ability at procrastination) is the reason I failed my Pre-Calculus class this semester. If only I'd bought it two weeks later!

*sigh*

Anyway - I'm VERY tempted to do the "leapfrog grind" and work my way across the world by doing all the campaign missions exclusively...but I'm afraid that: 1) I might miss some kewl item/skill/quest by bypassing all the side missions, and 2) I'm *damned* sure that I wanna be ready for anything I come across by accruing as much "in-the-field" experience as possible. So I'm doing a one to two city campaign mission jump per gaming session, followed by a one to two session between-city backtrack to pick up random quests. So far, so good. I'm currently at Frost Gate with my two higher-level characters.

In any case, I've got a pair of 15th-level chicks (a Necro/Ranger; an Elem/Mesmer) and a "new" 10th-level guy (Mesmer/Ranger). His name is "Tomas Braxxisz ". (If you put the one name into your "Friends" list, the other two will be found under his name as they're all on the same account)

I'm *definitely* up for hooking up with any of my fellow ATrippers...gimme a holler and identify yourselves and I'll gladly swing a sword/cast a spell alongside you!

Yours Always,
Fester

P.S.

You might have to type to me more than once, as I am not in the habit of paying attention to the chatty text down in the corner. The friends I already play with can't stand that. Oh, well...

Hey Digi, you found that axe from the Fissure? How many different colors are there? Also why the fuck don't they have glowing swords. I think the only weapon that glows is the axe. Fucking lazy bastards need to make all weapons glowable or somethin. I'm starting to notice a lot of shit either they left out or was just too lazy. Elemental weapons don't make elemental effects, it might be I'm use to Diablo. Or maybe I've just been playin the game to much now I'm starting to find things to bitch about. I like to bitch about the little things. For some reason little things are the most important thing to me.

Digital Limit
June 6th, 2005, 09:40 PM
The axe comes in as many colors as it can be dyed, which there appear to be many. Though, the dying process is all really screwed up, so getting the color you want is tricky. I actually had to dye this axe ORANGE to get it GREEN. Yeah, it makes no sense. You could have it be blue if you want, as that appears to be your color of choice.

As for where I found this, it wasn't in the fissure. I was just chillin' in Druid's pass or whatever it's called, and someone offered up Chaos Axes for 1k a pop. I decided I'd buy it for shits n' giggles with my warrior. As you can see, his armor and shield now revolve around that color, as I couldn't get the axe to glow yellow for some reason.

NiteX
June 6th, 2005, 10:14 PM

Digital Limit
June 6th, 2005, 11:20 PM
You can actually dye weapons that aren't Chaos, but the differences are hardly noticeable. If anything you'll notice the hilt is changed to the color of the dye. Though, if you look even closer, the weapon overall will also have a tint in that color as well. It's much more noticeable when you're sporting a blue weapon as opposed to a red one.

That's nice.

Are you a woman, 'cause I hate it when guys use the female models. It's just creepy; especially when I start coming on to them.

Yeah, I was just about to make a comment on that. It's a fucking game you don't hit on people in a god damn game.

i like how people get meet and marry people they find over the internet. not those dating sites stuff, thats sorta ok (still stupid). but through forums, or mmo's...damn, what are they thinking?

whats their married life going to be? the sad part is that now they are married, the would have less time to play the game or go to the forums where they met?

coming on to people in the game, yuk! i've seen some of these things happening in GW. i guess if you had a girlfriend, i mean with a real person who is a girl, then i think you would've have this problem hitting on people in GW. even if it's a sexy female model :p

Digital licks his lips. He's full of seduction and temptation. There is nothing holding him back. To be continued...
