Hey guys I was going to get another usb flash drive (i currently have a 512) and I've been doing some research on the market and 1GB - 2GB cost about 110 - 150. So why not get an external hardrive while at it?

Could you guys help me out and give me some reliable brand/products I should look into? 60 - 80 GB is what I'm shooting for.

i like my 120 maxtor. it had given me no problems so far. and i turned a Westgate 160 into an external using an enclosure and no problems wiht that either. so far....

Yeah, you can just get a regular IDE drive and throw it in an enclosure to have the same effect. That gives you the option of throwing it inside a PC later on should the situation arise.

Yeah IDE/SATA OEM HD + Enclosure is a lot cheaper than a prebuilt external from Maxtor, WD etc.

$110 for a USB flash drive? Is that in US$?

Shit... I got mine from Singapore, F$130, which is about US$70 I'd guess... I thought they'd be around the same price in the States at least.

I don't know where that price came from. 1GB sticks typically go in the $60-70 range, with 2GB sticks generally going for twice that price.

king speedy. do pray-tell where you can find 1 gigs for 60 bucks.

i like the idea of enclosure. i might go ahead and do that. ill do some research and see what i can come up with. when you enclose the hardrive though, do you hook it up to the cpu through a 2.0 usb port?

You could buy a laptop hdd and put it in an encasing. You can either hook it up to the USB or your firewire port. Firewire being the fastest.

And please don't say "hook it up to the CPU" cause that's like "OMG sumboddy stoles my meg@hurtz!"

I just ordered the 1GB OCZ stick today. The longer the warranty on these babies, the better.

Yeah, sorry, forgot to mention mine was a 1G stick, Kingston Data Traveller. Found out it was around US$74.

Wang, just for reference, Anandtech has just done a review (http://anandtech.com/memory/showdoc.aspx?i=2549) of various brand-name flash drives, including the OCZ.
