Here is the thread for discussing the actual Oblivion game seeing as how it was released. Also we can share CS related stuff here as well seeing that it was released on www.elderscrolls.com and is available for download. For any CS newbies, like myself, they have created an wikipedia type database for building tips and possibly even mods themselves once done by the community.

Anyway Tip 1: Try and get possibly level 2 before attempting the first Oblivion Gate event, I had a somewhat difficult time with it so I'm working on stats before doing it again.

I'm 3.

Without giving much away, how do I join the thieves guild? I'm trying to question the beggers in Imperial City but that leads nowhere.

I got a letter from the leader during one of my goof-off games (You know, slaughtering towns wholesale) and found a book of the thieves guild charter in my actual play.

Ragdoll is some of the best I've seen. Physics... They're very good, but touching one object on a table causes the rest to settle... Touching one on a bookcase causes books to suddenly fall through the bookcase.

Either way: The environment is effing awesome! Paralysis+stairs ftw!

Steal and go to jail or find a way into the guild (so I've heard, first is easiest).

I have two characters and I've played both for about 6 hours and they're both level 1 still. One's a Knight in fighters and Arena (brawler) guild, the other is an Agent in Thieves (got the letter at a very awkward time) and Dark Brotherhood (archery kicks ass).

After getting a max frames of ~30 and lower outside, I think I might cave and go buy a 7900gtx, but I need to get a pci-express mobo too. There goes $800.

I have a couple of questions, maybe you guys can help me here:

First one is: As an Archer what would be the best guild for me to join?

Second: Can you play Mr . Nice guy in this game? I just keep reading about people killing townsfolk and stealing stuff and what not. Or is your character supposed to be evil and just do what you gotta do to get ahead?

I am enjoying the game greatly at this point though. Pulled me away from WoW and Warcraft 3 for a bit.

Bodom you can do whatever you want in this game, be good or evil.

Now I have to get to bed, damn you Oblivion for sucking all my time and I'm still doing quests in the capital city.

I haven't played the game yet because my ratio with the store is too low so I have to wait two days before they sell it to me, but I think being a bit above the minimum requirements is fine. I'm running a shitty rig that is probably going to fall apart in a few months and I'm confident that I'm going to be able to run it. Oh please let it run...

If I can get my modeling up, yeah. I can "voiceact" if you need any.

If I can do what you want, sure!

I figured out how to get into the thieves guide. If anyone wants to know, send me a PM, as I won't spoil it publicly for those who want to find it on their own.
Make sure that you include in your PM which level of detail you want:
1. How to start it.
2. What the quest is.
3. The full walkthrough of the quest.

Is that to say you think it sucks or is that to say you wanna be part of an "official dev. team"?

I have only one bad thing about it, and that's that it's a beast! My card just crashed. Other than my shitty card, AIM, and McAfee, however, this game is infinitely more stable than MOrrowind. That's biased though, since Morrowind didn't like me.

Mild "hinted-at" spoiler:

If anyone else gets inducted into the "hunting club" in Imperial City, let me know if you think the Dark Elf looks like Leonard Nemoy in Spock form. Seriously...

Someone asked how size compares to Daggerfall, which was fucking big.

COPIED STRAIGHT FROM THE WIKI:

"Morrowind vs Oblivion vs Daggerfall size comparison
It has been confirmed by producer Todd Howard that the world will be larger than the previous installment in the series: The Elder Scrolls III: Morrowind.

For comparison, the total above-ground area of Morrowind's game world was roughly 10 square miles; however, the central landmass was only around 6 square miles and then surrounded by water and tiny islands; not including either of the expansions.

With Oblivion, the above-ground areas are approximately 16 square miles, considerably less water coverage; plus more than 200 underground dungeon areas and the realm of Oblivion.

"The realm of Oblivion" in lore is described as infinite; in game terms, you'll be exploring large randomly generated sections of extra-dimensional terrain every time you enter a portal and leave the normal world behind you. This is similar to the random dungeon generation of The Elder Scrolls II: Daggerfall

There have been no official size estimates for the playable sections of "the realm of Oblivion".

Neither Morrowind nor Oblivion has come close to the massive world as it existed in Daggerfall, estimated as being roughly twice the size of Great Britain, with over 15,000 towns, cities, villages, and dungeons. Instead Oblivion aims to bring more life and detail to the world, and not just massive size."

Digital Pimp
March 22nd, 2006, 09:33 PM
HOLY FUCKING SHIT twice the size of Great Britain?! it just boggles my mind someone was ever able to create a game that had that much space.

And I agree it is much more stable than Morrowind, I just had the one crash yesterday and that was it, I think the restart helped.

Daggerfall generated towns and landscape on the fly, the map was not prei-built like Morrowind and Oblivion, so it wasn't hard to make it huge.

I keep crashing, but it's not Oblivion. My card keeps dying. It lasts for the longest time, then Oblivion starts freezing for a handful of seconds, unfreezing, freezing, unfreezing. I get about 10 freezes, then my card dies.

It's easily fixed by a reboot.

Let's have a progress update? I think I'm going to take shots of my stats and stitch them together.

Anyone else slightly appriciate the obscurity of the "Jokes Told: ###" stat?

Dark_Swordmaster

Can't you force AA?

Am I missing the AF setting or am I just going to have to force it?

I think I might try AA at 2, maybe 4. I bet my card'll die quicker/instantaniously.

Does anyone else notice that you can win solely by using a bow? If they can't catch you just count 'em dead. I killed a camp and a cave of bandits by backpedalling and shooting them. I cleared out a cave full of zombies by shooting one, backpedalling to the entrance, leaving, stealthing back in, rinse, reapeat, loot.

It's official! List your character when you feel like it!

I'm currently using an enchanted steel bow (ember bow, DAMN NICE! Stealth attack takes 3/4th of their health!) and an enchanted sword (drains stamina I believe, it ran out immediately after I picked it up.

Got the bow from a bandit camp, the sword as an inadvertant reward from a quest (read: a guy dropped it).

im getting pretty good framerates outside only when i have grass and tree canopy shadows off and lowering the view distance about half way. you're right Yian, cant have both HDR and AA on at the same time. although i dont find the HDR that appealing in Oblivion. makes everything too glowy and bright. already have bloom for that. right now i have HDR off. bloom and 4x AA on. looks better imo.

You click based on what you see their facial reaction will be it goes snarl, a bit peeved, apathetic, and smile. Then you select your choice based on the amount of rep it will garner and you also have to decide if you'll pick in relation of where the wheel will turn next and how that can affect the rep score as well.

FRAPS...

I'm currently stuck (okay, not stuck, tried for 10 minutes and then went to bed before I passed out at 4:30AM, playing from 11:00AM the previous day) on a thieves guild mission.

I rescued this Argonian from a secret prison cell where he and the guy I was supposed to find (who's now dead) were kept by a vampire. I'm looking for a book the guy had and the Argonian knows where it is, but won't tell me until we're out of the castle. Easier said than done...

Do you have to choose every option to get the thing to exit? Seems like that way to me...so then I inevitably choose an option that the npc won't like.

Yeah. It's a mini game. Try and get their "hate it" on the small slice. It takes a little practice, but I got the hang of it so you guys shouldn't have a problem.

Got out of the castle. Then had to redo it, as I got an invisible bounty. No one knew about it but the church, and I needed to cure myself at the church so... Myeh!

Interesting tidbit: The manual has a misprint. On the subject of bartering it tells you the right bag icon is for you to sell while the left is to buy, when in reality it's the other way.

Training starts costing money, and money isn't as quick to aquire as it was in Morrowind.

I just have loot because I found ONE thing that was worth it. The rest was solely thieves guild reward cash + indy questing.

Like Fatman said it can come from missions but it can be obtained in many places too (see next tag for fastest way to become one, which can be done right after you get out of prision). Missions or just running around, all it takes is a Vampire. Be warned that if you get a cure for Vampirism, you can never become one again, or so I've heard.

As soon as you get out of prision or wherever, head to North Country Stables (near Waynon Prior) and go DIRECTLY south from there. You'll reach Fort Carmala then enter the double doors. Go find the body and pick up the Arrow of Embers (just because they're cool) and enter the other double doors. As soon as you open, equip some heavy armor if you want and go into melee combat with the person on the stairs (Kill the second creature first if there is one since its random). After taking a few melee hits from the Vampire, it'll say you got a disease. Kill the Vampire, then continue on if you want to clear the dungeon. Finally go find a bed and sleep for a few days.

Just played the game, and wow.... this is my thought:

Fuckin A!

The game speed doesn't drop a single bit even if you increase your distance to max, with distance land and buildings. The grass and other things need to be scaled back to the mid range, but it is still very, very good looking. The game is very playable, though not superb, at 1280x1024, and with HDR, the realism of lighting totally stuns me and I quickly gotten over the fact of no anti-aliasing. OMG, HDR totally beats the shit out nof Bloom. Thanks to RAY16's advice!

The outdoor area loading is real-time! What a powerful engine!

The character is allowed to sit, to interact with the enviroment, and the customization of your character is so detaled my gf totally lost her patience just watching me building my character.

A few things though:

1) Can't wear rob when wearing armors? WTF? That's so not cool! Also, I'm not allowed to wear shirts and pants underneath skirts or armors? No Hood around my helmet? WTF?

2) The water effect still looks weird, almost as if they ported it right from Morrowind.

3) The inventory is so flooded with junk information and, after getting used to the ALL items inventory system from Morrowind, this new one is hard to get used to. Also, all the pop-ups doesn't really provisde any useful info other than annoying you...

4) It also annoys me that I can no longer perform actions in panning camera mode. How am I supposed to take amazing screenshots if I can't do anything with a different camera angle?

5) Fast travel sucks. I will stick to the paper map and never to touch that function. It takes away the realism.

6) from the paper map, it seems to me that this game is much, much smaller than Morrowind! What the hell? There are so few cities!

Still, despite of a merely accdetable framerate, I find this game supergoodlooking, and gee I can't wait to play more!

I can answer 6, well the game is said to be a bit smaller than morrowind. But lets not forget the tons of dungeons and forts to explore and also Oblivion it self. So I think over all it comes to almost as big as morrowind. I just got a cool amulet that lets me do water walk :D

Well, I know it's not smaller: http://www.gamespot.com/xbox360/rpg/theelderscrollsivoblivion/preview_6128767.html

The outside world, in terms of square miles, is a bit larger than Morrowind's, but it doesn't feel that way with the fast travel.

Well, after reading how machines lesser than mine were getting higher framerates than me, I decided to do the unthinkable. I lit a few candles, sacrificed a virgin, prayed heavily to Allah, and upgraded my ATI drivers. After the fire department left and the smoke cleared, I was left (surprisingly) with a working computer. I fired up Oblivion and was pleased to see that my framerate went from the 15-25 range, and easily doubled to 30-50. It still drops a bit if I'm indoors and multiple light sources are present, but the game is much more pleasant to play now. Just thought I'd give that tip out there to anyone wary about upgrading. For reference, my rig and settings are:

AMD 3500+
ATI 9800 All-In-Wonder Pro
2GB PC3200 RAM

1.) To simplify inventory they reduced it to clothing AND armor, meaning your armor is clothing. They also took out the moderate armor, thus light and heavy have some new additions.

2.) Yes, but at least it updates more than once a minute.

3.) I somewhat agree. There's a mod that allows twice as much inventory on the screen (12 instead of 6) at the cost of a few bugs. It doesn't do much other than offset the little magical/poison/stolen icons, but it's up to you to test it.

4.) Yeah, I miss the ability to do kewl stuff in "vanity" mode.

5.) I use fast travel when I wanna get stuff done. Other than that I hoof it (pun intended) on the father's horse, though Ray16's right: Wolds are the new Cliff Racers.

6.) The ground between them is huge though. Relatively speaking. And there's so much stuff in between them as well, and many, many small settlements (though not many that do anything worthwhile) in between them as well.

As for dragging corpses, I gave up on it. It's fun to throw them down cliffs, but it's too hard to get them to do anything decent.

Was anyone else disappointed that the map is nothing but the major cities? Kinda useless if you ask me. I prefer Morrowind's amazingly well detailed map. Then again, half the fun of these places is finding them...

I keep meaning to transpose that huge "misc" stats list from in-game and post it here with a shot of Inholth, but I've gotten distracted by playing. I'm just NOW doing my first Oblivion Gate. Horray for freeforming it! Level 11 and I have yet to SEE Martin.

I am for one extremely disappointed by it. Morrowind is way more diverse, because of the three different houses and the temple. It really gives you a different feel, seeing the giant crab of Redoran HQ, the flying asteroid of the Ministry of Truth, and the mushrooms and towers of Telvanni. Oblivion feels just liek Gondor from LOTR, and nothing more. Though the technology is impressive and the gameplay still is a lot of fun, the lore and the setting has taken a few steps back and doesn't seem to be as large and innovative.

Also, I just noticed that you can't put things back to the corpses anymore. If you strip them naked they are going to stay that way. Damn it.

Well, realistically you're not going to take the time to put the corpse's clothes back on..... right?

Most of the issues we're having now, i trust can be amended with mods. There's already a good number of them springing up.
The only thing that really bothers me is the constricting menu navigation mode.... definitely a by-product of console-isation. And the sore lack of tooltips.

Stop comparing it to Morrowind and just enjoy it for what it is. Besides, Cyrodil is an Imperial dominated province, what the hell kind of buildings did you expect to see? Morrowind was just more culturally diverse, that's the way they meant it to be. Don't dictate what should and shouldn't be, I'd say that's the job of the people that invented the Elder Scrolls universe.

As for the world feeling smaller, I disagree. The addition of horses and the ability to fast travel (don't tell me you haven't used it at least once, I know damn well you all have, even you people that dislike it) give the illusion of a smaller game world because it doesn't take as long to get places when you don't have to walk everywhere.

When expectations are unrealistically high nothing can be done to avoid a sense of disappointment, even if there really isn't much - or anything to be disappointed about.

And just as a general rule of thumb, new things very rarely seem as good as what came before it. It's part of getting older, have fun experiencing it with everything else in life and understanding why old people are always complaining about how things were better in their day.

As for me, I hated Morrowind (for various reasons I won't get into). Oblivion has corrected most of the things that made me hate Morrowind, and because of that I'm actually enjoying the game. I started playing 8 hours ago and didn't even realize I had been playing for 8 hours until I saw what time it is, at which point I exclaimed "Holy shit!".

I was playing the game on X-box last night, I cant say iv found anything wrong with the game, the game play is fast and entertaining, Character creation is really good for making very diverse avatars, the out fits look great, and theres alot of hidden little things in the game.

Currently im playing a custom classed Argonian who is a member of the mage and warrior Guilds, but currently i put those on hold, My current goal is to do all the Dark Brotherhood quests. Much like the theive's guild, the dark brotherhood have theyr own ...unique, method of recruiting, Currently im on my second job and having alot of fun.

My favourite option, is the fast travel, it means i can do all the quest's im currently on without getting side tracked, but when im in no particular rush its fun to simply travel by foot, stopping to squish the occasional wolf and generaly enjoy the scenery bumping into the occasional elven ruins or gobli cave.

I like how alot of the game is discovered by watching the NPC's strike up a conversation, its really entertaining listening to the conversations they have.

Stealing horses is also a fun hobby ^.^

Only a couple of wth moments, such as the game freezing and my character being put into a Y-x axis when first mounting a stolen horse, but other then in game glitch's the way how when your riding over the moutains, you hit an invisible barrier and the message "You can go no further" pops up, it feels kind of cheap, but, its better the just having an impassible moutain, i think.

Also, how fricken hard is it to murder people in this? There you are, setting fire to some begger when all of a sudden then rush off and grab a gaurd, worse still when they reach the gaurd, they dissapear, dissallowing any kind of retribution or satisfying killing blow.

I don't think a mod can fix the crappy, baron map that fell out of my box. I don't think a mod can fix cheapskate Take 2 and their damn paper sleeve!

And I don't think I want a mod until my 2nd time. I want a clean play through (and apparently there's actually not many quests, but about half, or more than half is made up of wandering and cleaning out dungeons, screwing my weak little theif over!) and during my 2nd time I'll be sure to add in whatever mods I see fit to enhance my gameplay.

Does anyone here use cheat mods? I for one have never, as I feel they just detract from actual gameplay if it's a one-hit-win game. Eh, to each 'is own.

Well, believe it or not, I haven't used it at all. Not even once. Because I figured that the world will feel smaller if you get to travel like that, and looks like I was right according to your description. If you guys want to feel a big world, I would suggest you guys not to use the map. If you follow the main quest, you should get a horse by now, and that should be more than enough to take you from A to B.

Try going into dungeons, or fighting in the arena. Won't be nearly as easy fight then.

My first character was an Argonian theif/marksman. I got quite tired of getting my ass raped by every melee monster/npc that backed me into a corner(which would happen very often). Put 15 hours into him, and decided to make an Orc battlemage type toon. 20 hours playing him, and I am enjoying him much much more.

I have to agree with some of you that Oblivion feels a hell of a lot smaller than Morrowind. I remember it taking forever to run from one place to another in Morrowind, so much in fact, I constantly used these one boots that completely blinded me but made me run 200% faster or something...lol was good times having to navigate solely by using the map.

The fast travel definitely cheapens the experience. On my first toon, I used fast travel all the time. Partly because it is pretty much impossible to be a thief and not use fast travel. It would be a huge timesink to have to run on horse to that one merchant that actually buys stolen goods everytime your inventory fills up(which happened very often for me). That is one of my complaints about the game, having only a few merchants that buy stolen goods, and making them only available if you are in the theif's guild. I mean really, how will merchants have any idea if goods are stolen or not?

Ah shit, I have to get to bed. 6am in the morning and no sleep because of Oblivion :D .

I agree, Oblivion is nothing like Morrowind... the lore is still there, but whereas Morrowind was the last province to enter the Empire, and Vvardenfell was dominated by the Tribunal, it FELT like that. Cyrodiil looks like the capital of the empire that it is.

Kind of. Imperial City is way too small. :(

Alright guys, this is totally crazy...

I was doing my main quest as usual. While on my way to find the city southeast to the imperial city, I saw a patroling guard gbeing attacked by an imp. I rushed over, get off the horse back, and tried to get rid of the monster for him.

Accidently, I didn't stop attacking after the monster was dead. The guard started screaming "I'm under attack! I'm under attack!" So he approached me and arrested my ass, because I didn't have enough gold to pay the fine.

I lost all my money, all my ingrdients, all my items and weapons and armor, and hell knows if my horse is still waiting at the same spot, and I didin't really remember where that was. All this, all this crap happened to me because I tried to help! There is no trial, I had no lawyers; they just threw me into this stinky dungeon and stripped away all my properties because I don't have a house yet to put everything I own! This was unfair!

So, with one lockpick at my disposal, I actually managed to open the door, and I ran out of my cell. A bunch of guards were soon after my ass, and my bounty just went up like crazy. I soon found a horse in a nerby stable, and, damn, I took it and run! A guard soon showed up with a horse, so after I was sure that he was the only guy lafter me, I got off the horse and started to fight. After 30 minutes of running around in circles while shooting fireballs, I finally killed him, and took all his armors and his sword. And his horse.

This is when things started to get really interesting:

I ran to the top of a hill and chased off a few bandits, and slept in a bedroll. When I woke up, a guy from the Dark Brotherhood showed up, and he offered me a mission to kill some old dude in a hotel as an initiation to the brotherhood. I did the mission, and killed two Imperial forestmen I ran into. The dude that gives me issions is a vampire, and even promised to turn me into one if I do my job well.

I'm now an assassin! They gave me this really cool looking light armor that fortifies my stealth and agility and everything related. Now the game feels like Thief.

Alright guys, this is totally crazy...

Whenever crazy shit like that happens to me, I just go back to a previous save, so I don't have to deal with some of the stupid game mechanics like that.

You also want to be careful around your horse when battling mobs that are attacking it. Hit your horse too many times and it comes starts attacking you. Forcing you to kill it and waste all of that money...YAY!

Somethings messed up that I don't understand:

Don't use the z key to move around anything that doesn't belong to you when an NPC can see you. Somehow the NPC's equate moving something to stealing it. Oh, and if you ever drop one of your stolen items on the floor, don't move it around, because they will see it as stealing.

Guards seem to hear and see every kind of lawbreaking action instantly, at least most of the time. I have no idea how this shit works, because 9/10 of the time when I try to kill somebody in their homes, a guard runs in and tries to arrest me. The times when the guard has not run into the house has been when I attack the person while they are sleeping, for some reason this does not trigger a guard reaction.

On the first oblivion gate I was fighting along with some of the guards. Half way into it, I look at my character profile and somehow my bounty is at 1000 gold. Whoops, must have killed a guard on accident while trying to kill the mobs...pretty retarded.

The lockpicking game is utterly frustrating. It seems I can get the first slot on the first time, but then the second, and third slots seem to be more difficult. I waste about 10-15 locks trying to get a normal difficulty lock open sometimes. The timing required for the slots to be opened seems to be a bit too picky in my opinion.

In the arena, what the hell is up with the all the combatants and their insane run speed. I mean who can possibly run backwards at 40mph? I think every one of them drink a speed potion before fighting, but still, they run insanely fast, even the ones with heavy amor.

Take conjuration and Mystisym as two of your main skills, this allows you to start off with Summon skeletal minion and lesser life detection, while in the dungeon, set it to sneak, activate life detection, this will allow you to see enemies through walls.

Once youv located your target switch to your summon skeletal minion spell and take a few shots at your target, when it begins to close in on you, summon the skeleton, itl instantly grab your targets attention allowing you to either take a few more shots, or draw a decent weapon to join in melee

Id explain how to get an invitation to the Dark brotherhood, but i cant seem to remember how to do spoiler tags.

March 26th, 2006, 08:25 PM
Well, from what I hear, everything is leveled to you. So, you're level 5, the best you could ever possibly find, is steel or silver stuff, and there's no where you can't go because all enemies in the world are the same level as you. You level up, and everyone has Daedric armor and is still the same level as you. There's no point to level up, no point to go exploring for better stuff, and certain people will always be stronger than you no matter what. Yep, you go to Oblivion and kill a bunch of Daedra, then go and pick up an apple to look at it and a guard comes and beats your ass. The whole thing's stupid and makes it pretty much just an action game.

Apparently. They're level scale is set so that whatever level you are, they're always ten levels higher, although they're always stuck with the same crappy items they start with, unlike everyone else apparently. This is opposed to most other NPCs were are set to your level exactly I think, or a level or two over or less, but they'll get daedric armor and such.

Yian

Well, it becomes an big inconvenience when you try to use a bow or cast magic onto someone, because there is no crosshair in 3rd person mode. Fighting with weapons and blocking actually become easier, though, because you get to see what it around you; the view angle is much wider.

I have been using 3rd person mode since the beginning of Morrowind, thus it was my natural default choice for Oblivion. Part of the fun of acquiring new armors is seeing yourself actually wearing them. :)

This leveling system is far more fair than Morrowind's was, in my opinion. You can't trainer-spam in this one so much as you could in Morrowind, you have to actually use the skills more to gain levels.

Ahriman
March 27th, 2006, 04:04 PM
I'm not talking about that, I'm talking about the level scaling.

Dark_Swordmaster
March 27th, 2006, 05:17 PM
Yes, Morrowind DID. The wild critters are leveled.

However, items aren't really leveled the same. You can have the highest items first off in Morrowind, whereas in Oblivion it keeps it nice and fair by scaling what equipment is available at what level.

But yes, Morrowind did indeed have a level list!

Ahriman
March 27th, 2006, 07:54 PM
Morrowind's level scaling was not spawning certain enemies until you were a certain level. That's only remotely done in Oblivion. The equipment scaling is idiotic. Might as well play Devil May Cry or something if they're gonna do that.

I'm running it on an Athlon 2500+ at 2.2ghz, 1 gig of pc3200 ram, and a 9800 Pro, and it works quite well for me. I have it at 1280x960, with bloom, max view distance, and all textures on medium. Darz
March 28th, 2006, 12:25 AM
I'm going to have to agree with Ahriman. The level scaling on mobs and loot is pretty lame, especially when you start getting to a higher level. There is no real sense of accomplishment when you are always fighting mobs that are the same general difficulty.

There are a lot of people who are interested in changing this aspect of the game to be more like morrowind. It would be very difficult to change the entire game, as mentioned here, futher down the thread...:http://www.elderscrolls.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=303053

There are a few people that are currently working on, and have made early plugins that fix a few of these things. . This one has done things to change the game so that the level of mobs is static.

Oblivion is a much more refined and overall better system than Morrowind. They fixed alot of Morrowind's problems in Oblivion.

Also on another note I heard a beggar say "I've heard the Neravarine has left Morrowind on another expedition." I cracked a smile at that, thought it was a cool little call back to your character in Morrowind.

I don't have the game yet (~40 hours left) but I've read up on the scaling system and it seems pretty ridiculous. It really breaks immersion. When you're Lord of Hell or whatever, the common bandit shouldn't give you any trouble. He should die when you lay a finger on him. There should be some sort of scaling, certain mobs only level up with you up to a certain point, while other mobs don't go under a certain level. With this scaling shit nothing is impossible.

Of course, I haven't played. So I could be totally off about how this works. I wish these selfish fuckers would seed more.

The X800 doesn't support the kind of HDR used in oblviion, you need an ATI X1K series or GeForce 6 or 7 series.

I'm pretty sure that's how it works. Right now I'm lvl 15 and I'm finding bandits along side the road that have glass warhammers and other rare items. The only benefit to scaling, that I can see, is that it gives the player a challenge every step of the way. Doesn't seem very realistic at all, and like you said, it does break the immersion.

I have been enjoying Oblivion after the years in Morrowind/Tribunal/Bloodmoon. I like the voice acting (ala Gothic) and the random conversations between npcs is superior to Gothic. I love the new visuals , although I can only use the bloom effect as I own a x850xt card. I have tweaked the ini to get none of that "growth" of the grass and stuff and streched my fov min to the max 3k so it is all a clear view. I own a 3.2 ee processor, 1 gig of 3200 mem and run the game @1280x960 with AA @2. The frame rate is low but no studdering and I love the view. I have all shadows cranked except the grass which is off and the self ones which I didn't care for.

This has made me cancel WoW for now. I won't be back for months...

Hi fucktwats, its been a while, just popped back in to say that Oblivion is pretty fucking cool shit and coming from me this is really something considering how I absolutely loathed Morrowind and anything associated with it. Oblivion is a nice time killer and the fact that everything is voice acted makes it all the more fun. Very nice game thus far, eventhough I would still venture to say, it is pretty run of the mill in terms of RPG elements. Almost everything has been done before by anyone but considering this is a full blown package it is fun.

On a side note, a couple of things that have annoyed me in game, If you kill a shop keeper, he is not carrying his inventory [eg what you can buy, let alone his gold] nor is any of it locatable in nearby locked box's.... rather annoying that

Also, has anyone managed to get a poisoned apple to work? It seems the NPC's just eat around them, even when theres nothing else to eat available.

What do you mean you destroyed everything you worked for? Are you talking about having to kill off all your "brothers" in the sanctuary. What's the point of starting over after that? After doing what you had to do to become a silencer, the storyline for the brotherhood gets quite a bit better, but the missions get more boring.

Oh, and the poisoned apples are very hard to use. On one of the brotherhood missions, the one in my spoiler, I had 5 apples laying about, took all the food away, waited for like 5 hours game time, and only one of them picked up an apple and started eating it. The results were pretty hilarious though, cause she was sitting down.

Good point. Next time I will tell them to walk around in their chameleon mode, see if they do any better then.

I just went into the TES construction set. It looks like Bethesda fucked up on the female assassin stats, because they do not have the box checked for level scaling. Which means she is always level 5 no matter what level the player is. I guess that explains why she sucks so much. The other two assassins are scaled so that they are 2 levels below the player.

Well, too bad then, because the gameplay is dumbed down drastically from Morrowind. Of course, I enjoy the game still, but it is still true that Morrowind offers a much more diverse and richer exprience. I guess Morrowind was simply too big for the avarage consumers. Sure, hardcore gamers like us can never be satisfied in terms of depth. In fact, more often than not I found that even Morrowind isn't deep enough. Many people must have thought so, as well, and they came out with huge amount of mods to make the game even deeper, such as banking system, more customized armors and weapons, more random NPCs, more houses to buy...

I just hope that someone can figure out a way to make the character wearing armor pieces, robe, and clothes all together. This is just freaking lame that we can only wear one thing at a time. Also, they need to split the armor into more pieces to allow more customizations on clothing, and they need to fix the problem that you can send everything flying if you bump into a table.

Go to your user folder (C:\Documents and Settings\YourName\) and then go to My Documents->My games->oblivion.

Open Oblivion.ini
----Following commands----
iPreloadSizeLimit [sets amount of ram to allow to be used at oblivions disposal] For me, I have a gig of ram, and its set to "1000000000" no quotes.

iThreads [amount of processor threads, 3 default] My value is 20 and im running a shitty celeron.

iOpenMPLevel [not sure, but it helps to increase it to 20 or so]

bUseHardDriveCache [sets cache to 0 for no, 1 for yes. Helps with game performance]

Maybe you should change your difficulty level, class, or starsign? One of my charachters is a level 1 and I can kill most people with my steel longsword in 1-6 hits.

I'm level 30 and I'm still facing higher level enemies, if slide it down I'll face enemies in my level easiest. Will it change anything? No, since they will still keep their Ebony and Deadric sets.

Edit; Thing is not entirely their level, is their equipment.

Yeah, this whole level scaling is totally bullshit. I'm not sure if anyone is able to fix it with a mod, because there is way too much things involved.

No Soul
April 5th, 2006, 08:00 PM
Tes Source has some good mods, a few supposedly fixed the whole leveling shit (seems harder and I've seen some creatures that I haven't seen before). There is also a combat mod that modifies the enemy's behavior in battle. Then theres others like: prices, carrying weight, maps, viewing distance, need sleep and food, and clean water mods.

I completely agree. 95% of the games that come out are no where as good as oblivion is. And it's not like it's a short game either.

I love this game. Well, I guess that it would be nice if Morrowind's gameplay was carried over completely plus all the great things we now have in Oblivion, but that's also like saying "it would be nice if we can have a game that's Doom 3 + Half-Life 2 + FarCry + FEAR. I think Oblivion is great for what it has to offer. If you are hardcore enough to consider something like Morrowind as "true" RPG exprience, then you should be hardcore enough to know how mods work and where to find them. If you don't then chances are that you will do fine with just the dumbed down gameplay. Sounds fair to me.

Can anyone help me?!

I have a Pentium IV 3.2 GHz with 1 GB of RAM (2 x 512MB 400DDR PC3200), with a 256 MB ATI-SAPPHIRE RADEON 9550SE DDR graphics card. Is this decent enough to play this game? I want the game to look as good as possible, but at the moment it is slowing up when I move outdoors, especially when other NPC's approoach to engage in combat (indoors is fine, though!).

Is my graphics card the main thing that is limiting me?

What are the best game settings for me to use?

Ok now I haven't gone through the whole thread since I don't have the game but does any one here get a lot of crashes while playing this game cos I hear that is a bitch of a problem for some people.

Darz
April 7th, 2006, 10:07 AM
For me, it crashes occassionally. Doesn't really piss me off too much because it usually happens as I am running along through the wilderness and it starts to load new environment, and then crashes. If you are a quicksave whore, it really isn't that much of a problem.

xenophage
April 7th, 2006, 10:11 AM
What kind of a setup do you have? And was this the problem with Morrowind too?

Darz
April 7th, 2006, 09:25 PM
Well, I think when Morrowind launched it was crashing for everyone. As they released patches, I think the crashing went away, at least that is what I remember.

The crashes for Oblivion really don't happen too often, so they are no big deal to me. The most annoying thing about this game has to be its inability to be minimized without fucking up.

This is what I'm running:

Windows XP Pro
AMD Athlon XP 2000+ 1.66Ghz
1 GB ram

Ok since I've never played any of the Elder Scroll series, I have 3 questions

1] Where could I read up on the basics? (and this is the stuff not mentioned in the dungeon tutorial)
2] How do you enable the world map in the game?
3] WIll I be able to play the game without using magic?

1. http://www.elderscrolls.com/home/home.htm
2. Look in the options and see what key opens up the journal, and press that, then switch to the map section by clicking it. Another possibility -> press f4
3. Aye, you can play your character however you want, be it with a tiny dagger or a bigass sword, you don't have to use magic if you don't want to.

I have a few questions:

What does the huge hour glass (sands of time) do? It is hidden in the basement of the imperial palace.

Where do I get my dragon armor after beating the main quest?

How do can i get to the 3rd floor of the imperial palace?

tisl

Set that quest as your active quest. Wait two in game weeks. When the time has passed you'll know because you'll get a popup and a map marker.

Don't know about the other questions.

This btw happened while I was resting in the Fighters Guild. SO my question is can you only level up when you sleep?

And secondly, I just helped the fuckers fight off the demonic invasion and closed the first gate, and some how I have a 1000 gold bounty on my head when I return to the Imperial City. What the fuck is that all about?

fAlphaAddInterior: from default to 0.7000

Well close to 17 hours in game, level 5, killed the arena grand champ, and overall very pleased with this RPG. It is nothing like Morrowind and that for me is an excellent achievement. I like the free form, go anywhere, fuck anyone gameplay and I can't be arsed to do main quests, I keep closing some Oblivion gates though and its rocking. Some quests are boring as fuck but most are in the ok and good department.

I will admit however, I haven't seen a quest that made me go holy shit thus far. I am collecting recommendations for the Mages Guild and plan on joining fighter's guild soon too. I was on my way from Skingrad to Anvil and came across an Oblivion gate, so need to close that shiz before I get a move on.

Overall, excellent game and now finally enjoying it after enchanting some shiz and kicking some ass.

When you see that icon with an arrow pointing upwards (near your health) that means you should rest so you can level up. Yeah, you can only level up when you sleep.

You probably accidentaly killed one of the guards inside the place. It's a pain in the ass to try and avoid the fuckers because they run around all over the place, and often RIGHT IN FRONT OF YOU when you're swinging. If you get into a fight with one of them just hold block, target them, and hit space. You'll still have a bounty for assault though.

WhoGivesARatsAss
April 10th, 2006, 02:51 AM
I usually let the fuckers kill off themselves and when they are all killed I just loot laters. That is one of the reasons why I am still a virgin in the bounty dept even after 17 hrs of play (zero bounty). And I only steal when they are asleep :D.

Talk to Alves Unemin in Leyawiin Mages Guild. Get him to talk about a daedric shrine. It is called Nocturnal and will appear on your map, north of the city on the eastern road. You must be level 10. Do the quest for Nocturnal and you'll get the Skeleton Key, an unbreakable lockpick that gives +40 to your security skill.

You click based on what you see their facial reaction will be it goes snarl, a bit peeved, apathetic, and smile. Then you select your choice based on the amount of rep it will garner and you also have to decide if you'll pick in relation of where the wheel will turn next and how that can affect the rep score as well.

I can't see any expression on the face of this fucking reptilian I'm supposed to persuade. If I even tough him, I get a bounty, whatever happened to using brute strength to bully fuckers. But seriously, how can I persuade him cos ta times I reach 41 or so, then I click on joke and he spits on my face
