After trying to access the My UW account for the past week after being told it would be up and running within the week, I finally decided to call back and double check what the issue was. They ran me through a few steps and tried resetting my password, but to no avail. After a few moments, the woman that was helping me asked if I just wanted to know if I got in. Of course, I replied with a yes. She said I was in. I asked for reassurance. I was in.

Ecstatic with relief, I thanked her and sighed a satisfied, "Hell yeah."

That's some weight off of my shoulders; time to get my homework done.

I'm just glad I don't have to go somewhere that sucks.

My brother lives down there, it's a good school, and a lot of people I respect are also going.

Overall, it's definitely a positive outcome.

Hrm, there's nothing I'm too curious about.

Any advice or things to look out for is welcome.

It's also nice to hear positive/negative experiences.

Oh yeah: any profs I should be looking for, or looking _out_ for?

Try to live in the souteast dorms your first year. If you get stuck over by lakefront, you are pretty much screwed as most lakefront dorm dwellers are shut-ins. Depending on how far along you are in your math cirriculum, watch out for Math 222. It's the most failed course on campus. Other than that, try not to gather in large groups when looking for parties in the beginning of the year. Large groups(15+) of giddy youngins walking down the street just screams freshman, and if a certain drunk upperclassmen finds you, well... there will be consequences, mainly of the verbal abuse form.

As for professors, try to stay way from any names sounding too foreign. This campus is chaulk full of foriegn professors who can't speak proper english to save their souls. Sure they were revolutionaries in their field, but if you can't understand them, it means nothing.

Also, if you plan on bringing a bike, ride around a bit before classes start to get comfortable with the streets. I fucking hate it when students who don't know shit go the wrong way on the bike paths and nearly run me over.

If you are crossing the streets in the madison, YOU always have the right of way... ALWAYS!

Thats all.

Ops, I almost forgot. GO TO THE FOOTBALL GAMES. This is a crucial/fundamental part of going to Madison.

You get pretty used to the larger classes. Make sure you find a group of kids in your class to do homework with. It makes it a lot easier to keep up with your studies.

Shut-ins? So, you're saying that there won't be any parties worth attending, or what?

I'll be finishing AP Calculus this year. Does this still concern me?

Also, if you plan on bringing a bike, ride around a bit before classes start to get comfortable with the streets. I fucking hate it when students who don't know shit go the wrong way on the bike paths and nearly run me over.

Going the wrong way? Are there signs, basic rules ie. stay on the right, or do I just have to guess? I doubt this'll be an issue, but clarify if possible.

Ops, I almost forgot. GO TO THE FOOTBALL GAMES. This is a crucial/fundamental part of going to Madison.

School spirit? Good times?

Either way, it seems to be a phenomenom; there's always an assload of students walking toward the stadium whenever I'm in town.

How'd you manage?

Knew some people from each class, or did you just strike up a conversation with someone friendly and drop the offer?

Thanks for the tips :)

large classes arnt that big a deal. I think my largest class was about 600 people and it was an freshman intro course for Communication (though 5-600 is a normal # for any freshman intro course here)

ya get used to it, but definetly try to find people in your class to talk to. even if your only friends with them for that class it is helpful to have others around that can help if you miss a day or two, or 3, or a week.

lol. i never could understand the swiss - they sit there perfecting the art of kniving people and yet as soon as war breaks out they're the first ones on the fence.

holy educational moshpits, batman, the largest class I had first year was 300, and we had people sitting in the aisles!

If you don't like writing papers, try to get as many large classes as you can. Rarely, if ever, is a professor gonna sit down and grade 3,000 pages worth of shitty freshman writing. Also, if applicable, get in good with the TA. Nine times out of ten, they're more helpful than the prof.

@hal

Lakefront people are shut-ins? Could you elaborate?

More specifically, which hall(s) would you recommend?

http://img460.imageshack.us/img460/5279/campusmapresidency7gb.th.jpg (http://img460.imageshack.us/my.php?image=campusmapresidency7gb.jpg)

I think I've boiled my choices down to a few, but then I need to rank them. I'm not sure how I'm going to approach this.

Then again, I still have to talk this over with a friend of mine who is also going to Madison:

Chadbourne Residential College
Smith Hall
Elizabeth Waters Hall

They are in no particular order.

I'm partial to Chadbourne for a few reasons. The first reason is because it was mentioned to me by my friend, and he seemed rather adamant about it. I looked it up, and the proximity of the college is great. It's also a south eastern hall, which earns your trust. As you can see in the image, it also has a coffee house, a dining facility, and ARCH. I was hoping to be in a place with ARCH, if only to harness whatever technology might be down there. Lastly, the hall is one of the cult halls. I'm not sure if it's something that I should rank as positive, but I figured I should mention it. Oh, and by cult halls, I mean it's a residency that has me sign my name acknowledging that I understand I'm joining a residency with 'distinctive missions and a wide array of special programs'. Sounds reasonable.

Then again, there's Elizabeth Waters Hall. I liked this hall for it's lakeside location, it's interesting architecture, and again the proximity of the building. True, it goes against what you said by moving into a lakeside hall, but it's so beautiful. Is it wrong for me to like the view? Maybe I'm gay. Sexual preferences aside, I also chose this residency because it has ARCH and dining facilities. It seems like a reasonable choice.

Lastly, there's Smith Hall. Honestly, I only picked this hall because of its newness and its dining facilities. It'll probably be third place, unless I visit it and find the newness extremely attractive. Sadly, there's a huge price tag on the rooms. I think it's an additional 750$ or something else quite ridiculous. Then again there's a friggin' walk-in closet! Oh wait, I don't really care all that much. Never the less, its location is rather inconvenient relative to the other halls I mentioned. It's extremely south. Then again, it's new. I like new. Mmm.

Well, that was a lot of typing.

I should get MyUW account working so I can ask questions like these on their forums.

It sucks asking hal who might not even come back.

*cries*

Sure there are the few exceptions, but from my experience most people that live on the lakeshore do it so that they can have peace and quiet. This equates to locking ones self in his or her room and only coming out to eat/go to class.

More specifically, which hall(s) would you recommend?

Personally, I'd go with either Witte/Sellery if you are into parties/getting rowdy. Those dorms usually get the craziest (ogg included).

Waters might be a good choice, I hear the rooms are HUUGE. Since that dorm has been "girls only" for the entire time that I've known it, I can't really give any valuable input about it.

Smith? - shit, living there would be the tits! More expensive generally means hotter looking women. So if you are not living there, make some friends with people who are. Because, I gaurantee you, that dorm will house some of the hottest freshys on campus.

As for Chadbourne: I was never much a fan of the place, altho if you asked me to state why, I wouldn't be able to tell you.

Being close to an ARCH really is not that important. I never found a use for one. If you have a computer, you prolly won't either.

So from your list of 3, I'd prolly go with Sellery err... Chadbourne

That's all.
