It really depends on what you like to do while playing an mmorpg. Do you like PvE or Pvp, or a mix of both? Do you like to group, or take it solo? Do you like fantasy based or sci-fi? I would go to the www.mmorpg.com forums and just take a look at what people are saying about the different mmorpgs.

WoW for PvE.

Guild Wars for PvP.

City of Heroes for Soloing.

...and screw the rest.

Of course, these aren't hard and fast, but fairly accurate.

Ummmm soloing on City of Heroes is very hard.

Really? I read that you solo pretty much all the time, outside of some battles that require a team. Hrm, misinformation rules.

Here's what I'd say:

PVE: Everquest II (since most servers, if not all, don't allow pvp)
Mix of PVP and PVE: World of Warcraft
PVP: EVE Online, Lineage II, Shadowbane (since Guild Wars is not an MMORPG)

WoW is horrific for PvP.

"OMtehGzor MuY LVL EeS 1ee7 hIgHer tahn j00rz sEw eYe teH w1nnrar!"

That, and the classes lack balance. Never the less, it's definitely an addiciting game.

It's MMORPG enough to be considered, esspecially given it's strong PVP component. Let's not get hung up on technicalities.
