Splinter Cell demo

I've been having a lot of trouble during my quest for any Splinter Cell demo. I went to many sites trying to get different demos and all have ended up in failure. If it wasn't a Battle Field 1942 demo, it was a hardware problem for my 550 Mhz computer. I'm now trying to download the demo from it's homepage on my 1800Mhz as I type; but it is taking an hour and I am very impatient for good reason. If any one knows a site that has a real demo of Splinter Cell, or if you know wht the problem is. PLEASE HELP!!! :'(

1) 550 MHz? I hope you're not talking about CPU because that really sucks. Don't try the demo, and don't buy the game, because your computer can't handle it.

2) If you're a 56ker don't ever try download anything more than 5 MB. It takes more than patience to keep your connection going.

3) Now it jumps back to 1800Mhz!? What is that? CPU has nothing to do with connection speed, right?

Using getright i have downloaded many files above 150Megs with no problems. Let me try to explain this to the best of my knowlage. The speed you download at has nothing to do with your CPU speed, unless you have a 486DX, even then i don't think it matters. It has to do with the quality of your ISP, the quality of your line, and the server you are downloading from. If you have a T3 connection, and the server is either slow or extremly bogged down with people downloading from it. You are not going to be downloading at the full speed of your connection. The best time to download something is at night when most people in the world are sleeping. Its also a good idea to find a site thats not really popular, just make sure you scan the file for viruses.

However, Ray, your processor does play a role. i used to have a p1 processor with 16MB RAM and cable connection, things went AMAZINGLY slow.

But the impact it has isn't as "In yo' Face" as he is trying to say it is. I havn't noticed any difference in net speed when i switch from my celeron 500Mhz to this Athlon XP 2000+. I know 56K isn't fast, but i should of saw at least a 0.01kb/s increase if what he is saying is true.

and that system was horrible, are you sure the slowness you felt wasn't just your slow processor taking its sweet time to load windows, and menus? And with a system that slow, i'm sure the HD was slow too, so it probably too a little time to load cached images.

My point was that to a certain extent, your rig does influence your internet speed. In my case, it took so long to process all the information that the internet was useless. I don't think it would make much difference with a 56k, no offence. But in my case, if I upgraded to a P4 2GHz not much would change. It would go a bit faster, but not "OMFG this is amazing" fast. I have a P3 866 btw

ok, in theory, the bandwidth doesn't have shit to do with the cpu power. the DSP is on the modem, so the processor doesn't have to do much. in practice, i suppose the download speed is dependent on how fast your system can cache it. having an OC-3 on a home computer is useless, simpy cause your computer can't write to the HD that quickly (unless maybe you've got those nice ultra320 scsi's in RAID :D).

All in all, there are 4 things that affect internet speed :processor, memory, your hard drive, and cache. Actually, let me rephrase that, your computer doesn't really affect the speed of your connection but it affects the way the speed is handled. Web browsers rely on the speed and power of your computer the same as any other program or game you're playing. The main components controlling the speed of your computer are RAM, the CPU and your hard drive. When dealing with slow ass modems like (56k and under) sometimes the speed of your connection depends on your ISP’s connection to the internet and the number of customers they have.

I'd like to stay and argue this but I need to go join Ray on the Super Number Muncher's Server. I promised him I would play a game with him since noone else had patience for such a slow laggy connection.

well, a celeron 500mhz shoul be plenty to keep a 56k modem humming. Now, if you were to compare that 500mhz celeron to a 100mhz pentium or 66mhz 486 you would notice some change. Lan connections are faster with a faster computer as well, since it uses some CPU, but not much.

and now you're tryin to get technical, so, as light hearted as this is, lemme tell u you're stupid. the internet sends data to you at any speed which it wants. a 56kpbs connection is gonna send data to your computer at 56kbps whether your computer likes it or not. likewise a cable modem will deliver at whatever rate it can, whether your comptuer can process it or not. it's ALREADY on your HD, in a cache. how long it takes your PC to display it is another thing. but splinter cell.....a download??? the DSP has already decoded the analog signal, and all it needs to do is copy another copy from the cache onto your designated location. now, tell me, what hard drive cannot write at 1.5mbps? are we talkin about a damn 486 or somethin???

the computer does not affect the internet speed buddy. the internet doesn't slow down for your PC to catch up (ever play multiplayer games? slideshows :rolleyes: ).

I didnt take a fucking class for A+ I read the book some and did some practice exercises before I took the tests...because thats how you study. What grades do you have in school eh? Internet connection is not a video card it doesnt matter how fast is your computer.
Few weeks ago i swiched from PIII 800mhz 512MBram to PVI 3000mhz 1024MBram and all though i have a cable i didnt notice any increase in internet speed.
