Hi, Im upgrading my PC and wondering if this looks ok. Im going with an AMD Athlon 64 3000+ and a ASUS A8N5X Socket 939 NVIDIA nForce4 ATX AMD Motherboard. I was wondering if this seemed like a good combination for a mid-range system. I was also wondering if I could use my current ram on the new motherboard. I have 512mb of PC-2100 and was wondering if anyone knew if the ASUS A8N5X could support it? Thanks

That's a pretty low upgrade. What do you have now, and how much can you afford to spend? Also, keep in mind that the motherboard you specified has a PCI-Express slot, so you'll need a PCI-Express video card.

I have a P4 2.4 GHZ but it's burned so I need a new processor and motherboard. Since Im a student I dont have that much money, but what would you recommend for $220-260 for a processor and motherboard combined(Im leaning toward AMD). I also need an AGP slot, since I cant afford a PCI - express card.

I suggest you get this combo
Asrock Dual 939 (AGP & PCI-E Slot):70$
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16813157081
AMD 3000+ 939 Venice Core : 137$

Corsair 512mb DDR 400 (PC-3200) ram: 40$
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16820145026
and get rid of your shitty 512 PC 2100 ram and if your in overclocking or KNOW about it with 512mb single module u can clock the shit out of your Venice A64 :p
70+137+40= 247$

the Asrock board is a great low-cost alternative, and having the dual-slot will save you a ton if you wanna yp the video card. I'd get a second stick of RAM, though. For only another $40, the performance boost you'll see is more than worth it.

ASRock motherboard is not a good overclocker, so he won't be clocking the shit out of anything with that.

Do you think before you post, or do you just type random shit and hope it makes sense? Even so, I doubt he'll be doing any overclocking with this setup.

That's with a multiplier so low you can't up anything else w/o throwing huge sums of money for expensive ram and what not. Also you have to voltmod to make it go that far. Yes I think before I post and I have done ample research about the ASRock motherboard, not to mention the issues with it.

Jman, how much money are you willing to spend on the entire system? $220 - $260 for the mobo and the CPU, but what about the video card, the sound card, and everything else?

I have a hard drive and video card and just plan on recycling everything that I have. I plan on using the built in sound even though it takes some CPU power. About overclocking, I dont plan on it, but I might think about it. Thanks for the tips

ASrock Bios updated , one of my friends have clocked his 3000+ Winchestor upto 2.4ghz with 512mb ram and with 512mb single module of ram AMD clocks alot .

But why mention overclocking when he says he wants a budget rig?

Well, if you have a budget rig but you want decent performence, overclocking seems to be the only way to go.
