I was just wondering if any of the people that have played this game have any problems getting it to run. When I say start new game it makes a "ding" noise as the level is loading, freezes, and then dumps me to desktop saying it had an unhandled protection error.

I have XP Pro, have all updated and certified drivers for my Geforce 3 Ti 200 and sound card, but I using the newest Nvidia drivers now with the same problems.

Tech support for this game is almost nonexistent... no help from them... has anyone had this problem?

P.S. It worked fine with Windows 98SE but now its all gone to hell. And I have the retail version of the game not a downloaded copy. Any help would be appreciated.

I haven't re-install GTA3 since I re-built my rig, but the shit never ever crashed the time I was playing. I used XP Pro, and my game was an un-patched version... emmm.... it is very confusing.

I have tried patched and unpatched. And I know about the Windows update and always keep my OS updated. Any other suggestions?

some questoins....

1) is your copy a legal version?

2) what programs you run at the same time when you play the game? Like, what background task you have your OS doing?

3) what video card you use?

4) what sound system you have?

5) ...and what mo-bo you have?

I play it with XP Pro, there is some web address in the help file that shows you where to download some windows update that fixes the problems.

Answer to Yian's post:

#1: Yes I bought the game its legal.

#2: I have no background tasks running in my taskbar, haven't tried to close the other ones (keep messing up and closing ones you have to have)

#3: I use a NVidia GeForce3 Ti 200 video card with the newest drivers. I even tried the Windows certified drivers just to be sure.

#4: I use a Sound Blaster Live 5.1 X-gamer hooked to a Klipsch ProMedia 5.1 set in 5.1 mode on the sound card scheme.

#5: I use a Abit KT7A the one with the old PC133 ram. I have 512mb ram and a 1.2 Athlon CPU and XP Pro.

Ran it fine until the upgrade to XP Pro.

you might want to get this patch installed, just to see if it helps...

Is that patch included in the Windows update thing or are there other patches that could be installed?

I'm not sure, but it fixes certain direct3d related problems.... I didn't thought of this but you might want to try the windows update first, just see if it is there already...

Your hardware looks all fine, to me that is.... shouldn't be any conflicts there... besides the drivers for hardwares, and updates for OS, GTA3 released some patches for some issues, too... You might want to go get the updates...

Try to drag down your sound hardware acceleration by one level, see if it helps. If your card uses EAX, doing so will disablr it and it might help if that is what causing the problem...

BTW, you sure the error message said Unhandled Protection, not Unhandled "Exception"?

Ok I did patch the game I'm gonna try some of the other things you suggested.

It probably did say unhandled exception error instead of protection and I'm just too stupid to tell the difference.
