In spite of all our talk in the screenshot thread, and the fact that I've been meaning to get a new one, I decided to make this thread.

First off... LCD or CRT and why?

Which moniters do you use?

Which ones would you recommend?

And if which one would you buy if you were upgrading?

I've got an NEC MultiSync FP912SB, which is a Black 19" CRT....I myself prefer CRTs to LCDs, simply because I like to run different games at a wide range of resolutions without any loss in picture quality......of course, the thing ain't exactly small....and it weighs a good 65 pounds, too.....unless there's a space issue, I always recommend a CRT over an LCD....less problems to worry about (dead/stuck pixels, ghosting, interpolation).....

Pretty much exactly what he said. ^

I prefer CRT monitors, because of the range of resolutions, and the greater picture quality overall, along with no risk of fucked up off-axis viewing or ghosting issues.

Granted, my CRT is 21", a bit less than half my age, and weighs 80 pounds. But still, I loves it. It's awesome, has run great with no problems even though it's old, and just makes me plain cooler than everybody else.

I used to have a Sony 19" Black CRT and it was awesome for the money (like $100) but it took up a huge amount of space, and it weighed a massive amount, which made it a bitch to carry to LAN's. Couple months ago I coughed up $350 for a Hyundai L90D+ which got a ton of great reviews at places like Tomshardwareguide.com for being an great 8ms gaming LCD. I've loved it since the day I got it, everything is much more rich and vibrant compared to the CRT and it takes up no space and weighs under 15lbs! I get no ghosting in games aswell. Downsides are that I have to run at a lower res (I miss 1600x1200 :() and that it has some bad viewing angles (Which means the images looks weird when you look at the screen at a high angle). Other than that I'm happy with my purchase, it owned my wallet, but I'm happy.

Fast paced games? CRT only. No denying it. No matter what the PR people say like it can't be noticed or it almost matches the CRTs, current LCDs are nowhere near as fast in their refresh as CRTs. Combine that with things like CRTs only running super at certain resolutions and I think you've got your answer.

If you ask me the only advantage a LCD offers is space. Not really worth the disadvantages.

So what about brand names? There are tons of CRT's on the market, what is good?

Numberwise its obvious that CRTs are faster (less than 1ms response) but all that matters is what you can see and I can't see a difference between my 19" CRT and my new 19" LCD when it comes to image response problems in fast paced games like CS or BF2.

Another plus to the LCD is that you have no glare, OH thank jebus! The glare on my CRT drove me insane during the day, and I did not wanna move my desk around.

If you've got the cash I'd say go for the LCD.

my 2cents.

I have me an LCD thats pretty decent. I want a new one with lower ms. I recommend get an LCD because CRTs are a thing of the past. I play all my games on it and rather the sharp crisp detail of a LCD screen rather than the blur shit look of a CRT.

Well, if you don't believe me look it up at places like anandtech, xbit or tomshardware. They all agree that CRTs are still superior. Besides even if flatscreen technology is the "future" a good CRT like the one I have now will last for years.

+1

By the way, when you watch a DVD ... say a fast paced action seen, defnitely the LCD sucks cos of the ghosting.

N CRT should be the opposite meaning for blurring.....

Until the day you have LCDs with < ms than a CRT.....they will always rule the market.

Lanparties....yes....LCDs RULE.

Another point to add, which might seem minor but is pretty important, CRTs are easy to clean while LCDs are more sensitive. Like, let's say you're gaming online and you accidentaly sneeze on your monitor. It happens. With an LCD you get worried and crap, but with a CRT you just take off your shirt and quickly wipe it. Also, cleaning dust off LCDs is a pain in the ass. With a CRT you just use a moist cloth.

I have never seen ghosting on my LCD, either. In fact, I'm still trying to figure out what ghosting is, because I just never have exprienced it...

LCD is more expensive, it has a fixed resolution (usually 1280X1024) for good image quality, and a lot of them still have problem with viewing angles. The best LCD monitor is actually those Macintosh ones, but I'm not sure if there is a solution available to make them work for PC. But LCD saves a lot of space, it's light, and it has no reflections.

In my opinion, space and weight shouldn't be too big of an issue, because it's not like you move your monitor every time you have a gaming session. Besides, you can easily refit the top of your monitor into a usable space, as long as you don't block the heat outlet. The reflection is a bit more complicated. Windows aren't the only light sources, and playing games in the dark hurt some people's eye.

The reasons I use LCD monitors are 1): even CRT monitors can still be made to provide extra space, they will always have limitations due to its bulky nature. LCD provides more flexible solutions to space managements. 2): It does not hurt my eyes. CRT monitors, despite of its wide range of refreshing rates available, always make my eyes sore after certain period of time. LCD have never hurt my eyes in any way, even after hours of viewing.

Dell has good CRTs and LCDs from what I've heard (The widescreen LCDs are teh pawnage but you'll need atleast $400-800). I've got a Hyundai L90D+ and I almost bought a BenQ 19" something that I hear was also good.

What do you guys think of the Samsung SyncMaster 997DF? The black/silver one of course.

I think I've narrowed it down to the SyncMaster 997DF or the ViewSonic VX724. What do you guys think?

Just want some feedback before I make a buying decision, does anyone here notice any ghosting with a 12ms lcd in games? Will 12ms be a problem in gaming? It would be ideal to go for a 8ms I know but I really like the Sony's HS95/B because of its glossy bright screen and its design. Only thing I'm worried about is the 12ms. The NEC 1970GX is nice but I can get a better deal on the Sony.
