Having strange problems with my cdroms

HI guys, I am having kind of a strange problem with my cdroms. At first they wouldn't always recognize cds that I put in my computer. I would then restart my computer and then they would usually work. If it wouldn't it would just say error: drive e: is unaccessable or whatever. Well tonight the problem didnt go away and now if I try to access My Computer to look at the cdroms my pc just reboots. I can't get in there to see what the problem is ot uninstall the drive because it just crashes.

I am using Win2k and have a creative 12x dvd and TDK cdrw. Anyone have any suggestions on what to look for here. I made sure all the cables were secure. I also checked to see if anything seemed hot. The cdroms and processors seem cool,but the hd are a bit hot. I think they have always been that way though. Any help would be much appreciated.

I exprienced a problem like that before, but my exprience was more like a ghost story. If you want my help, sit through my story...

I was putting my cds into my roms as usually but the autoplay didn't go, so I went to My Computer. Strange, the icon of my CD-Rom has disappeared. I was forced to restart my computer so the thing will be detected. It then became more and more often and I started to wonder what is wrong with this thing...

One day, the strangest of all happened: the icon was there, but no matter what cd I put into the rom, it won't read it! Then I started to try all my cds, none of them worked... ... except Homeworld's disc. Strange huh? Only Homeworld's CD would work! What did Sierra do to that CD...?

Okay, anyways. My problem was that I have the CD's audio cable plugged onto my soundcard. For some reasons, the soundcard didn't work well with the rom, and it gives the rom problems while booting up. Usually when a device caused an error during the boot-up, it will just say (none) because it can't be booted (detected).

So... is your cd's audio cable on your soundcard? If so, unplugged and see if it helps... it won't do shit to your sound ferformance so don't worry. Just unplugged the fucker and see if the shit persist. If so, come back and some other people can help you.

first and foremost; try and get into safe mode and check out your device manager.

Well if i have the drives open i can get into the drive manager. I tried to uninstall the drives and reboot and i got nothin. Gonna try the cd cable, I think I have that plugged in.

do you have windows 98?
change the cache on your drives...that should fix it.

no I have Win2k I tried the cd cable thing and it just reset so I said fuck it last night. I have unplugged my dvd rom, but the cdrw still won't recognize a cd. I also just did a format last week. My computer should be pure. Gonna diddle with it some more. I am not sure if there is a way to change the cache under win2k. Thanks for the ideas guys.

Have you tried cleaning your drives lens? When mine was messing up that fixed everything. Just pop that bitch open and wet a cue-tip with some windex. And gently whipe the lens, it worked for me.

Ok well after i rebooted this morning all i had was crashes left and right. I couldnt even open my control panel it would crach, internet explorer would crash, etc.

So this morning i just decided to format. I didnt have time to figure it all out. Now pc seems to be working. I think that i may have gotten a nasty virus or something.

Make sure to look out for bad sectors, it would be a good idea to scandisk asap just to be sure.

Dood read the rest of the freaking thread! he said "if i clicked on control bar, it would crash......" which says to me that either a sorcerer has cast a hex on his computer, there is a viri, something is wrong with the installation of his os, he is missing files/files are corrupted because his HD is skrewed up, or his computer has developed an AI and refuses to run anything that it does not like.

Oh, and sometimes, it is required to scan a CD to insure that everything on it is readable.

Ok cool. BTW, how on God's green earth did you happen to have a system with a freaking 2700+ XP, but a 420mx PCI vid card?! Sounds like a dell. Except they are hardcore with that shit. Ya know, they'll have a 3ghz p4 paired up with a tnt2 ultra with 32mb of video ram. Oh yeah, and 133mhz sdram instead of ddr or rdram. :D Those guys are mean. Think about the tech support calls "Darn why can't doom 3 run, my pc is 4ghz!? Well sir, your video card only supports dx 6.0, and you only have 64mb of ram."

well...this system is fairly new...i need to save for a car...i built it myself never use the curse word dell towards me lol...and...dell only sells intel anyways...

im just waiting for the ati radeon 9800 pro to come out then get that cuz i dont think u can get it yet besides preorder for like 400 fuckin dollers... screw that...

and also...i work for everything i get my mom dont pay for shit...haha i bet half the kids on here get their rich parents to pay for their comp. gear...it really makes u not appreciate the value of things... "mom i just burnt out my 3ghz p4 and now i need another one to see if i can break the 499483 ghz barrier with overclocking with my prometia cooler"...man haha

and im only 17 i dont have a high class job...yet ...lol

oh...that video card was from an old compaq that i have and it runs all my games decently so im not really needing another one till i really need dx9... isnt compaq a curse word also ?

That's cool dude. When I was your age I was too busy working on my car to worry about my pc so it sucked too. :D It's cool though I know what you are talking about but those stupid rich kids usually go for a brand new SUV with a lift kit instead of a PC.
