Start it off my Grammy has alzhemiers, and probably asks the same questions 4-10 times a day, doesn't want to take her meds, hates to shower, and drives everyone bananas wanting to go somewhere all the time.

So my Mom decided without my say so that she, my dad, my other grandparents, and my brothers were going to the beach for the weekend without me and Grammy. To top it all off my dad has just started this Paintball field & Store. And so we haven't exactly gotten any business yet, but I had to sit up there for 7 hours Sat and 5 Sunday and do nothing just to see if someone would come. So for the weekend I got to go back and forth between watching my grandmother, and sitting at the paintball field doing nothing, and laundry. I have been making sure my grandmother puts on good clothes every morning. I've had to force her to take her pills, and make sure that she eats, besides taking her and picking her up from daycare today and Friday. And sitting at home all night, just so she won't wake up and no one be here. There was a big party all weekend that I didn't get to go to, because I had to stay at home with my grandmother. I've gotten to hear the same questions all weekend, "Where is everybody?" "Is your mom at work?" "What day is today?" "Do I have anything to do today?" ALL WEEKEND.

So my mom comes home tonight. Today we had ran out of cups and apparently, I didn't notice but my grandmother pulled one of the cups from the China cabinet. And my grandmother washed dishes this afternoon, so I didn't notice the cup, and my mom BITCHES me out for the stupid cup being out. Asking me if no one did dishes all weekend, and why I let Grammy pull out one of the cups out of the China cabinet. Like it was all my fault and I had control over it. Not, "Thanks Ashley for watching Grammy while I sat at the beach all weekend and did nothing". I don't mean a little bitching either. After I did all this shit for her this weekend, she has the nerve to give me hell about a stupid cup. Man, I'm in a really bad mood. Sometimes life just really blows ass.

EDIT: I also got a ticket this weekend for my registration being out. Great weekend!

What would be the consequenses if you told them 'no' you were not going to do that kind of duty again? Also, just to play the devil's advocate here.... Do you otherwise ever watch your granny? or does everyone else and they really did need the vacation and felt that it was your turn to do a tour of duty?

I also would like to say I think it's a sign of good charactor that you feel the need to make sure your grandma got her meds and clean clothing....some people wouldn't have even tried. Your grandma can't help what's happening to her and doesn't understand she's repeating questions....but I'm sure she would get upset and puzzled if somone snapped at her for doing so...because to her, it was the first time she asked.

Anyhow... suck it up...and try to forget this hard weekend. Life can dish out a lot worse...after being on this earth for 41 years, believe me, I know. : (

It gets better after time. The longer they piss you off, the more of an asshole you become. After a while you become so big of an asshole that you're a bigger asshole then they are. The the kind of asshole-y things that they do is automatically countered by you with an even bigger asshole-y thing. Trust me, I know.

I couldn't say no. I had class on that Monday so I couldn't have gone with them. But I didn't get asked to go either. My grandmother lives with us so my mom watches her 24/7. Grammy goes to daycare Mon, Wed, and sometimes Fri from nine to about 4. There was another lady watching her with me, but she was only watching her when I had to sit at the paintball field or had to go to class. The rest I had to watch her. I'm over it now, it doesn't take me long to get over stuff like that. It just made me really pissed at the time, cause sometimes my mother acts like she is the only person on the planet. She yelled at me about the cup and then complained that she had been driving since one and it was like eleven when they got home, but she didn't consider that I had been with Grammy and going to school which is much worse than riding in a car. I watch my grandmother when my mom needs me to but usually it's a couple of hours not a whole weekend. Friday afternoon to Monday night. It's like watching a 3 year old that knows she's 70 and can do what she wants and if she doesn't get her way she throws fits. And yes, life can dish out worse, but watching your grandmother loose her mind is pretty high up there on the list of life sucking things.

Wasn't trying to belittle what you were dealing with as far as your grandma...watching her deteriorate like that... My comment was more about doing things (working) when you don't want to.

Btw, my grandma also died of Alzhiemer's and I also watch cancer kill both my mom and dad....my dad died fairly quick of it, but my mom had a very very slow and painful death. There were times I didn't want to spend hour after hour watching after her - sometime for up to 2 days at a time with no help at all. She was very crazy towards the end and lashed out and tried to fight and be un-cooperative when it came to trying to help her do things - like changing her bedding...she would grab onto the rails and not let go..etc. and it just wore me out trying to care for her -- but that was easy compared to what she was dealing with... : (

Yes, the "grammy" lives at our house with us. My mom has a twin sister that wants to help about as much as a 600lb man wants to share the cheetos. Even though she doesn't have a job, and just goes on vacations and takes care of her two boys. She pretty much doesn't want to help my mom at all. Caregirl, did you ever talk to your mom after the incident, when she was calm, to explain how you felt unappreciated after all you had done? Just getting your mom to apologize to you for her balistic attitude, and if she acknowledges that you were a large help to the family, will get rid of a lot of that pent up anger...hopefully. I think the best thing right now to do is just to talk with your parents and explain to them your situation and your feelings. If you never have had really serious talks with your parents, now is the time to start. It gets much easier once you do it more often, since you begin to feel more comfortable talking about your feelings with your parents.
