Has anybody heard of Limewire? What can you tell me about it?

It's another P2P program thats been around for awhile. I used it once if I remember correctly and it was alright. mIRC and BT are better for when you "need" something.

Limewire works well.. I use it for finding singles of songs that I want.. it's perfect.

mIRC is mainly a chat program but it has file sharing built in and people have set up servers with tons of bots that just sit there and take orders (basically) for files.

And BT = Bittorrent, which is another filesharing program. It works slower (usually) than mIRC but it's much more reliable.

Correction to Hobbes: if you know the right sites, BT can be faster than mIRC. But if you know the right servers for mIRC, it'll be faster than anything.

...saying mIRC is a file sharing program isn't really accurate....mIRC is nothing more than an IRC client with DCC support....there are plenty of others out there that'll do the same thing, all of whose legitimate users enourmously outnumber its illegitimate ones....

Yeah, private BT sites are pretty sweet. BT can be really fast when you get a new file with tons of seeders.

Let's say you are looking for a song, Enter Sandman by Metallica for example, and the search brings up about 20. Is there any particular thing to look for in choosing which one to download? Somebody told me that bitrate(?) was important.

Bitrate is basically the quality. 128 is acceptable if you aren't too particular about your music, but I prefer a minimum of 192. Anything 192 or above will be best. Also, you'd wanna look for what kind of person is hosting it. Like if it's on a modem it's gonna take a lot longer for you to download than if it's from somebody on a T1 connection.

Another note: if a song appears multiple times with the same filesize, bitrate or peer, it is most likely to be a dud.
